Fair Share? VP Biden Collects Rent of $2,200/Month From Gov’t for Secret Service Lodging

Looking for a nice waterfront cottage for the summer? Don’t ask Vice President Joe Biden, his place is full.
Since April, Biden has collected more than $13,000 in rent for a cottage adjacent to his waterfront home near Wilmington, Delaware, which he has charged to the federal government for housing secret service agents protecting him and his family. The Washington Times reports:
“Edwin M. Donovan, special agent in charge at the Secret Service’s Office of Government and Public Affairs in Washington, said the agency pays $2,200 in rent per-month, the same amount a previous tenant had paid before moving out.
He said the close location provides a level of security for the Biden family the agency might not have had otherwise. Asked if the Secret Service typically pays rent to the people it protects, he said, ‘It’s a rental property so we pay rent there.’
Taxpayer watchdogs say the Secret Service should do everything it can to protect Mr. Biden, but they wonder whether he should be collecting rent from the agency while it’s doing its job.”
Biden and his wife Jill reported earning $379,178 last year, which is miniscule in comparison to the incomes of many of the Vice President’s fellow lawmakers in Washington. Still, many find it odd that the man who has been leading deficit reduction negotiations between Republicans and the White House over the last few weeks is collecting such a pretty penny from the U.S. Secret Service.
“’He should be afforded every single protection available to him and his family, as should every vice president and president,’ said Leslie Paige, spokeswoman for the Washington-based Citizens Against Government Waste.
‘But this arrangement seems bizarre to me,’ she added. ‘You’d think the vice president, who shepherded the deficit committee, would think twice about charging the Secret Service rent. Why would he need the money? I don’t get it.’”
Maybe the secret service can take up Amtrak Joe’s old D.C. to Wilmington commute.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 1:51pmThis has to be an ethics violation. Joe Biden is personally profiting from Taxpayer funded services. Talk about nerve! I am so pissed off at the blatant corruption from our officials.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 1:50pmHe should get the rent if that’s what the previous tenant paid – it’s private property … but, I’d like to see him donate it towards paying down the national debt.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 1:52pmIndeed as it is a private property for rent then as a landlord he can rent it for fair market values he can obtain. I wish he would give his rental fees AND his salary to pay off the debt.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 2:16pmLiberals only believe in paying their fair share with other peoples money. Since we are paying the rent it would stand to reason that he would not be violating the liberal code if he donated the rent money to a worthy cause.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 1:50pmCharging for your security personel to stay on your property so they can ahhh, protect you? Hmm, somehow I think this might not be such a good idea. Security guys/ gals might feel somehow slighted by this, might make them hesitate ever so slightly to lay their life on the line for what, a tight-wad hypocrite landlord? If it were me these brave patriots would get star treatment 24/7. Just saying, when one of their birthdays rolls around they wouldn’t just get a card from my secretary, hell, I’d spring for the party.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 1:48pmIf he was using the home for rental income and the SS took it over then yes they have to pay him for lost income he could be making. Its not like he was getting money form the state to live in his own home like Palin, lol

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 1:52pmI do belive Joe makes over $250,000 per year. Why do we have to give him more?? This is so typical of the bloated, over indulged and useless Drones of the Left. These are the “people” who tell us how we should give more and more of our money to help those less fortunate, while “they” refuse to give any of their own. I make nowhere near $250,000 per year and I will bet my charitable giving is far more then the paltry amount given by these drones. We must eliminate these drones from our midst ASAP…Just sayin’

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 1:45pmDon’t they mean it costs American taxpayers $2,200 a month? Why doesn’t he just hire the Black Panthers to stand outside of his home instead? I think it would be nice if the Secret Service could cease the conduction of the detail.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 1:40pmAs much as I… dislike Uncle Biden, if he owns the property he should be able to rent it to anybody. the govt would be renting property to be close to the VP anyway. I don’t see THAT much of a problem.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 1:35pmWhy do you think we have a Debt Crisis. Gov’t paying itself for things it already does. We have massive duplication of efforts and procurement in Gov’t spending and this is just the latest example of the attitude of those we trust to make the decisions on behalf of “We the People”.
