Failing to Gain Traction Among GOP Electorate, Gary Johnson Considers Run as Libertarian

New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson Considers to Run as a Libertarian

Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson has been a marijuana legalization advocate  since 1999 and medicinal pot smoker from 2005-2008, outspoken critic of the “social conservative fringe” of the Republican Party, has called for a 43% reduction in defense spending, and has been outside of the mainstream political dialogue and elected office since 2002. That said, Gov. Johnson feels “The Republican Party has left me by the wayside.”

Gov. Johnson is currently running for president in the GOP primary but told the Santa Fe New Mexican Wednesday that he feels “abandoned by the Republican Party,” and is considering going elsewhere:

“In an interview Wednesday, he said he’s seriously considering running for the Libertarian Party nomination for president.

‘I feel abandoned by the Republican Party,’ Johnson said in a phone interview. ‘The Republican Party has left me by the wayside.’

He’s been left out of all but two of the seemingly endless Republican presidential debates. His fundraising is low and his poll numbers are below radar level.

‘If I’d have been included in 16 of the last debates we wouldn’t even be having this conversation,’ Johnson said.

Johnson said there have been ‘overtures made’ by the Libertarian Party. While there‘s no guarantee he’d win the nomination, Johnson believes he’d have a fair chance.”

Gov. Johnson is an avid triathlete that led New Mexico during two successful terms from 1995-2003, leaving the state with a budget surplus after creating 20,000 new jobs and cutting taxes 14 times without ever raising them. As a candidate, Gov. Johnson calls for a complete elimination of the corporate income tax and an internet free of regulation and taxation.While fellow libertarian-leaning candidate Texas Rep. Ron Paul has seen increasing support and been very much a part of the national dialogue, the successful private and public sector executive Johnson has been largely ignored.

Gov. Johnson received a letter from the Republican National Committee Tuesday in regards to the candidate’s request for help getting included in televised GOP debates and by polling organizations. The Santa Fe New Mexican writes of the RNC’s response:

“The letter, written by the national party’s chief counsel, John R. Phillippe Jr., pointed out that there are 21 Republican hopefuls who have filed in the New Hampshire primary. ‘We simply have to have some minimum criteria in order for candidates to participate in these debates,’ Phillippe wrote. ‘Otherwise, the debates would be utter chaos and unhelpful to Republican voters as we select our nominee.’

Phillippe said the threshold for getting into party-sanctioned debates is $1 million in third-quarter fundraising or having an average of 3 percent in polls as averaged by the Real Clear Politics website. “

Gov. Johnson received $236,193 in Third Quarter Fundraising. The former New Mexico Governor is not listed among the top 8 GOP candidates averaged by Real Clear Politics.

So if he and Paul and others who have no chance continue to muddy up the process what we are likely to wind up with is four more years of hands down the worst president ever!! to be elected in this history of the Republic.

      I once long ago listened to the evangelicals.

      I dropped away after a while because of their basic hypocrisy.

      In 1922 J. Gresham Machen, Princeton Theological Seminary explaiend how most Christian Churches were not Christian at all, and that the Evangelicals would follow. He was right

      He said that they were a completely different religion, and nolonger preached the actual Gospel of JESUS CHRIST.

    The good news & bad news about 4 more years of Obomber is that those commenting here are coming from an economic angle, and believe that anything can be restored. (Bad News) Nothing can be recovered from acts of Congress giving away our Production Capital (machines and technology) to the East.

    Bad news is now even uglier since we se SB 1253 now going to the floor. It is effectively the Congress suspending both Habeas Corpus and the Posse Comatatus Act. There can be no half way withdrawal of Rights of Citizenship, so this is a complete withdrawal, and creation of martial law.

    FEMA Camps will be filled while we argue about which candidate to vote for in 2012.

    The decision right now that is most important is which Caliber? and which Action Design (longstroke [AK] or short stroke [FN/SKS/other]or gas induction [AR] as the leading three to choose from.
    You will do well to choose 308 as it outreaches the 223 which you can later pick up off the ground if you really want one of those. USMil is feilding 1 of 4 rifles in Afghan War as enhanced 308 (EBR). Those West of the Miss River will do well to heed this.

    Accept that the Republic is dead, it was dead a long long time ago even before Glenn woke up, and before Woodrow, and you will be better prepared mentally to survive what is coming.

    Obomber and the knuckle scraper in the Whitehouse do not know why they are there. Next up, a Louis & Marie-Antionette moment. It’s inevitable.

    Are libertarians math deprived? I like Paul AND Johnson but it‘s not going to happen if they don’t win the primaries. I want a constitutional originalist but I will take anything to the right of Romney. Where do you think a third party would pull votes from, the left or the right? Does libertarian = the reelect Obama party?

    They emphasize the “pot” issue when speaking of Gary Johnson, but the fact is it is just one of many issues that he has sensible positions on. He took ovethe state of New Mexico running deficits, balanced the budget, and left it after two terms with a surplus. He vetoed more spending bills than all the other 49 governors combined. His main difference from Ron Paul is that he supports abortion rights (a non-starter in the evangelical fringe dominated Republican party. He built a business from nothing to one of the largest construction companies in the state. The fact is, if you like Ron Paul, you will probably like Gary Johnson for the same reasons: he is a sane, pragmatic Libertarian, and he isn’t 76 years old. In the unlikely event Paul gets the Republican nomination, I will vote for him. If not, and Gary Johnson runs as a Libertarian, I will vote for him. And the rest of you tools need to realize there is no real difference between Obama and Romney, Gringich, et al. Any of them will be borrowing more money from the Chinese to bomb the hell out of Iran so we can then borrow billions more to rebuild it.

    I hope he does run as the libertarian candidate. It would be better than Ron Paul running there and skimming GOP votes away. Paul says he won’t run on a 3rd party, let’s hope not. Perot gave us Clinton, and we can’t afford another communist term. The republic is at stake. I hope Glenn is wrong about BHO getting another term. It would mean a very dark time on the earth. Anyone wishing to be the President should realize that and also be aware that splitting the vote can be the straw that breaks the GOP and our attempt to get Obama out! If this guy wants the best for his country and he is not doing extremely well, then he should step aside. otherwise, he shows what he is really interested in; his own political gain, damn the country!     Gov. Johnson is a better fit in the Libertarian party, anyway. The republicans of today would rather deal with “issues” like marriage and abortion instead of dealing with REAL issues like limiting the size and scope of the federal government, defending liberty, and cutting spending.

      I believe it was the independents who voted for Obama in 2008 because they wanted gay marriage. They got socialism instead.
      I don’t think the independents will be that stupid to put social issues over fiscal responsiblility next time.

      You can’t be serious! The independent vote went to Obama because McCain was a horrible choice. Plain and simple. Also, Obama and Biden both publicly stated during the election cycle that they were against gay marriage.
