Fair Share: Celebrities Called Out For Owing Millions in Unpaid Income Taxes

California tax authorities revealed the state’s 500 biggest income tax delinquents Friday, and a surprising number of celebrities made the list.

Pamela Anderson, the “Baywatch” star, reportedly owes $524,241 in unpaid taxes, and Lionel Richie owes $1.1 million.

CNET co-founder Halsey Minor and his wife owe $10.5 million, while the founder of “Girls Gone Wild” Joe Francis owes $794,000.

Similarly, actor Nick Cassavetes and boxer James Toney seemingly owe $273,000 and $354,000, respectively.

The 500 delinquents owe nearly $233 million collectively, according to the IRS, prompting the California tax board to scold: “When taxpayers do not pay their fair share, it places an unfair burden on those who do.”

The news follows the president’s campaign to raise taxes on those earning over $1 million in what is being deemed the “Buffet Rule,” after the billionaire who reportedly wants his taxes raised.

The White House website even allows viewers to “find out how many millionaires pay a lower effective tax rate than you.”  Looks like a few of the president’s millionaire supporters didn’t get the memo!

      I`m confused also and so are these people that stand and smile like fools with this guy. Instead of a photo opp with Obama how about some proof of payment to the IRS from these smiling robots. How about if Obama himself shows some proof of his support to the IRS instead of telling everyone what they need to pay, hell he`s the person responsible for the past three years and nearly six trillion. Wouldn`t it be great if we could turn to our neighbors and tell them that it`s only fare that they should pay your bills for you. Obama has put THE MEAT to the citizens of this country for decades to comes. Talk to your family,friends, and neighbors incourage them to get out and vote in Novemeber. This is not the way it should be in this country. It is the most important election of our lives.

      This is priceless! Now the Gov wants those of us who pay taxes to increase our withholding to help us save money. Let’s see……train the idiots to give more money at 0% so you can tie their money up for up to a year and send a big refund that they will use to buy a new laptop. Very few, if any, actually save the refund.

      The Gov just wants to have the money in their hands and at some point when we are broke won’t be able to give refunds. Then, they will mandate that you can’t lower the amount you are sending in. They are nothing if not brilliant in their devious plans

      Wait, wait, wait…wait one hot minute. These people, these celebrities and other “rich” people don’t have tax accountants or business managers? Come on. We weren’t born yesterday.

      Since I am self employed, I have quarterly estimated tax payments. For the past few years, on April 15th, I was sending in two checks. One check was for the amount that was needed to cover the shortfall in the estimate and the other was to pay for the first quarter estimated earnings.

      So, are these people actually experiencing payment shortfalls in estimates? Or have they just not paid what they knew they owed? There’s a big difference here, particular if their job is like mine, where the cash flow is related directly to the number of job assignments.

      But seriously, I would expect better financial management from these people and their staff.

      Inquiring minds want to know.

      He is telling the 47% of the country that pays no taxes that he is going to get the productive 53%
      that do to pay taxes to pay their fair share. I’m sure that helps understand it a bit more.

      Also, if you remember the assigning of cabinet posts and czar-ships. You are not
      eligible, unless you are a tax delinquent. Geitner, Daschle… If you are REALLY behind,
      you can get a tax provision named after you like the Buffet rule. Fame and tax delinquency
      is a status thing.

      I went to Obama’s site and put in I made 500,000,000 and paid 1 dollar in taxes. Oddly enough 5200 millionaires paid less than me…. So i tried 200,000,000,000 and 1 buck paid. Still 5200 people paid less than me. Tried me real amount and Obama paid a lower rate then I did. Wonder why he takes deductions if paying your “fair share” is such a good thing and loopholes are so bad. Just think about how dumb he thinks his voters are and how greedy he must be. In all ways it would have been best for him being the way he has positioned his argument to pay the full tax rate with no deductions, but he couldn’t he needed that extra 100k….. What the hell can a man living off the government deduct anyways, isn’t everything he needs paid for by us.

      No, apparently what you missed was his entire point.

      He is raising the tax rate on people that make over $1 million per anum. That is not the 53% of tax paying Americans, it is the top most 1%. 99% of the country will see no change in what they pay.

      The wealthiest of Americans already pay less percentage in tax than they have in the last 20 years, and I repeat 20 years.

      America is home to the largest social income gaps in the entire first world, and I repeat the entire first world.

      When America had its surplus under Clinton the tax rate for the wealthiest Americans was 39.6% (as opposed to just 35% currently), and I repeat 39.6%

      The difference between my repetitions and yours is that mine are verifiable facts whereas yours are just redundant ramblings.

      I know a person who stopped paying his taxes after he found out about the 6 Szars who had to decline because they failed to pay their taxes. Then there was Turbo Tax Timmy – Charley Rangle – the Rev. al Sharpton. The list goes on and on. This person I’m talking about has dummbed up his tax return where he gets a small return and so far so good. Normally he would owe about 5 to 7 thousand.Now we know why we have a 16 trillion dollar debt.

      Nice article. Economists differ on a lot of points so don’t take what any one says as infallible fact.

      However, to your point, you can view the 47% not paying taxes as a problem with Social benefit programs OR you can view the social benefit programs as means to address the 47% being deeply impoverished. Analogously, do umbrellas cause rain? or are they simply indicative of the weather.

      I find thinking in edge cases to be the easiest way to digest complicated problems. If we continue on the course we are on – where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer – and take it to its most extreme you have 1 person owning ALL the wealth and 299,999,999 other Americans owning 0. Clearly, this kind of society would never work.

      So what if we take it to the other extreme, where all 300 million Americans own exactly 0.00003% of the wealth? Well, this sort of society seems far more sustainable than the other edge case.

      What you can conclude from this is that the increasing wealth disparity is moving us towards chaos. You can have wealthy and poor, but it must be within reason. Redistribution of wealth via Government mandated taxes is the easiest and most practical solution.

      Check – your move.

      A total tax revolt would be a great start to stopping Washington. Fact is if everyone would just stop listening to D.C. and live the free live that the Constitution was suppose to grant us. We could stop the tyrants. I personally think states should just keep all the taxes collected and use them for the people with in their states. Send Washington 25% of the taxes collected to fund the Military and if thats’s not good eneough stop sending that as well.

      This does not actually surprise me. If you remember, Obama was having a difficult time when he first got in office finding people to fill positions that were paying taxes. Maybe that is why he started appointing czars since they were not given the once over by the Senate!

      Contributions to Dems is probably the standard excuse that they give for why they don’t pay all their taxes or perhaps like Mr. Buffett they are disputing how much they owe, while saying that they want to pay more–liberal logic. Further if any of these people were say Joe, the Plumber, their butt would either be in jail or their property would have been seized not for non-payment, but for the crime of not being a Democrat.

    While I refuse to be snookered into this smokin’ mirrors baloney, it irritates me more that so many owe taxes, have the monies to pay the outstanding taxes but does the flipping IRS go after them with the same vengeance as they do those earning less? And the HC bill is supposed to ADD 16K workers to administrate our healthcare???!! They can’t even do the job they are supposed to do – COLLECT BACK TAXES DUE! Criminy…what, is anyone who works for the government and is paid with tax dollars doing their job out there or are they flipping ALL at conventions????

    CUT the budget, stop the spending and start producing – or get the heck out.
    But that’s just my opinion.

      @Stiggs, they all need to be held responsible for paying their taxes. If not jail them until they do. The IRS seized my Brother in Laws Bank Accounts for over a year, claiming he owed taxes. At the end he didn’t. They should do the same with the rest of the country, regardless.

Our GAO and goverrnment economists do it all the time and then repost the numbers over and over again because they are never correct. Doesn’t matter who is in charge, no one wants to pay high taxes. Celebrities are not that bright. They are some of the most cheated and conned people because they do not follow their own finances. And yet they are happy to applaud higher taxes and don’t even PAY their own.

      The POTUS pays a lower tax rate than his secretary. The POTUS gifts his daughters tens of thousands to reduce his tax burden and have taxpayers subsidize their college education. He doesn’t need the tax breaks. By golly, he is acting like a greedy CEO. If the “leader” acts like this, why not everyone else?

      Hey Darmok, as much as I love your posts, you are wrong in your assumption that they will be hit by the higher tax rates that Obamao is seeking. Those are income taxes, NOT property taxes. Since the wealthy can simply sit back and live off of their accrued wealth without actually having any income, the tax rates that Buffett et al are advocating won’t apply to them, only to the poor schmucks who are busting their backsides trying to get to that level. The increased income tax rates will help consolidate the wealth into the hands of the few, not spread it out among the many. If you want to “spread the wealth” you don’t do it with income taxes, you do it with high property tax rates on all assets including trust funds that force the Kennedys, Rockefellers, and others to pay taxes on the trust funds that allow them to pass massive wealth from one generation to the next tax free. Ever notice that Kennedy and Rockefeller were the biggest supporters of inheritance taxes while paying none themselves.

      BTW I don’t know which is worse: The fact that your screen name is an obscure line from Star Trek the Next Generation or the fact that I know that it’s an obscure line from Star Trek the Next Generation. “Live long and prosper” or vote for Obamao and die early and broke courtesy of Obamacare and ever rising tax rates.
