Fail: Reporter Laments Lack of Meteors Despite One Streaking Behind Him

Right place, right time, but looking the wrong way.
It must not have been Mark Thompson’s night. The BBC reporter got stuck reporting on meteor shower during a cloudy night for the show “Stargazing Live.” Naturally, he couldn’t seem to find any meteors. In fact, he even started complaining to studio hosts that there’s “not much to be seen at the moment.” There’s just one problem: seconds before uttering those words, a bright meteor can be seen streaking across his right shoulder (about six seconds into the video below):
The Daily Mail says the hosts eventually informed Thompson of what happened:
Host duo Dara O’Briain and Brian Cox revisited the gaffe later on in the show when viewers had emailed and tweeted in to tell show producers what they had missed.
O’Briain confirmed the shooting star was in fact a meteor from the Quadrantid meteor shower.
He then crossed back over to an embarrassed Mr Thompson, who admitted his blunder.
He said: ‘I must admit I was oblivious to it, I think I‘m probably the only person in the entire country who didn’t see it.’

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 6:02pm“Fail”… yet another example of using a verb as a noun. Nice journalistic chops… this didn’t warrant the “epic” tag? Writing like a frat boy blogging his opinion of the latest comic book movie isn’t exactly the best way to build credibility. The word is “failure”… hell, I’d accept “failing”. Using a verb as a noun is what allows jerks to call people “retards.”

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 3:18pmThe funny thing about this?
This is what State-Run media gets you. Not just inept losers in front of the camera, but boring crap like “Star Gazing Live” TV shows.
That‘s not to say that stargazing isn’t fun, (I own a Celestron NexStar 8 SE, which is a nice telescope for the price), it’s just not worth live TV time when all you have to do is walk outside and see exactly the same thing. lol

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 3:35pmHey! I have a C8 myself, no “go to” computer on it, but auto slew/tracking.
Same thing every night? You’ve seen the entire Messier catalog then and the NGC objects? If so, nicely done sir, I salute you.
You may well live in a much nicer place than me though, in Ohio during autumn/winter/most of spring it’s cloudy almost 24/7. Takes a long time to get to all of the interesting little blurs here. :)

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 3:36pmWhat would have been real exciting is him stating about there being no shooting stars; and then one tiny one lands nearby, not enough to hurt anyone, just make a little ‘boom’ sound and show him jumping out of his britches.

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 2:10pmWHY does he have a telescope to look for meteors?
The media is so fake… it’s all about staging. If you want to see meteors, the last thing you do is zoom in on 0.1% of the sky.
There is no true media anymore. It’s all fakery.

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 3:21pmThe reason for the telescope would be to look at the Orion Nebula, he said it looks absolutely stunning through a telescope.
Report Post »N37BU6
Posted on January 7, 2011 at 5:22pmNot in those seeing conditions, it doesn’t… it takes long exposures to get any detail in the best of conditions, especially with such a small aperture scope. He doesn’t even have a CCD or color filters attached either, so it looks like a grey smudge at best.
In this particular situation, it’s nothing but a prop for the camera.

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 5:46pmHe was probably too busy looking at clouds through the scope to see anything.
But in his defense, meteors would show up a lot easier on that night cam (if it actually is a legit low light cam, which it looks to be) than with the naked eye.
I took some wide angle footage of the perseids a few months ago, and saw stuff on playback that I didn’t notice at the time. Probably about 50% more. And that wasn’t even a low light cam.

News caster: “This just released from the DC Press Secretary…a massive meteorite has been moved away from the projected impact sight of AZ or Texas by the valient efforts of our military…”
“And in a totally unrelated matter, a massive meteorite has just impacted on top of DC; they say the town survived as due to the pile of garbage making up the town, the meteor bounced back up into the depths of space…”
