FACT CHECK: New Romney Ad Claims Obama Has Waged a ‘War on Religion’ — Is this Accurate? (Poll)

Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign has a new ad out targeting President Obama and his handling of matters of faith and religion. The 30-second spot, called “Be Not Afraid,” begins with a question, “Who shares your values?” Then, it goes on to say that “Obama used his health care plan to declare war on religion.”

“The Romney commercial includes some of the candidate’s recent speech in Warsaw, reflecting on Pope John Paul II’s words — ‘be not afraid’ — during a 1979 trip to Poland that helped lead to the end of communist rule,” the USA Today explains.

Mitt Romney Releases Ad Claiming Obama Launched War on Religion

In addition to sharing images of Polish politician and human rights activist Lech Walesa and Pope John Paul II, the ad also declares that the regulations put in place by the president have forced “religious institutions to go against their faith.” Naturally, it frames Romney as standing against these restrictive policies.

“When religious freedom is threatened, who do you want to stand with?,” the ad concludes.

Watch it, below:

Considering the other advertisements that have created debate in the 2012 election cycle (Obama’s “Romney killed my wife” ad drama and the anti-Rep. Allen West spot featuring him beating women are just two examples), it’s important to explore the merits of the new ad.

The spot, which was sponsored jointly by the Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee, sticks to a very basic script in making its assertion: That President Obama has forced faith groups into a corner on the issue of contraception.

Interestingly, the ad never mentions birth control — the very issue that is at the center of Catholic and other faith groups‘ opposition to the administration’s policies. Instead, it focuses upon religious liberty, an issue that conservatives tried to drive home during the initial debate about the issue earlier this year.

Mitt Romney Releases Ad Claiming Obama Launched War on Religion

AP

In terms of its truthfulness, the ad seems to be on par, focusing upon the notion that institutions (not churches, seeing as houses of worship are exempt), were forced “go against their faith.” Taking into account the Catholic Church’s opposition to birth control, mandating that organizations associated with the religious system provide contraception would, indeed, make this a reality.

Critics, though, could argue that the proposed regulation — which is still under consideration for church institutions — hasn’t actually caused religious organizations to violate conscience. After all, it hasn’t gone into effect yet. On these grounds, the ad does seem to lead people to believe that violations have already taken place.

What do you think about the ad? Is it accurate? Take the poll, below:

Of course Obammy has attacked religion – since the remark he made in a plea against those of us who “cling to their guns and Bibles”!

But he wasn’t alone. Along with the help from radical church groups and leaders, he’s had a lot of help from a relatively silent Vatican. In the kind of war we’re in today, silence can be of great aid to our domestic enemies.

FEAR THEM NOT, BUT CHALLENGE THEM, ESPECIALLY THEIR LEADERS!!!! They CAN NOT STAND TO TRUTH!

Yes, Obama is not a Christian. Then again, many self-proclaimed Christians are nothing more than wolves in sheeps clothing. A Christian follows the doctrines of Christ’s Gospel. Otherwise, event Lucifer would qualify as a Christian.

The only reason he attended a questionable church was to give the appearance that he was Christian in the 2008 election. Had he been seen as an Atheist or Muslim, he never would have been elected. Now, people don’t seem to care.

Since his election, his policies and support have attacked Christianity on all fronts. He is a form of anti-Christ.

With his new legislation (supported by the Supreme Court), he can force religions into acting against their own doctrines. Such an act is satanic at least and treasonous at best.

Will all of you stating and stating again “Only Congress has the right to declare War” give me a break?

The US Congress has not “declared War” since World War II. But we have obviously gone to war several times since then, and are still at war now. I think that point has been proven moot, wouldn’t you agree? Congress has not followed the Constitution since “who knows when”!

Clearly, Hussein is not waging war against Islam. They are exempted from Obamacare. It is Christians who are being persecuted by this admin, e.g., in partnership with public school districts, Planned Parenthood has already set up School-Based Health Clinics (SBHC) in CA, so girls can get birth control/an abortion and/or be screened for STDs behind parents‘ back and on taxpayers’ dime. http://www.lifenews.com/2012/06/05/planned-parenthood-runs-public-school-based-clinic-in-los-angeles/

The fact that Obamacare conveniently goes into full swing post-election is merely political timing. It is already LAW and the mandate has been declared constitutional, so nobody is misleading anyone. The Commie House is just biding its time.

      FYI,
There is a covert “abortion premium” in Obamacare:

=> “…the ACA [Affordable Care Act] includes two “secrecy clauses” in the provision. First, insurance plans that include abortion coverage may only disclose the coverage in the plan’s summary of benefits and coverage, at the time of enrollment. Second, neither Exchanges nor insurance plans may disclose the separate, monthly cost of the ‘abortion premium’ that exclusively pays for abortions.”

This is it, folks.

Angelina Spencer, the executive director of the Association of Club Executives, which serves as a trade association for strip clubs, said an informal survey of convention business in New York and Denver had determined that Republicans dropped more money at clubs, by far.

“Hands down, it was Republicans,” she said. “The average was $150 for Republicans and $50 for Democrats.”

As further evidence of the clubs’ nonpartisan appeal, Don Kleinhans, the owner of the 2001 Odyssey, said when the Promise Keepers, a male evangelical group, came to town years ago, business was rollicking.

Can we assume adultery so ordinary among pub politicians nothing needs to be said? Sen Ensign’s resignation after aduterous affair last year would seem to suggest adultery rife in the GOP. There are legitimate wars on religious freedom (like in China, or Egypt, or East Timor) around the world. Not for a second do I think someone from those countries would look at the US and say “Yeah, you guys are totally having religious war right now too!”

No, I think Obama is not at war with religion. I think he’s a terrible POTUS who has significantly slowed the economy and ignored the Constitution, a man who has polarized the country and stalled our recovery. Yet not once has my right to private worship or my personal beliefs been infringed. Nor have the rights of anyone I know. Nor the rights of any religious place of worship.

Sadly, you are mistaken. There has been a war on religion for quite some time. Only now, as the Progressives see the finish line (and if they win the race we’re finished as a free nation), they have stepped up the pressure. Each tiny attack on religious expression takes them one step closer because we’re too well-mannered to fight back. All religious expression is protected by the first amendment, whether conducted in public or in private, on public or private land. A religious person or group has exactly the same access and right to public space as does an atheistic person or group. Equal protection under the law, guaranteed by the Constitution. The moment we accept the argument that religious expression in public must be curtailed because someone objects to the content, we’ve started down the slippery slope to tyranny. PC is BS. If, for instance, a religious group wants a cruciform flowerbed in a public park, maintained at their expense, they may have it, and if the atheists object, they have an equal right NOT to put in a flowerbed. Same holds true for prayer in public. Should one not agree with the material being presented, one is free to ignore it with no penalty incurred (in this life, anyway) and think about sex or whatever else makes them happy. Good manners dictate that they not make a fuss about it. Has anyone else noticed that manners have gone out the window with morals over the past couple of decades?

“Please post the similar views Obama has to Paul. Back your statement up.”

I think Model’s point was that taking on Ron Paul would likely make quite a very libertarians who would vote for a third party (or grudgingly for Romney) change to the Democratic side.

No he is ignorant to Ron Paul’s policies. He lets Bill Oreilly do his thinking for him. So what you are saying you think Model is for is libertarians will go vote Democrat?

I dont think Libertarians want a candidate who:

      Starts wars without a declaration.
      Supports the Patriot Act.
      Supports the NDAA.
      Supports bloated overspending.
Doesnt want to phase out and end the FED.
Wants government controlling the health care system.
      Wants amnesty.
      Supports gun control.
Doesnt want to end the TSA.

Problem for us is Romney and Obama both want those things.

I don’t think their is a war on religion waged specifically by the president maybe by other areas of goverment. My neighbors have not had to change anything about their religious routine but i did hear in Arizona about folks getting arrested for religious worship in their home.

“i did hear in Arizona about folks getting arrested for religious worship in their home.”

Actually, they built a structurally unsound church on their land while lying about it. Kinda hard to lie when you specifically paint the word “church” on the sign outside. They had several -years- from the county to appeal the ruling, or, y’know, check the regulations, but they didn’t.

Individualism, that is 100% false. No one was arrested for worshiping in their home. The man in question built a church on his property, hosting dozens of people a week, that was not up to code. He was arrested because, despite the city trying to work with him on the matter (this played out over several years), he refused to bring the building up the code.

The First Amendment states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof….
What part of “free exercise” do you and the city not understand?
At what point does a man’s Bible study group become a church? Who’s qualified to make that decision? Is there a legal definition of church?

      @Democrats

“At what point does a man’s Bible study group become a church?”

Putting a sign up that calls their building a church is probably a good point to start saying, “Hey, maybe they lied about this being a church…”

“Who’s qualified to make that decision?”

The government, or more accurately, their officials. They make the laws, after all.

“Is there a legal definition of church?”

      Of course.
“To define churches and other religious entities, some of the IRS guidelines consider whether or not an institution has:
a distinct legal existence and religious history,
a recognized creed and form of worship,
      established places of worship
a regular congregation and regular religious services, and
      an organization of ordained ministers.”

They need to zoned properly, however. Converting your house into a church (without filing as a church, without adhering to zoning laws, without regard to your neighbors’ property rights, without adhering to building codes) is pretty dumb. Especially when you are warned several times about the proper procedure, over the course of several years, and still ignore it.

Dictators like Obama have always attempted to manipulate and or cut the feet out from under religion, it’s no secret state progressivism want to control/replace the church.
State run religion is what they want, so they can preach there creed and control the masses.

As a result today you’ve become a twisted, bitter lefty troll with a penchant for creating mulitple screennames on blog boards. Is this the behaviour of a “functioning brain” to you sport? Really?

AVENGECAKE . . . Yes, like you I feel your energy waning, your desperation increasing, your British aplomb, a myth to begin with, leaving you naked before the world, like Randy Travis at a north Texas convenience store. Yes, of course my story was imaginary. You can’t abide the idea of someone having an interesting life. What would you tell yourself about your own vapid existence, full as it is with trips to the pawn shop to search out bargain VHS tapes. Dare to dream, oh vengeful baker. One day you too might have an actual experience that enlightens you beyond the scrotum squeezing confines of your digital day. But you must have courage, little one. Perhaps start easy, something with purpose where you aren’t expected to actually interact on a personal level. I suggest a visit to the dentist.
