Facebook Invite Mistake: 1,600 People Crash German Girl’s 16th Birthday Party

Facebook Invite Mistake: 1,600 People Crash German Girls 16th Birthday Party

Deutsche Welle:

Around 1600 people were cleared from the streets of a quiet Hamburg neighborhood on Friday, June 3, after police had cordoned off a house where a 16-year-old German girl had wanted to celebrate her birthday with family and friends.

The revelers outside – carrying posters saying “We love Thessa” – were celebrating the birthday, too, though they hadn’t been invited – at least not intentionally.

Facebook Invite Mistake: 1,600 People Crash German Girls 16th Birthday Party

The 16-year-old had posted an invitation to the party on the social networking site, Facebook, and accidentally listed the party as a public event.

After over 15,000 people responded confirming that they would attend the party, the 16-year-old attempted to correct the mistake by cancelling the party over the site. The cancellation was to no avail, however, and by early evening hundreds of young Germans from Hamburg and across Germany had already begun arriving.

“It was a great party atmosphere,” said one visitor, Angelika. “It’s almost like a festival here.”

TheLocal:

Police broke up the party at 1:55 am on Saturday morning. More than 100 officers were at the scene. Six revelers were arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery and property damage, but they have since been released.

Thessa opted to celebrate her birthday elsewhere.

Police said some people were injured after they stepped on pieces of broken glass. “Multiple units” were stationed outside the family’s house, a spokesman said, and several streets were closed off. The family also hired a private security company.

As the evening wore on, there were isolated incidents of bottles and firecrackers being thrown toward the police.

“There were stones, bottles and fireworks flying, and party guests took apart (people’s) front gardens,” Streiber said. “Fences were trampled.”

Being that I have many relatives in Germany, I swear I saw some 2nd cousins in that crowd. Sad about the destruction which was bound to happen with so many people. However, Thessa will have a great memory of her 16th birthday.

This is what happens when people forget they are using public social networking tools and behave as if they’re having a personal conversation with someone on the phone.

If you’re putting something online via facebook/twitter/etc then it’s public information. It doesn’t matter if you intend it to be or not.

My parents let me have a backyard keg party on my 18th birthday. (That’s when 18 was the legal drinking age. I paid for the keg the day before when I was 17 and didn’t get carded.) People were showing up that I had no ideal who they were, cars were parked up and down the street, music was blasting, people were dancing and I’m sure we were too loud.

      It was awesome!

Facebook is such a complete waiste of time. I found myself on the site more than I should plus the fact that getting anyone to have an intellegent conversation was next to impossible. Everyone seems way to involved in their little worlds. The only conversations you can get out of people was how much they drank last night or what party they were at etc, etc. What a bunch of dumba$$es! They can have it! Plus 75% of them were liberal pukes especially the ones in California!

My mother once said in the pub (many, many years ago) there’s a party at (her son) Chris *********’s place! She liked his friends and they liked her. Unfortunately my brother, who was not there, had no idea about the public invite. The family remonstrated with my mother after ringing mutual friends to try and kill the party. Fortunately, we were mostly successful. My brother arrived and my mother innocently inquired why he had arrived home so early.

“Well, I heard I was having a party, so I thought I had better show up.”

Thessa is by no means the first to have this problem and will certainly not be the last. One of life’s little learning moments.

Honest mistake but it does give me the giggles…… I can hear the desperate, last-minute phone call to the caterers.

Whats not funny is the behaviour of the “guests”. Trampling gardens, breaking things, throwing beer bottles etc etc. Perhaps thats why you were not truly invited in the first place?? And did you have the good manners to bring a birthday card or a gift? Based on your rude behaviour, I’m guessing you did not.

Liberal mentality … it’s all about them, forget respect for other people’s rights. Too bad this didn’t happen in Texas, where property owners have the right to defend their property after dark.

100 Officers were on the scene? Are you kidding me?

Lastly, I’m very keen on observation. The first time I noticed it was when I was stationed in germany back in the 1980′s and lived in germany for two years. All the masculine men in germany are gone. My theory is that all the masculine men were killed in WWII…only the weak feimine males that weren’t part of the Aryan breeding stock survived the war because they were too much pooosey to be sent into combat….so when the war was over…all that was left were the wimpy girly men.
