Bomb Explosion Rocks Norwegian Gov’t Headquarters After Terrorist Charges Last Week

Explosion Hits Norway Government Headquarters Parliament Oslo

OSLO, Norway (AP) — A powerful bomb tore open several Oslo buildings, including the prime minister’s office, on Friday, killing at least one person, a Norwegian news agency said. Several people also were injured, as the blast shattered windows and coated the street with documents.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg is safe, government spokeswoman Camilla Ryste told The Associated Press. A senior adviser to the prime minister, Oivind Ostang, said Stoltenberg was working at home Friday and was not in the building.

Norwegian news agency NTB says police confirm the Oslo explosion was caused by a bomb. The country’s public broadcaster, NRK, said one person was confirmed killed.

“There has been one or several powerful explosions in the government district in Oslo,” Oslo police said in a brief statement.

“So far, police cannot say anything about the scope of the damage, aside from that there’s been one or several explosions.”

An Oslo police official, who would not give her name because she was not authorized to speak to the media, said “there are several people injured.”

She said the cause of the explosion was not clear. Asked whether police suspected a terror attack, she said: “It’s too early to speculate in that.”

ABC News cites government sources who say the explosion was the result of a car bomb.

NRK showed video of a blackened car lying on its side amid the debris.

Most of the windows in the 20-floor high-rise were blown out, and the bottom floor appeared to be gutted. Nearby offices were also heavily damaged and evacuated, including those housing some of Norway’s leading newspapers and news agency NTB.

Witness Ole Tommy Pedersen was standing at a bus stop about 100 meters (yards) from the high-rise at around 3:30 p.m. (1330 GMT) when the explosion occurred.

“I saw three or four injured people being carried out of the building a few minutes later,” Pedersen told AP.

An AP reporter who was in the NTB office said the building shook from the blast and all employees evacuated as the alarm went off. Down in the street, he saw one person with a bleeding leg being led away from the area.

The government building houses the offices of the prime minister and his administration. Several ministries are in surrounding buildings.

The blast comes as Norway grapples with a homegrown terror plot linked to al-Qaida. Two suspects are in jail awaiting charges.

Last week, a Norwegian prosecutor filed terror charges against an Iraqi-born cleric for threatening Norwegian politicians with death if he is deported from the Scandinavian country. The indictment centered on statements that Mullah Krekar – the founder of the Kurdish Islamist group Ansar al-Islam – made to various news media, including American network NBC.

Terrorism has also been a concern in neighboring Denmark since an uproar over cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad six years ago. Danish authorities say they have foiled several terror plots linked to the 2005 newspaper cartoons that triggered protests in Muslim countries. Last month, a Danish appeals court on Wednesday sentenced a Somali man to 10 years in prison for breaking into the home of the cartoonist.

UPDATE:

The AP now reports two deaths in the blast:

A powerful bomb tore into the heart of Norway on Friday, killing at least two people and injuring 15 as it ripped open buildings including the prime minister’s office. Is was the deadliest bombing ever in Oslo, normally associated with the Nobel Peace Prize that is awarded there.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg was working at home Friday and was unharmed, according to senior adviser Oivind Ostang.

[...]

Oslo police said the explosion was caused by “one or more” bombs, but declined to speculate on who was behind the attack. They later sealed off the nearby offices of broadcaster TV 2 after discovering a suspicious package.

UPDATE II:

The BBC is reporting (via Fox) that there may still be people trapped inside. Fox has the latest along with new video:

UPDATE III:

The BBC has the US’s response:

The US condemns the “despicable” blast that tore through government buildings in Oslo and says it is ready to provide assistance if requested.

“We condemn these despicable acts of violence,” State Department spokeswoman Heide Bronke Fulton tells AFP.

“Our hearts are with the victims and their families, and we have reached out to the Norwegian government to express our condolences.”

This is EXACTLY what Hermann Cain means when he says he would do extra scrutiny of any Muslim applying to work in the WHITE HOUSE. Aain, he is ahead of the curve. There are normal Muslims who follow the LAWS where they live and then there are the Muslims who follow Shariah Law ONLY and these are the ones bombing around the world. They are masters at lying ( Ft. HOOD) who they really owe their loyalties. So unfortunately common sense and self preservation dictates ANY Muslim now must go through extra security measures. Much of this chaos rest with the good MUSLIMS who are basically silent. That too is due to their religion. You can’t criticise another Muslim. Political Correctness won’t save your life. If you continue to “think” all peoples think alike than you are doomed. There is a calaphate against ALL non Muslims. Its time we who are not followers of Mohammad realize we are in the cross hairs and act reasonably.

This is what happens when a country puts their heads in the sand and pays no attention to the constant flow of muslims into their country. I suspect with Obama’s efforts to bring 10,000 more Somali’s into our country, explosions like what happened in Norway will happen here. Dum, dum, dummies in Washington will never wise up.

My bet is on black muslim terrorists. I was in Oslo last summer and it was hard to find a White person….muslims everywhere in their traditional muslim garb and burkas. I think the norwegians are getting nervous about this muslim invasion and this explosion is probably a reaction to stricter immigration laws against the invaders.

It is time to stop pretending that this is the “Religion Of Peace”. They are not. They are trying to drag the entire world kicking and screaming back into the 13th century. They must be stopped. With just a few exceptions, very small exceptions I might add, the majority of the world’s problems are caused by the Muslims. The rest of the world has learned to live in peace, with the help of the United States Of America acting as World Police.

Clearly, DonT Tread, you don’t know how terrorism works on a population. People can put up with death and destruction when they feel it is limited to “dangerous” areas, like a battlefield. But when it can strike anywher at home then not knowing where they are safe instills a great deal of fear that people cannot and will not tolerate. They either must surrender or fight. For you to say “Big deal” only shows that you aren’t taking seriously the threat.

Me saying “big deal” is me saying in the grand scheme of things this means very little. I know what terrorism is and getting in a row about small bombs when the world used to have MUCH bigger problems (WWI/II, Cold War, Korea, Vietnam, Kurdish massacres, Cambodian genocide, and on and on and on). The media today perpetuates this idea that danger is right around the corner and it certainly feels that way when you turn on the news. I’m more worried about Iran, N Korea imploding, Russia rearming and being very aggressive, REAL problems. The isolated bombs across the world are NOTHING compared to what we face in the future. Give me a break with this united muslim front to end all non-believers crap

@ Abbygirl, no, this isn’t funny. But isn’t as not funny as the Murrah building bombing that happened while I was in 5th grade. Luckily, my friends parents who worked in the building were saved by tardiness and a sudden need to use the restroom. Those two things save the fathers of two people that I knew personally throughout gradeschool. Neither is it as not funny as 9/11 in my sophmore year of high school. While I didn’t know anyone who was there personally, I did join the Marines a few years later and the thought of another terrorist act was not something I took lightly.

“A caliphate to rule the world? As long as they attempt this world transformation through legal, peaceful means, that is their right.”

Rose, until you have read even just one story on Islamic history you should not make such comments about Islam ruling the world via a caliphate. The spread of Islam would not be the vastness that it is today had it spread through legal and peaceful means. Muhammad and his followers offered two choices to those communities they encountered and ultimately conquered: either convert to their religion or die. Jews and Christians of larger communities were sometimes offered to, instead, pay a tax, but they lost their community all the same.

How is it that you afford the Arabs the right to follow their beliefs (as sick and twisted as these beliefs are) but, not any other civilization? For one second, step outside your “collective-community” box and consider the individual family. Does the individual family in the US have the right to live under his/her own belief system? Do I, I- have a right to choose to be a Christian rather than a Muslim? Does an atheist have the right not to believe in god?

      @Rose-

      And furthermore,
You said, “I reject this notion that one day they woke up and decided to attack america because we’re not muslim.”
They didn’t just wake up one day and decide to attack America and the West. The planning has been going on for a very long time.

You also said, “The recent uprisings on the part of “extremists’ are simply a respopnse to our unjust colonial and post colonial meddling and contolling of their peoplef…”
Which uprisings are you referring to? 9/11? 1993? Which colonial meddling and controlling are you referring? Our oil interests in the Middle East? Or is it our large presence in countries such as South Korea, Japan, Germany, and now the Middle East? What ever presence we have in these countries, the reasons we are there, NOW, do not fit any description of colonalization.
In many cases, our presence in these countries were not only warranted, but we were invited to be there.

    From USA Today:
“Although the source of the blast is unclear, Al-Jazeera TV notes that Norwegian prosecutors on Tuesday filed a terrorism charge against Mullah Krekar, founder of the Kurdish Islamist group Ansar al-Islam. Mullah Krekar is accused of threatening a former minister, Erna Solberg, with death, Al-Jazeera says.”

Nearly 100,000 muslims reside in Norway. You decide.

Show me the next European country that thinks it can domesticate Islam and I’ll ultimately show you a country that will experience what Norway just experienced, or worse.

It’s amazing how everything in life is based on actuarial studies – but when you throw people into the mix, suddenly some of these very same people that use these studies and never question the motives suddenly feel that the same rules can’t apply to a culture of people.

Fool me once, shame on you! Fool me twice. ….

I am strongly inclined to agree with you on that; yet we should wait until the final facts become clear as it could, just possibly be, a mechanical explosion of a heating unit or something like that.

Creepy eh? By way of deception?? lol Get it? They will deceive you?? With their Media?? Make sense? lol We wil blame in on someone else when in actuality it is us operating and deceiving?? lol

You’re probably right. Al Queida strikes again. Let’s take out Iran. I hear an Al Queida was spotted around the border on Iran and he had just met with Ammadinjad.

      @Snowleapard

It looks more like a natural gas explosion since you can’t see a blast crater in the square in any of the videos. But you see lots of glass.

I made mention of Massad as well earlier but strangely, my comment was reported and removed. I wonder why? Trust me, most the people enjoy the crimes that Mossad commits worldwide since they enjoy the same bloodlust that Mossad possesses. You can guess which god they worship!
