CHARDON, Ohio (The Blaze/AP) – The death toll rose to three Tuesday in the shooting rampage in an Ohio high school cafeteria as schoolmates and townspeople grappled with the tragedy and wondered what could have set the teenage gunman off.
The teenager under arrest in Monday’s attack, T.J. Lane, faced an afternoon hearing in juvenile court.
Shaken residents offered condolences and prayers to the families of those killed and wounded at 1,100-student Chardon High School in suburban Cleveland. All three of the dead were students, as are the two people wounded.
A Cleveland hospital said Demetrius Hewlin, who had been in critical condition, died Tuesday morning. The news came shortly after Police Chief Tim McKenna said 17-year-old Russell King Jr. had died.
Another student, Daniel Parmertor, died hours after the shooting, which sent students screaming through the halls and led teachers to lock down their classrooms as they had practiced doing so many times during drills.
Both King and Parmertor were students at the Auburn Career Center, a vocational school, and were waiting in the Chardon High cafeteria for a bus for their daily 15-minute ride when they were shot.
The police chief would shed no light on a motive.
“I feel sorry not only for that family but all the families that are affected by this,” McKenna said. Characterizing himself as a “hometown boy,” he added: “Chardon will take care of Chardon.”
A student who saw the attack up close said it appeared that the gunman targeted a group of students — one who may have been dating Lane’s ex-girlfriend — sitting together and that the one who was killed was gunned down while trying to duck under the cafeteria table.
Lane’s family is mourning “this terrible loss for their community,” attorney Robert Farnacci said in a statement.
An education official said the suspected shooter is a Lake Academy student, not a student at Chardon High. Brian Bontempo declined to answer any questions about the student. Bontempo is the superintendent of the Lake County Educational Service Center, which operates the academy.
The alternative school in Willoughby serves 7th through 12th grades. Students may have been referred to the school because of academic or behavioral problems.
The FBI said the suspect was arrested near his car a half-mile from Chardon. He was not immediately charged.
Lane, however, did show some warning signs before the shooting. Besides tweeting an apparent threat, he also posted a message on Facebook:
In a time long since, a time of repent, The Renaissance. In a quaint lonely town, sits a man with a frown. No job. No family. No crown. His luck had run out. Lost and alone.
The streets were his home. His thoughts would solely consist of “why do we exist?” His only company to confide in was the vermin in the street. He longed for only one thing, the world to bow at his feet.
They too should feel his secret fear. The dismal drear. His pain had made him sincere.
He was better than the rest, all those ones he detests, within their castles, so vain. Selfish and conceited.
They couldn’t care less about the peasents they mistreated. They were in their own world, it was a joyous one too. That castle, she stood just to do all she could to keep the peasents at bay, not the enemy away.
They had no enemies in their filthy orgy. And in her, the castles every story, was just another chamber of Lucifer’s Laboratory. The world is a sandbox for all the wretched sinners.
They simply create what they want and make themselves the winners. But the true winner, he has nothing at all. Enduring the pain of waiting for that castle to fall. Through his good deeds, the rats and the fleas.
He will have for what he pleads, through the eradication of disease. So, to the castle he proceeds, like an ominous breeze through the trees. “Stay back!” The Guards screamed as they were thrown to their knees. “Oh God, have mercy, please!”
The castle, she gasped and then so imprisoned her breath, to the shallow confines of her fragile chest. I‘m on the lamb but I ain’t no sheep. I am Death. And you have always been the sod. So repulsive and so odd.
You never even deserved the presence of God, and yet, I am here. Around your cradle I plod. Came on foot, without shod. How improper, how rude. However, they shall not mind the mud on my feet if there is blood on your sheet.
Now! Feel death, not just mocking you. Not just stalking you but inside of you. Wriggle and writhe. Feel smaller beneath my might. Seizure in the Pestilence that is my scythe. Die, all of you.
Video taken in the area apparently shows Lane being apprehended:
Teachers locked down their classrooms as they had been trained to do during drills, and students took cover as they waited for the all-clear in this town of 5,100 people, 30 miles from Cleveland. One teacher was said to have dragged a wounded student into his classroom to protect him. Another chased the gunman out of the building, police said.
Fifteen-year-old Danny Komertz, who witnessed the shooting, said Lane was known as an outcast who had apparently been bullied. But others disputed that.
“Even though he was quiet, he still had friends,” said Tyler Lillash, 16. “He was not bullied.”
Farinacci, representing Lane and his family, told WKYC-TV that Lane “pretty much sticks to himself but does have some friends and has never been in trouble over anything that we know about.”
Long before official word came of the attack, parents learned of the bloodshed from students via text message and cellphone and thronged the streets around the school, anxiously awaiting word on their children.
Two of the wounded were listed in critical condition, and another was in serious condition.
“I looked up and this kid was pointing a gun about 10 feet away from me to a group of four kids sitting at a table,” Komertz said. He said the gunman fired two shots quickly, and students scrambled for safety. One of them was “trying to get underneath the table, trying to hide, protecting his face.”
Slain student Daniel Parmertor was an aspiring computer repairman who was waiting in the cafeteria for the bus for his daily 15-minute ride to a vocational school. His teacher at the Auburn Career School had no idea why Parmertor, “a very good young man, very quiet,” had been targeted, said Auburn superintendent Maggie Lynch.
Officers investigating the shooting blocked off a road in a heavily wooded area several miles from the school. Federal agents patrolled the muddy driveway leading to several spacious homes and ponds, while other officers walked a snowy hillside. A police dog was brought in. It wasn’t clear what they were looking for.
Teacher Joe Ricci had just begun class when he heard shots and slammed the door to his classroom, yelling, “Lockdown!” to students, according to Karli Sensibello, a student whose sister was in Ricci’s classroom.
A few minutes later, Ricci heard a student moaning outside, opened the door and pulled in student Nick Walczak who had been shot several times, Sensibello said in an email. Ricci comforted Walczak and let him use his cellphone to call his girlfriend and parents, Sensibello said. She said her sister was too upset to talk.
Heather Ziska, 17, said she was in the cafeteria when she saw a boy she recognized as a fellow student come into the cafeteria and start shooting. She said she and several others immediately ran outside, while other friends ran into a middle school and others locked themselves in a teachers’ lounge.
“Everybody just started running,” said 17-year-old Megan Hennessy, who was in class when she heard loud noises. “Everyone was running and screaming down the hallway.”
Farinacci said Lane’s family was “devastated” by the shootings and that they offered “their most heartfelt and sincere condolences” to Parmertor’s family and the families of the wounded students.
“This is something that could never have been predicted,” Farinacci told WKYC-TV.
Rebecca Moser, 17, had just settled into her chemistry class when the school went into lockdown. The class of about 25 students ducked behind the lab tables at the back of the classroom, uncertain whether it was a drill.
Text messages started flying inside and outside the school, spreading information about what was happening and what friends and family were hearing outside the building.
“We all have cellphones, so people were constantly giving people updates – about what was going on, who the victims were, how they were doing,” Moser said.
The school had no metal detectors, but current and past students said it had frequent security drills in case of a shooting.
Anxious parents of high school students were told to go to an elementary school to pick up their children.
Joe Bergant, Chardon school superintendent, said school was canceled Tuesday and grief counselors would be available to students and families.
“If you haven’t hugged or kissed your kid in the last couple of days, take that time,” he said.

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 10:28amIt is too easy to blame video games. I am in my late 20s play video games and watch movies that would be deemed violent. However, there is a disconnect between fantasy and reality. Playing those games and watching those movies doesn’t make me any more desensitized to violence or make me want to commit any violent acts. When something is real you view it completely different. My parents were involved and monitored what I played/watched when I was younger, so that would differ me from others, but you can’t just blame violent games and movies. If it was only down to those then every young kid would be jumping out of a window thinking they can fly because they saw it in some movie.

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 10:39amI will also pray everyday for the safety of my son and others children as well when they set off for school each day. My neice was a witness to one of the attacks at schools this year, the one where the mentally ill girl was released from the mental hospital and stabbed the 2 girls. I am heart sick for all involved in this current story. This child, the shooter, was doomed to failure like so many other young ones who’s parents and community fail them, fail to recognize the hurt. This boys father and mother are to blame, yes he should never in a million years hurt anyone but child abuse has proven to stunt the development of the brain from the year the abuse begins. It should make us all wonder what a kind word can do to help someone in need, this is what I try to pass on to my child, kindness and love. Prayers for the kids who were shot, their families etc. Kids in these broken homes with derelict parents need societies help, even with it the damage done by the parents may be too great.

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 12:14pmAgreed with many posters here.. Video Games are not the problem, and violent movies are not the problem. Kids who lack their parents supervision are the problem. I am 29 years old, and have played video games since the Caleco Colorvision came out (pretty much the same time as Atari I believe) and I find it to be a pleasant way to pass the free time.
Are video games violent, Yes! Are they full of “Mature Content”, Yes! But you know, that is what makes them fun. At no point in my life have I EVER mixed the “fun” of video games with the “horror” that is reality when you apply video game logic to the real world. Anyone who blames video games or television for their children growing up to become monsters, needs to take a good long look in the mirror, and realize the the person staring back at them IS the problem.
If you don’t like your children playing violent video games (because you have allowed your children to become little impressionable robots, due to YOUR lack of parenting skills) then MAYBE you should consider spending some good quality time with your children in order to help ensure that their “world” is one based in reality.
But remember, no matter what you do, or how you raise your children, sometimes good people just go nuts…
———
That aside, I feel horrible that these kids have died due to the mental instability of one psychotic little punk. May they find their eternal rest, and may the punk find his eternal torment…

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 1:52pm@rick 43 – The average game player is 37 years old and has been playing games for 12 years. The average age of the most frequent game purchaser is 41 years old – You should google it, this was done by polls by the entertainment software association.
It sounds like your not a gamer, so you judge those that are as childish, your actually in the minority.
I‘m in my 40’s, and have been gaming since the days of Pong. I love violent games but I’m not a violent person. I have never been arrested, have a great career, have done very well relationship wise, and well adjusted. Just because a kid plays a video games does not mean they will grow up to be a mass murder, but you have stepped on toes when your are observant enough to notice that many of these school shootings come from kids that have emerced themselves in violent video games, violent rap music, violent movies, and have little to no supervision at home.

It is tough to be a lib when stuff like this happens. You Pelosi, Boxer, Fenistein, Hillary and crowd so much want to make it look like it is the kids from NRA members that are out doing these types of shootings, but it never is. Check those crime stats, The cities with the toughest gun control have the worst gun violence. check what happened in Australias biggest cities when they complety outlawed handguns. gun violence trippled overnight.
Majority of shootings done by teens in this country are commited by minority kids in large cities. Check the FBI crime stats, and see how many young black males are murdered each year by other young black males. But we know that it is not your goal to prevent such violence, or you would be looking to limit welfare, rap music, and other contributing factors.
You fear the Bible reading gun owning, constitution believing American. You can not own him. The differnece between a serf and a citizen is the ownership of a rifle.
when we do see white kids commit these crimes, it is not the country kid that goes to church and shoots competitively in the 4H club. It is always that kid that lives in the home with no discipline, a home with out a father, or a real weak one. A kid that is neck deep in MTV, violent video games, weird fantasy games, and generally a kid that did not learn proper gun safety from his father or grandfather.
Keep trying and you might get someone to buy the crap your are selling, or just run

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 4:22pmfor those that think violent video games, rap music, violent movies…. do not impact a teen or child, and can influence to act out.
How much money do TV stations charge a company to air a 60 second commercial during the super bowl? If you said millions, you are correct. Why does a company willingly pay that much money for just 60 seconds of air time? It is because it helps sell their product.
If we kind of brake it down barney style, in just 60 seconds of the right phrases, the right jingle, the right slogan, a company can influence viewers to spend their hard earned money on a product. People are that easy to influence.
Now, if we can influence people to spend money in just 60 seconds, how much influence can be passed on by literally hours and hours playing the same game, listening to the same rap music, watching the same violent video?
What is the goal of those that create the games (other than make money) who is behind the games? who is behind MTV? Other kids channels? The rap music producers? Who makes up most of Hollywood?
SO when folks tell me that video games and movies and music do not influence, I ask them to explain the advertising industry to me.

It’s one of the things I have done for fun since I first learned how to program my TSR-80 when I was a kid. Video games and the Internet keep me in touch with my family members through out the world, and allows us to “hang” together even when we are apart. Now, a person has to do more than just one or two things to remain balanced, I don’t blame the choices a person makes on video games, or even parents. Each person is responsible for their own actions, unless they a missing a few marbles.

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 9:48amHe was crazy pure and simple. Some people are. Parents just don’t see it until it is too late because they love their kid. That is their failure. I am sure they tried. He was in a special school, what else could they do? Sometimes it doesn’t matter, even if you make a kid pay for his actions, if the chemical makeup it bad, it is just bad.

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 9:55amIt didn’t sound to me as if Lane had any family..he felt alone and rejected…So much of this has happened..because we have allowed bible teachings and prayer to be taken out of school..In turn..the love and acceptance left. In the garden..Adam and Eve were made in God’s image..Satan fooled them in telling them that if they would eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil..that they would be like YHWH..they already had the blessing..but lost it because they believed a lie..

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 10:53amAshes: Seriously you attribute this to lack of religion in school? What kind of crack do you smoke? This kid has deep emotional problems and I doubt that any god or religion could have helped him. Judging from his poem, I would say he may have turned to God or some other divine form, but it was not enough to ease his anguish. There is good and bad in everyone regardless of their religion. Sometimes the bad can manifest into something like this shooting. I learned a long time ago never to pick on the “spooky” kid or the “quiet ones”, as they appear to be the types involved in school violence like this. Stereotype? Maybe, but still something to think about.

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 12:21pm“A student who saw the attack up close said it appeared that the gunman targeted a group of students — one who may have been dating Lane’s ex-girlfriend.”
The Bible warns daughters not to awaken their love too soon. Do you know why, Hrothgar? The Bible is a relevant set of books from God Who has infiinite wisdom. They are not simply stories and history. Our country has deprived our kids for 50 years now of learning God’s Word. We will continue seeing kids with serious emotional problems because they have no peers who can tell them of God’s love.

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 9:34amThe first word we hear of the shooter is from a “family lawyer.” Obviously, this kid was a troublemaker for sometime. And stop with the bullying garbage. The psycho didn’t even go to that school. Yet another instance were our society focuses on the misfit exception instead of the mainstream.

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 9:32amHere we go again, The schools must do a better job! He was bullied! Society did not see the warning signs! The real answer is in the family. We cannot have a good society if we do not have the foundation built on rock. America is paying for the breakdown of the family. We don’t need Church, we don’t need traditional families, we don’t need Christian morals; so we replace them with drugs, violence, work place killings, sex, school killings, occupy (for free stuff) protests. Who took a stand and said no! This is a forty plus year old problem coming to a head. It used to be unacceptable to be divorced, having children out of wedlock, drug addicted (alcohol included). Today they all must be understood and accepted as if their shortcomings were not of their own doing. Bad stuff happens to everyone. It’s how you deal with it that matters. Today thats an excuse to engage in one devient behavior or another. I know, I got close to the edge but decided to pull back and be a responsible human being. I did not find the strength through a bottle, needle, violence, or sex, but from the Bible and my responibility to my family.

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 10:09amMy oldest was bullied, 37 stitches to his face. We carried a bag of meds for anxiety, ulcers, nausea, spastic colon and depression. He is now off all meds, in college with straight A’s. The school and I went round and round, they did nothing, I filed charges. He wasn‘t the only one and it’s not always other kids bullying. We had staff that was just as guilty. My heart breaks for this child and his family.

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 9:24amThis kid is profoundly disturbed. Why would a person shoot someone simply because they don’t like them? It must be something in the culture.
This is yet again a product of the socialist agenda otherwise known as the Civil Rights Act. It apparently is doing exactly what was intended.

Posted on February 28, 2012 at 9:43amDisturbed or not, the young man has free will and could have chosen NOT to do this. I am tired of having those who commit horrible crimes made out as victims. There are plenty of people who have mental problems and bad backgrounds who use self-control. Perhaps if we stopped excusing and being sympathetic to criminals like this we wouldn’t have as many of them. Too many people give them what they want – notoriety, sympathy, excuses while they give themselves the revenge they seek.

I think CBS did a better job of capturing where the young man was. In the Blaze picture he is contemptuous of people. In the CBs picture he looks alone, lost.
With two pictures instead of one you can get a range of where he was at.
