Fact Check: Beck Explores Reality Behind Mass Bird & Fish Deaths

What’s causing the deaths of millions of birds and fish around the world?
It turns out, perhaps nothing. Digging down to the bare facts, it looks like recent wildlife deaths are not that out of the ordinary. As Glenn explained during his Fox News broadcast Thursday evening, it’s not even that hard to verify the facts:
The AP also notes that while various blog and media sites connected the dots in the latest “aflockalypse” — from sinister government plots to biblical prophesies — biologists say these mass die-offs happen all the time:
Federal records show they happen on average every other day somewhere in North America. Usually, we don‘t notice them and don’t try to link them to each other.
“They generally fly under the radar,” said ornithologist John Wiens, chief scientist at the California research institution PRBO Conservation Science.
Since the 1970s, the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center in Wisconsin has tracked mass deaths among birds, fish and other critters, said wildlife disease specialist LeAnn White. At times the sky and the streams just turn deadly. Sometimes it’s disease, sometimes pollution. Other times it’s just a mystery.
In the past eight months, the USGS has logged 95 mass wildlife die-offs in North America and that’s probably a dramatic undercount, White said. The list includes 900 some turkey vultures that seemed to drown and starve in the Florida Keys, 4,300 ducks killed by parasites in Minnesota, 1,500 salamanders done in by a virus in Idaho, 2,000 bats that died of rabies in Texas, and the still mysterious death of 2,750 sea birds in California.
On average, 163 such events are reported to the federal government each year, according to USGS records. And there have been much larger die-offs than the 3,000 blackbirds in Arkansas. Twice in the summer of 1996, more than 100,000 ducks died of botulism in Canada.
“Depending on the species, these things don’t even get reported,” White said.
Weather — cold and wet weather like in Arkansas New Year’s Eve when the birds fell out of the sky — is often associated with mass bird deaths, ornithologists say. Pollution, parasites and disease also cause mass deaths. Some are even blaming fireworks for the blackbird deaths.
So what’s happening this time?
Blame technology, says famed Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson. With the Internet, cell phones and worldwide communications, people are noticing events, connecting the dots more.
“This instant and global communication, it’s just a human instinct to read mystery and portents of dangers and wondrous things in events that are unusual,” Wilson told The Associated Press on Thursday. “Not to worry, these are not portents that the world is about to come to an end.”
Wilson and the others say instant communications — especially when people can whip out smart phones to take pictures of critter carcasses and then post them on the Internet — is giving a skewed view of what is happening in the environment.
The irony is that mass die-offs — usually of animals with large populations — are getting the attention while a larger but slower mass extinction of thousands of species because of human activity is ignored, Wilson said.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 8:58pmWhile the Goreites are already blaming AGW, the best explanation I have found is recent changes in the Earth’s magnetic field. With the magnetic pole defecting to Russia, Tampa airport has had to recalibrate markings on it’s landing strips. Though it could be Muslim terrorists (or dancing Israelis), I think it is a case of confusion on the part of animals trying to migrate by following their built in compass. Can you imagine someone with GPS in their car trying to go home if it gave wrong readings? Most would follow it, even if that meant driving into a bay!

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 8:47pmITS CALLED EXPOSURE. Things die if they get too cold. Have you seen a bird frozen to a tree. Have you seen starlings freeze to death. Think of a jet at altitude, it really gets cold. YES, it is common sense. Think of an artic frigid air mass, suddenly its forced from high up to lower altitude, anything caught freezes to death suddenly. The birds wings ice probably like a jet. No lift then you fall, death from sudden impact.
Report Post »Al Gator
Posted on January 6, 2011 at 8:57pmYou probably have it nailed. Icing is a REALLY BAD thing when you are trying to maintain lift.
A little fog, a little drizzle, wet wings, then suddenly: Blammo, icy cold blast.
Even birds can’t fly with ice on their wings.
OBAMA_BINPHARTEEN is right. There is something about falling from altitude. It usually isn’t the fall that gets you, it that sudden stop that’s a mofo.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 9:00pmI have to agree with you, Myresponse. Glenn has some good ideas and philosophies, but lately he’s beginning to lose me. I think you hit the nail on the head; his ego is creeping up a bit too much. Take the ear implant story from Wilmington for example. It‘s great that he was in a position to help that family and I’m very happy that little boy got such an indescribable gift, but how many times is Glenn going to tell that story? Charity is not supposed to be flaunted. Doing so nets you a reward on earth (fame or adoration), and there’ll be none from God.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 8:24pmUnfortunately, what is not addressed in this article, is whether or not previous mass animal deaths have occurred in a similar fashion – birds falling from the sky seemingly in mid-flight. THAT is the part that seems the most unusual and it doesn’t seem that the article is comparing apples to apples here.
Report Post »I understand that die-offs occur frequently – disease, poisoning, viruses, parasites, etc. But these causes are more likely to result in slower deaths – more chronic type conditions that result in an eventual death of the animal or even an entire population of animals. These things do not usually cause an acute episode of something to result in the death of thousands of animals in the exact same MOMENT.
It is implied in this article that thousands of birds falling dead from the sky at once is not unusual – I would have liked to have seen some examples of similar situations because it’s the way they died that seems so unusual, not the simple fact that there was a mass death.
Al Gator
Posted on January 6, 2011 at 8:37pmThe initial findings were that the birds suffered physical trauma of some type before they hit the ground. The fireworks theory is good, since this happened around new years celebrations. But the wide area suggests that they may have run into an upper level hail storm or some other weather related anomaly that caused physical damage that killed them in the sky.
Birds flying at high altitude do run into bad things. A severe cold front for instance.
I know very, very little about meteorology, but I have seen critters get into horrible situations because the sky just opened up on them.
My opinion, this is something that does happen. It doesn’t happen often. But when it does, it sure the heck is spooky.
Report Post »Milkmom
Posted on January 6, 2011 at 8:49pmThat would make sense, Al Gator, but why wouldn’t the article cite those types of examples rather than the parasite/virus examples?
Report Post »Sure – initial findings are that there was trauma, presumably from something they encountered mid-flight. But do birds often accidentally fly into thunderstorms and fall to their deaths? I’m asking out of genuine curiosity – they very well may, but the fact that not one similar example was cited makes me think that it is in fact very unusual.
maybe GB elaborated more in the video – I only read the article – didn’t watch yet.
Al Gator
Posted on January 6, 2011 at 9:11pmThe virus-military industrial complex experiment theory is good grist for the LSM mill and makes the statists day. Sorry, that bird just don’t fly.
On second thought, see the post from Cincinnatus Dogood. When I think it through, this makes more sense than anything.
Icing brings down everything. Birds with wet wings included. Ice on wings equals really bad lift. Funny thing about the physics of flight: no lift, no altitude. Game over, crash and burn.
Hitting the ground from altitude really does cause catastrophic physical trauma that usually ends with the life form assuming ambient temperature.
No conspiracy here, but nature in motion. Some times, even though its harsh, it is indeed awe inspiring.
Report Post »Milkmom
Posted on January 6, 2011 at 9:14pmAfter a little more research, it does seem that, although unusual, animals have fallen from the sky in large numbers. Haven’t fact-checked these things, but the list includes live alligators, snakes, snails. Even glowing jelly globs and (weird) blood. Relly weird. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/433325/mysterious_rains_the_strange_things.html?cat=34
Another scenario that I just read about that seems to make more sense to me is that the birds were startled from their roost (it was unusual for them to be flying so late at night) and flew into a random cloud of methane gas, which they are very sensitive to (there were actually no thunderstorms in the area at the time – hours earlier, yes…). The trauma, which was on the breast of all the birds, imo could have been caused by the fall? Do they fall head/breast first?
Report Post »Probably not exactly what happened, but it explains things for me a bit more than the article did!

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 8:23pmI don’t buy it. The internet has been around for quite some time and it’s only now that people are connecting dots? I admit I’m no expert on this kind of thing, but I am curious how many of these unreported incidents happened in mid air and/or killed thousands seemingly simultaneously. Disease, cold, poisoning, etc don’t kill like clockwork. Two of the same animal exposed to the same toxin/infection/whatever will likely die at two different times.
I could be wrong, but that doesn’t sound too normal to me.

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 2:28pmThe truth is that the only change that has happened in our atmosphere is from people cutting down on carbon dioxide through mandated carbon sequestration by industry and other laws and efforts to eliminate carbon dioxide emission.
It’s the lack of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that is causing the die-offs around the world. The plant life, plankton and such in the ocean depend on Co2 to survive. Fish depend on the plant food and the sea mammals depend on the fish, and up the food chain it goes.
The change in the composition of the air in our atmosphere with less Co2 effects the breathing of all who breath the air to survive. Less Co2 and more oxygen in the air causes respiratory problems in the birds especially with heavy excurtion like when birds are migrating during the change of seasons. As opposed to nesting times of the year. Thus you get the internal injuries and bleeding the necropsy results showed in the birds. The birds are the first to exhibit the ill effects in the air much like the birds miners used to use in the mines to detect minute amounts of poison gas in the air. If Co2 sequestration continues, we will be next! Starting with our children and the weakest among us first!!!
Al Gore and all the other evironmental idiots and politicians are killing us and the planet with their lies about “man caused global warming”. THEY ARE KILLING US ALL!!!!
Now if I could just get a bigger platform to sell this crap, make a scary video and get a few unscrupulous scientists on line, I could get rich. Just like Gore and all the others!!…….he he he!
