‘Failed’: Olbermann Levels Blistering ‘Special Comment’ Attack on Ted Koppel

In his self-righteous “special comment,” MSNBC‘s Keith Olbermann responded to Ted Koppel’s Sunday Washington Post op-ed “Olbermann, O’Reilly and the Death of Real News.” In Koppel’s op-ed, he charged that polarizing figures like Olbermann and O’Reilly detract from the journalism profession, a category in which Olbermann somehow sees himself planted. Unlike O’Reilly, Olbermann blindly delivers his unabated opinion each night, convinced that his terse tone magically transforms it into “news.”

So how does Olbermann respond? By attacking Koppel and his so-called false promise of “objectivity.” In essence, Olbermann once admired Koppel… that is, until Koppel started to disagree with him.

Fashioning himself as a modern-day Edward R. Murrow, Olbermann openly explains to Koppel (and the other 4 or 5 people who might have caught his primetime rant) that Koppel doesn’t understand the complexities of “modern news” and that “truth” is superior to “fact,“ with ”truth” of course being determined by… MSNBC.

Uh, okay.

Let’s be honest, both of these guys are “opinion” guys, not hard journalists. Way too many people fail to make the distinction between the two. The issue is not Keith Overbite, the issue is so-called neutral anchor types with clear liberal bias. Look no further than MSNBC’s election coverage.

Why give this give this guy a platform to spout this nonsense. Kopple was great and I have always respected him and the stories he presented. I believe it was nightline he hosted, I watched it for years until he left. To bad that we don’t have anyone like him now giving the news like he did. I miss him because he was respectable.

I thought the people on this site who wrote the articles were real journalist but I guess I misunderstood what Beck said he wanted this site to be. Because saying that O‘Reilly doesn’t voice his unabated opinion is certainly not unbiased reporting nor good journalism. http://maboulette.wordpress.com

The difference is, after his “talkng Points” memo, you’ll notice (or perhaps ignore as a rank partisan) that O‘reilly’s most common question to the guest he has invited is, “OK – so where am I going wrong?” The guest, who actually OPPOSES O‘reilly’s viewpoint then goes on to REBUT the talking points, and an argument ensues. Overblownman NEVER has guests that disagree with him. I know – I watched his show for over a year, so don’t try to deny it. O’reilly – interesting arguments – Overbllownman – boring, self-serving tripe that always goes unopposed. It simply makes for BAD TV…

I am glad you still slither hee from time to time. I always get a good laugh from your posts. Since you seem to have missed it I’ll take a minute to point it out to you: There is more than one level to Bill’s show. The news and the facts are one part. Talking Points is opinion. Two different animals. You should try to be as objective as you want us to believe you are. You live in a glass house and throw stones. Your point of view is completely one sided with very little aforethought. I don’t completely agree with Beck, O’reilly or any of them. One of your shortcomings is that you have your mind made up before you ever hear what they have to say. A closed mind is an empty mind and from what you have posted here you have plenty of room above your shoulders.

Beck can‘t and wouldn’t want to control the comments we post here. Try looking at the news stories more closely and understand the posts are just users personal opinions and not always a reflection on Glenn Beck

I think the people here who attempt to “flame” you are silly. There is no sport in that because you make it too easy to do so. You seem to consider yourself a journalist…. Try acting like one.

Your quote is incomplete and out of context. The entire sentence read, “Unlike O’Reilly, Olbermann blindly delivers his unabated opinion each night, convinced that his terse tone magically transforms it into “news.” What’s key is the part you (I’m sure mistakenly) left out, the last phrase. Of course O’Reilly gives this opinion, just as Olbermann does but O‘Reilly isn’t convinced that his opinion is equatable with news, while Olbermann clearly is.

@82DAIRBORNE – are you talking to me? Why are you so disrepectful to me? Because I have different opinions than you? Is that it? Look, what I believe has evolved over a long, long time as I am old enough to be one of your grandparents. But just because my views are on the left is no reason for you to disrespect me or treat me as less than a human being. That happens a lot on this website which is one reason I don’t “slither” over as much as I use too. I am assuming you used the word slither to refer to me as a snake – very nice –thanks so much. As for the lesson on O’Reilly because I have been watching him for years but I appreciate the primer. I am not a journalist and have never advertised myself as such – unlike Glenn who said that he hired “journalists” for this site. By the way, I under that the posts are just personal opinion – such as you – but I was referring to the actually article that was written – see I can read.

I am so glad that I offer you some laughs – and gees – go head and “flame” me – I don’t mind getting my feelings hurt once a day – it makes me stronger in my beliefs. You seem to have missed the fact that I do have a deeper more sensitivity side but I really do try to hide it. So have a great evening and thanks for the comments – and once again I go away thinking the no one in the Tea Party was raised with any respect for others but only bitterness and hatred. http://maboulette.wordpress.com

You got “hate” from my last post????????? Very strong word. Also false. I have hated very few times in my life and you are not now or nor have you ever been a target of hate from me.

I would like to know how/why you presume to read my mind? Yes I liken you to a snake. that much is true. I don’t want to flame you. I made fun of people who do. Maybe you should re-read.

I simply posted what I think. Period – no hate there intended or otherwise. You expect hate and ill feelings here so that’s what you take from here. If my last, very tame post, hurt your feelings I don’t know what to say. I feel sad for you. Like a lot of liberals, not all, honest debate is not as important to you as your “feelings.” I don’t care about your feelings. I don’t care about my “feelings.” I care about the direction of our great nation and my grandchildren’s future.

O‘Reilly doesn’t brand his show as journalism. Bill brands his show as an OPINION show. However you obviously have overlooked the details in the story which were pointing out that unlike Bill, slobbermutt claims that he is delivering the news which implies that he believes that he is a journalist…
“Unlike O’Reilly, Olbermann blindly delivers his unabated opinion each night, convinced that his terse tone magically transforms it into “news.” ”

Perhaps a reading comprehension class would help you out. I suggest that you try reading a simple, easy to read, 6th grade level book like “Animal Farm” and if perhaps you can understand that, you might get a clue as to what the grown ups are talking about. I know that you ******** are remedial at best but you could at least try to comprehend the message that the ever so short article was trying to convey. Perhaps if it was written in crayon and had some pictures you would have been able to decipher the words. Of course if you knew what you were “talking” about when you try to slam O‘Rielly you might get some credit but you obviously haven’t watched his show enough to know that he doesn’t claim to be anything other than an OPINION show host. Can you comprehend that or do I need to get a 6 year old to explain it to you… moron.

It is going to be interesting to see exactly what sends him over the line, or off the cliff or what have you. I find his ongoing bombastic manner to be mildly amusing.

I don’t agree with Ted Koppel, but at the same time, I also recognize that Mr. Koppel is a veteran broadcaster and does deserve respect for all the years he put in. Apparently, Mr. Olberman doesn’t feel the same way. He believes that whatever he says becomes “news”. I guess in a way it does, because he comes out with these wacky comments and they immediately register on the Idiot-o-meter usually around an 8.5. I’d love to know how many people watch his show simply just to hear the latest “I can’t believe he said that” statement.

The other factor that‘s driving this vehicle to the cliff’s edge is the fact that MSNBC’s internal warfare has apparently moved to center stage. Guess Olberman never heard of the old wag about dirty laundry. But, hey, who am I to knock transparency? In this case, the more the merrier.

And like I said, it’s going to be really interesting to see what tips the cart. Stay tuned!!!!

Rather than picking up the topic and discussing what Koppel said, and why he thinks Koppel was wrong, he goes after him personally. If you can’t win the arguement, discredit the source. Last I checked, Keith, your show debuted in March of 2003. I’m curious to know how much time you spent in your weekly 5 hours to talk about the war in Iraq. Not much, I’m guessing.
