VACAVILLE, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California man who went outside to retrieve a newspaper from his driveway Sunday morning was injured when a device hidden inside the paper exploded, authorities said.
The blast at around 10:20 a.m. forced the evacuation of about 50 surrounding homes in Vacaville, which is located between San Francisco and Sacramento.
The man’s daughter-in-law, Sharon Sanchez, told KGO-TV that he had cooked breakfast and was waiting for family to arrive when he walked out to get the paper. It wasn’t clear if the man was the target of the device, or if the explosion was a result of a random attack, Vacaville city spokesman Mark Mazzaferro said.
The man, who authorities haven’t identified, was airlifted to the University of California, Davis Medical Center. The extent of his injuries was unknown.
A bomb squad from Travis Air Force Base and officials with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the California Highway Patrol helped search the area, but no other explosive devices were found, Mazzaferro said.
Residents from most of the evacuated homes were allowed to return late Sunday afternoon, he said.

Just as boxcutters are banned from airliners, CLEARLY newspapers pose a danger to the general public.

Posted on March 28, 2011 at 2:58amProbably the product of “EXPLOSIVE HEADLINES…!”
Seriously, it is highly unlikely it was a complete “random” attack. Bombers do their evil work for a reason; and it usually involves an individual, or individuals. If you look back at the Unabomber, he had specific targets. One of his targets was a colleague/acquaintance of mine (I hired his wife to work in my legislative office)! He did communications for a lumber industry group. In that capacity, he was mailed a “package”… because he wasn’t in the office on that day, his boss opened the package, and was tragically killed by the bomb! Thank God the Unabomber was caught!
—
In this case, we will likely discover that the victim was in fact the target… Now when roadside IED’s start exploding, we have an entirely different problem…! (Heaven help us all!)

Posted on March 28, 2011 at 12:53am@Showtime….Yes, good observation, he already had one newspaper on his coffee table. Why did the elderly gentleman venture out, again? Does he take two different Sunday papers?…or…
I wonder if he received a phone call…a message…that sent him scurrying out to pick up this “paper.“ And was this ”paper“ actually a ”drop-off”…and at the wrong house? This is so very sad. Our hearts go out to this gentleman; may he heal quickly and well.

Posted on March 28, 2011 at 12:02amThe odd part is that the man’s newspaper was on his coffee table. Bless his heart — he saved his family injury when they arrived. Posted on March 27, 2011 at 11:54pmThe first things that comes to mind is the bombing of that oil executive a while back and the arson targeting rich people homes.
However without more information it is improper to come to a conclusion of the motivation of the bombing. It could be random or with motive. It could be political, personal, or just a nut.

Posted on March 27, 2011 at 11:59pmGood mind, Psychic_Warrior!!!!!!
I forgot all about that bombing of the oil executive’s home – bc it has been dropped from getting any media attention – since it first happened.
That is definitely connected to the “suspicious” Oil Rig Explosion….

With the FBI in on the case, I can tell you they won’t share informaton until they make an arrest. I get FBI press releases from California and Atlanta and will watch for information about it.
