‘Extreme Radical Attack on Religion’: Rabbi Goes Head-to-Head With Author of San Fran Circumcision Ban

A proposed ban on circumcision in San Francisco is sparking a lot of debate across the country: Will it be intrusive government, or government simply protecting kids? On Friday, CNN decided to host such a debate between a rabbi and the man behind the ban. Needless to say, things got interesting. We’ll let Talking Points Memo introduce the video:
Things got personal Friday on CNN.
A leading opponent of circumcision and Rabbi Shmuley Boteach sounded off over the merits of a proposed ban on circumcision being considered in San Francisco.
Lloyd Schofield, director of the San Francisco office of the Male Genital Mutilation Bill organization, says his proposal is intended to “protect the rights of men to choose for themselves when they’re old enough if they want to become circumcised.”
“It’s a human right to have intact genitals, unless you choose otherwise,” he said.
“I always believed that San Francisco was a live and let live city, I now see that it has a curious attachment to the male foreskin,” Boteach hit back.
In the end, Boteach lets the audience know exactly what he thinks of the ban — it’s an “extreme, radical attack on religion.” TPM has highlights from the debate below. But be warned, there is some rather scientific talk that does get graphic:

Northern California, Southern California and Central California. Then SF and LA can do their crazy liberal things and the Central Valley can be Conservative and Libertarian.
California is a progressive state and it’s falling apart. This is what Democracy looks like. The majority rules. You see we can get anything on a ballot if enough people sign a petition. People are always bugging citizens to sign this and sign that and often time, the signers don’t even know what it about. The petition pushers just say sign it so people have the right to vote. I personally don’t sign any petition that I have nt researched. I wish more people thought things through. Maybe this state would not be so screwed up.

Cutting babies’ genitals (for whatever reason) is an equally extreme radical attack on THEIR freedom to choose their own religion as adults. If you say it’s trivial, it must be equally trivial NOT to do it. And abortion is a different issue. Do human rights END at birth? Health benefits? Nothing so urgent it has to be done at birth – most of the world’s men enjoy all their genitals and excellent health with it. Cleaner? Cleaner than the men of Scandinavia or Japan? I thought conservatives favoured individual rigths, but apparently not when it comes to undisturbed enjoyment of one’s own genitalia – if one is male.

I know that athiest are self centered and believe the world is just about them but to attack people over their religion the way you have been means you may have a social problem that only a medical proffesional can help.
Athiest believe in “self” but when they can’t win an arguement because they have no foundation they escalate their attacks all the way to courts. Every time the athiest brings up a charge it’s about “what they want” Understand who you are and your self centered ways. You only bring hate and missery into your life by the course you set.

Really? Aren’t they trying to let individuals make a choice? People are still allowed to choose for themselves at age 18. Why should parents get to make cosmetically altering decisions for their babies? Should I be allowed to tattoo my baby if my religion dictates that I must?

Nick, do they extend the same right to choose to on keep living to those same babies in the womb? That would be the logical extension of your argument. But, you and they don’t. It’s fine to mutilate the ENTIRE body and suck it out in hose when the parent chooses, but don’t you dare touch those foreskins! How terrible that would be!

#2 Its not always religion, its usually done for health reasons too.
#3 The parent IS making a personal choice due to the fact that they are responsible for the child until 18yrs of age.
#4 I can’t ever remember hearing any complaints from anyone after procedure… And if you don’t like it… have it “cosmeticly” re attached.
Its NOT a required procedure at birth… If you don’t want it for your child, DON”T DO IT!
If your child is born cleft or or with some other repairable problem, I guess we just take that decision from the parent and wait until the child reaches 18 to see if they want to under go the surgery…

Report Post »In my opinion, this is no different than tattooing. If it is for religious reasons, the parents should be jailed for making that decision. Besides, wouldn’t it mean more to god if people made the decision themselves, rather than had it made for them.
