F-16 Runs Off Runway in Wisconsin

An F-16 with the Alabama Air National Guard crashed off runway during the Experimental Aircraft Association’s AirVenture Convention in Oshkosh, WI, Thursday morning.

Officials estimate the F-16 was traveling about 70 m.p.h. when it hit the grass at the end of the runway going nose down sending grass and dirt flying everywhere.

Fox WITI reports that the pilot of the F-16 is with the Alabama Air National Guard according to the guard’s spokesperson. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution and has since been released.

An official with the EAA says it could have been a mechanical malfunction or pilot error. He also says no EAA visitors were ever in any danger.

The Air Force is investigating the incident. No damage estimate was available.

Thank good ness the pilot was not hurt and able to get out ok. Looked like a minor crash (for an F16) and nobody else was hurt. These fellas do a great job in defending this country and deserve our respect and thanks, not ridicule and mockery. God bless our soldiers, sailors, airmen, guardsmen, and marines for fighting terrorists worldwide and letting us sleep safer tonight, while they do not.

“Those pilots are the best of the best.”

Umm. They are pilots. For the most part they are low time, but since he/she is guard, they’ve a bit more time. As to expertise, well that remains to be seen. Pilots of any sort screw up all the time. Yes, this silliness about military being the “best of the best” is drilled into them. It’s very hard on them when their own do screw up, because I suspect over half of their population actually believes they are the best.

Lest you think I’m picking on military types, the same arrogance pervades some of the airline tribes as well. It’s been many years, but there is/was a sign over the entrance to the sim bays at Delta that says something to the effect, “Through these doors pass the best pilots in the world”. Well, what can you say? Again, a significant number actually believe it.

No way to tell, at this point, whether the pilot was at fault at all. That determination will come later. Understand that if it is found that it was pilot error vs. mechanical failure, a defense of “I’m the best of the best”, will not get him/her off the hook. That determination will be based on the pilots individual actions, rather than a flawed public perception.

It’s a cute phrase though, in a John Wayne sort of way. ;-)

I used to go to the Air Show at El Toro Marine Base in CA every year since 1992.I witnessed 2 terrible accidents throughout the years. The vintage F-86 crash and the F-18 crash. Terrible and sad days as both pilots died (Blue Angels had a crash here in 1988 in another F-18; The pilot survived). I love air shows and still make it down to the Miramar show every year I can (Clinton shut down El Toro Air Base).

Felix…. Your an idiot……… I’m an aircraft mechanic, and it seems to me the thrust-reverser didn’t deploy. Whether the pilot forgot to, or couldn’t deploy, is another question, to be determined later. Such a thing is like forgetting to put the landing gear down, it’s such an ingrained and natural part of flying, that I doubt it was the cause…..but it does happen occasionally. FAR more likely… and common, is that the pre-flight crew left the safety pin in the thrust reverser, and the pilot failed to notice it on his pre-flight check, or didn’t complete the pre-flight checklist at all…. IF there was pilot error, I‘m sure THAT’s where it occurred………….

      haha! You guys are funny!

JUNKMAN’s response reminded me of one F-16 incident at an air show where the pilot forgot to to adjust his altitude in the pre-flight check. He had just come from an air show by the coast in VA and was now in Idaho… so when he did a maneuver where he comes close to the ground (“Split S” maneuver), he was about a thousand feet off. He was lucky and able to eject a split second before impact, and survived.

Junkman not sure what kind of aircraft mechanic you are but you’re obviously not an F-16 mechanic. F-16‘s don’t have thrust reversers. Check your facts before you start calling people idiots.

I, too was in the USAF and I know that the F-16 had a p[roblem with stray voltages in it’s fly-by-wire systems, maybe that was part of the problem. But most likely, the pilot was at fault. Pilots are great at what they do but have egos the size of whales. As a crew chief, if you had a pilot that was a pain in the rear, just find an “excuse” to red X the plane, and he/she ain‘t goin’ no were. One the ground, the crew chief rules!!! You will SOON get the respect of the pilot…..if he/she wants to fly ;)

As a retired pilot I’m still offended that the first thought after an accident is: “the pilot is Guilty, grounded, put on probation until proven absolutely beyond doubt it was mechanical failure,” then the pilot still has to take a check ride to make sure he doesn’t have a “mechanical failure” again before he is back on flight status.

That’s true Jmmarino, but I don’t think the FJ-1 was scooting along as hot as the F-16 when it hit the soft stuff. Plus the F-16 has a lot more over the nose gear than the FJ-1.. At least this time the FJ-1 pilot did put the gear down. A few years ago (I think it was the same FJ-1), the pilot forgot to put the gear down and made a perfect droptank landing…. That left a mark..
