Extreme Home Downsizing: Avoid Building Codes and Loans

Try a Tiny Home ... or Five to Bypass Building Codes, Need for Loan

Derek Diedricksen, micro-builder. (Photo: Bruce Bettis)

Building codes for new home construction can be as thick as a dictionary. Getting a loan for a home is a painful experience.

Solution? Bypass both like Derek Diedricksen by going small. FairCompanies.com, a website community that provides access to tools about sustainable culture, calls Diedricksen a micro builder. Diedricksen calls himself “bizarre-chitect or lark-chitect.” FairCompanies reports:

“There’s almost this whole outlaw aspect of it. I’ve kind of been a little anti-authoritarian most of my life playing in punk bands and what-not and a lot of the housing codes and rules to me, while some of them make good sense, a lot of them are just ridiculous and very antiquated.”

Diedricksen boasts five micro-buildings on his property, to which many building codes don’t apply, that he constructed on a “micro-budget”:

His Gottagiddaway a.k.a. “$100 homeless hut” was built for about that (or perhaps as high as $110). His 32-square-foot micro-office [...] was built for $80 from barn sale/ barn demo materials.

His materials are salvaged from old buildings, lumber mills, recycyling and the dump. His windows are made from old office water coolers, soda bottles, pickle jars and even a washing machine window (a side from the same machine has become one if his drop-down tables).

One discarded cedar lounge chair inspired an entire cabin. The Hickshaw- a “rickshaw for hicks”- has the same dimensions as the chair (2 1/2 feet wide by 6 1/2 feet deep) and can be rolled by one person.

None of Diedricksen’s backyard creations are lived in full-time though he has camped in at least a few of them, uses them for a bit of shedworking for writing his blog and reserves the right to send unwanted guests in that direction.

Watch Diedricksen’s story:

Diedricksen said he grew up in a modest-sized home and hopes that his mini-homes will hope show people that extreme downsizing is doable:

“Why waste most of your life paying for a house you‘re never going to be in because you’re out working 80 hours a week to afford it, but you’re working so many extra hours for this huge house that you need to heat, you need to furnish, you need to maintain, you need to clean. The bigger the house, the more of your short and finite life you‘re using up to make those ends meet when you don’t really need a house like that.”

This 16-year-old did the same thing, building a small mobile home — no mortgage attached:

Diedricken not only builds small spaces for clients but he self-published a book Humble Homes, Simple Shacks, Cozy Cottages, Ramshackle Retreats, Funky Forts, which has sold 3,000 copies and is anticipating a second edition next year. He is apart of the Small Home Movement.

Try a Tiny Home ... or Five to Bypass Building Codes, Need for Loan

Derek Diedricksen's "weekender micro-cabin".

The Blaze reported on other cases of extremely small homestead, which as this 441-square-foot home, an even smaller one at 320-square-feet and the more extreme 72-square-foot apartment in New York.

You know, if living in a 1000 sqft house on its own lot isn’t a priority to you, and you spend most of your life not at home, I can see reasonable people going this route. Some people might rather go on expensive vacations instead.

You know for a single person this is a neat idea however… one needs to keep in mind safety issues when it comes to these types of homes. Live in tornado alley? Make sure you either you have an underground shelter or can get to a safe place before it hits. Snows hard in the winter? It may have to be slightly bigger to accommodate some kind of insulation. All the natural disasters/weather need to be taken into account should someone decide to go this route.

Or be great for retired, empty nesters to become “snow birds” where you move north in the summer, south in the winter and just rent a piece of land. My parents always wanted to get an expensive motor home and do just that. Now they’re too old.

Uh, no, I can’t. Hey people, I thought theBlaze readers were hip to the groove, this article and all the other “micro-size” home articles are about getting the US citizen prepared to accept SHANTY TOWNS and South American styled SLUMS here in the US. You know, those horrible places to which Sally Struthers always wants you to send money? You know, those FILTHY places where all these immigrants the US government is hauling into YOUR neighborhood in a misguided bid to make Social Security work? Social Security doesn’t have enough workers to pay for itself, solution? MORE WORKERS! You really think this ISN’T intentional that we just keep seeing one micro-sized home article after another? Although they do make the idea very attractive, by saying less money for utilities, and I am vaguely attracted to the idea, I think you’re right. My very first thought was agenda 21.

That said, I would love to simplify and down size, but I can do that without moving. I have a 1554 sq ft 3 bdrm, 2 bath house that’s jam packed. All I need to do is declutter and I’d feel like it was a mansion.

This is like the 5th article I’ve read about people in America living like they do in third world countries.
And all of the articles are positive could it be that media is preparing people for the inevitable THIRD WORLD AMERICA. When you redistrubute you don’t bring the lower income up you bring those above the lower down. If you look at our country and it’s slide that is pretty obvious. And if you look at the great society model Detroit you see America’s future if we continue with this whole redistribution.

Every town government in the North East of the USA would not allow this to be build. In New Jersey you cannot even erect a tool shed without the government’s permission. The only thing you can do in my town with your own property is paint it. The government has not yet decided to regulate how you paint your house though I could be mistaken.

In America, you do not really own your house, the government owns it. If you do not believe this, see what happens when you fail to pay your real estate taxes.

Can you picture a whole neighborhood of these contraptions? How about a field strewn with them that they decided to take over like tent cities do in California right now. A tent would give you more space and you can collapse it. Why not just everybody in the US go this way and we’ll really show the banks aye? You’ve got to be joking? I can understand downsizing and I don’t criticize anybody for wanting to do it, but with a real home and not some shack on wheels. If enough ppl do it, then you’ll find the government subsidizing this kind of living and viola you have shack cities everywhere. Don’t go there ppl, demand higher standards and get costs under control. Americans for the most part live well beyond their means. Roll this back a little bit and watch the prices of everything fall.

That small is good for a single person, a bit bigger for a couple, but if you have kids, you need a bit bigger. My parents’ house, that I lived in until I turned 20 and joined the Navy was only about 1,200 sq ft. they still live there. My bedroom was 9 x 10. I lived in a house that was 2100 sq ft, and just a lot to clean. I lived in a 3,000 sq foot with my in laws, and way too much to clean. Now I live in a 1554 sq ft and I could go smaller, but I’d have to have a yard sale.

you can’t call yourself a conservative & not support this..in fact its in the name, living conservatively..& being a good Christian coincides very well with using solar & using old building materails for new,it doesn’t mean your a hippie..hippies are rich kids who talk/complain and don’t do anything, green living is for intelligent ppl with common sense, who don’t want to pay double for their mortgage just for the interest payments,or feel like making the electric co. rich, when you could have solar panels do all the work, like the 16 yr old kid could do,or anyone w/mobile home, hook up solar panels & not have to plug in to anyone elses home…I tried to do this in heavily populated area of Long Beach,NY,.buy empty land only,& build small pre-fab homes,green,w/solar or self sustaining in some way…get away from gov’t regulation in zoning & off the power co.’s grid, besides all you can do w/a backyard..I believe in these projects, just a little bigger to support a couple more ppl,but just under the ludicrous zoning gov’t regulations..I don’t know how you can call yourself a Christian or conservative & not support this..

Absolutely correct. I am a single 36 year old who needs very little space to live. I am on the bus line and don’t have a car on the road. My costs are very minimal to survive. This actually enables me on being less dependent on factors that I have no power over. I was forced into this position as a result of my lifestyle at one point. What I thought was the worst thing in the world, turned out to be the best. I have litte stresses, I have learned how to generate capital through various means in my local community, and really only have to work one full week to pay all my bills. Then a little more to eat, but still. It is truley liberating and freeing to live this way. Of course, this is all dependent upon my health, but that is why I put my extra money away for that rainy day. I make sure I have enough to live 6 months with out having to generate money. Taking this step isn’t just that simple though, like I said, I was fortunate to be forced to have to adopt faith. I had nothing to lose and just trust that the spirit will provide. And it does. I never know exactly how or why, but it has for so long now, I very rarely find myself caring to ponder about it. Like the passage about the bird not worrying if there will be food tomorrow. I only have to show up for life and do the footwork, the rest just comes. The only time I have problems is if I watch to much TV or especially Hollywood movies. They bring back the old house with the white picked fence idea I dropped way back when

First off I’m getting really tired of people telling me what GOD wants, there is a book for that, it’s called a Bible, maybe you should try reading it. 2: I can’t afford enough property to put up enough solar panels to power my microwave. Three, I wanna live like Al Gore flying my jet all over the country while my three mansions burn enough electricity in a month to power a normal persons home for a year. But hey, I‘m sure it’s alright for other people.

I don‘t know if I agree that it’s a “good Christian” thing, (I’m so tired of stereotypes) but it does make a lot of sense in certain scenarios. Part of me wishes that I had done something like this as a bachelor, saved up a lot of money, and put that money toward the house I now live in as a family man. We’d hardly have a mortgage had I had the forethought to do something like this early on. Youth is wasted on the young.

I’d really like to caution people on putting ideas solidly in categories, though. While you could argue that Christianity encourages minimalist living, what this means largely depends on the situation God has put you in. It‘s a heart issue more than it’s about outward appearances. Be generous in whatever situation you’re in and make the most of what God has given you. I agree with dhb1ibo that reading the Bible is the best way to know what God wants you to do, rather than subscribing blindly to the latest fad because someone told you it’s the Christian thing to do. (”Oh, come on – if you don‘t do it you don’t have a heart!” I’m so tired of hearing this kind of generalization.) Conversely, this isn’t necessarily a “hippie” thing, either. It is what it is. It’s a way of living on the cheap, and it’s not for everyone. In short, my point is think for yourself and don’t just try to compartmentalize ideas just because other people do.

Exactly what I was thinking. If his goal is to never get married, then he’s good to go!

This may be our future if the economy doesn’t get better.

To each his own. A complete chain of title would do the same no matter how big the home. Remember, the home builder is not regulated, the COMMERCIAL contractor is. Take care.

Would you trust a licensed contractor who hires a bunch of cheap laborers more because he is licensed by the state?

Children called these “tree houses” or “forts.” We built them all the time AS CHILDREN out of junk left over at construction sites, from our parents basement, etc. The only difference is, CHILDREN build them IN TREES, not on the ground!

    And this is “news?”

    lol

My first thought upon reading this.

I built a lot of “homes” when I was in my young teens.

Then I moved up to roving dens of love; aka a van.

    HEY…

I piled up a bunch of crap in my back yard, too…
How come nobody does “news stories” on MY piles of junk?

    lol
