Family Group Protests Illinois Teacher‘s ’Vagina Dance’ Song

Do you need to know any more than the number is performed to the tune of the Hokey Pokey song?

The Daily Herald:

A Crystal Lake high school health teacher’s activity designed to teach sophomore students how the female reproductive system works has caught the ire of a conservative religious group.

The Illinois Family Institute, a nonprofit ministry based in Carol Stream, posted an article on its website this week claiming Jacqulyn Levin, a health and physical education teacher at Prairie Ridge high school, taught students about female anatomy using “the Vagina Dance.” The article states the dance, which the group said involved pointing to and singing about reproductive parts while prancing around the room, was set to the tune of the Hokey Pokey.

As you might imagine, the IFI has little bit of a problem with this:

Her selection of this inappropriate instructional activity demonstrated a lack of empathy for those who may have a degree of modesty and self-respect that Levin does not possess. Did she consider that some students might feel uncomfortable participating in or even watching this dance and that they might fear being ridiculed if they chose to opt-out?

Her decision to use this dance as a teaching tool also reveals that she has no commitment to fostering modesty (please don’t be deceived by the attempt of “progressives” to conflate essential modesty with some kind of priggish, neurotic prudery). The very fact that a teacher would consider such an activity reflects how debased and immodest a culture we have. And it reveals that she has no regard for the values of all the families who have entrusted their children to her tutelage.

When a father complained about the dance, she defended it as a “kinesthetic” device to help students memorize body parts. The “kinesthetic” argument is simply a rationalization, an obvious and foolish attempt to conceal the inappropriateness and silliness of the activity with a patina of pedagogical legitimacy. Somehow few teachers in math, science, literature, or social studies feel the need to employ “kinesthetic” activities to facilitate memorization. If ever there was a subject in which “kinesthetic” activities would be inappropriate, it would be seem to be female sexual anatomy in a coed class.

School officials, you might suspect, have a different view:

“It is overtly misrepresentative of the activity in class,” said Jeff Puma, spokesman for Crystal Lake High School District 155. “There was no music, no song and no movement around the class. The name that the report gave it is a nickname that the students have called it. It is not the name the teacher gave it.”

The district’s director of curriculum, Scott Kubelka, said the five-minute activity was used to reinforce information the students had previously learned through textbooks and other lessons.

“This was part of the district’s approved curriculum,” Kubelka said. “Certainly the district would not approve something that they thought was disrespectful.”

Kubelka said the activity, which has been used in the past, was a kinesthetic way of explaining the female reproductive organs.

“It is a mnemonic device to help students memorize parts of the anatomy and function,” Kubelka said.

Certainly I don’t blame any fifteen- or sixteen-year-old kid for wanting the earth to swallow them up at the sight of their teacher doing something called “the Vagina Dance” and asking them to sing along.

    Well after all the name of the state is ILLinois with the emphasis on the ILL>

    I’ve lived here most of my adult life and as I promised during the election to friends, family and anyone else listening, if this state elected Dem Status QUO Quinn I would pack my $%^&* and leave….. well the bags have been packed since NOV 3rd and it’s hello Colorado at the end of February.

    This state has slipped into what I call ‘Illegal Alien Ghetto ITIS’ thanks to 20 years of Daley Sanctuary ghetto humping policies and as a result it’s ruined for eternity for it and only getting worse since the ghettoites in CHitcago are about to vote DeadFISH RHambo mayor soon.

    ADIOS ILLinoiS *UCKERS, have fun paying those 65% increased income taxes, although for the mostly unemployed scum in this state and city that’s a non-issue. However, for us working people it‘s outrageous but I won’t be paying…….and the rest of the country ain’t far behind this dump unless the liberals are excommunicated from all public policy-making positions..

      Chicago Ray, I read that you were moving to Colorado. Cool, this is a illegal alien destination also. Denver is a safe haven city too. I hope you land a job before you arrive, it’s getting tough here. Stay away From Boulder, unless you like commies. The tax rate isn’t 65% yet, but I could see it happening. Our new Governor has ran a lot of work out of Colorado. Good luck and be smart!

      Just moved from CO; don’t you know they are pretty liberal there too? We first moved to Wa. state- this was in April 10′. Then my husband’s job relocated us (temporarily) to (dare I say it; southern California in Oct 10′ – yikes). We will be moving to Az this summer. Well- maybe Az, it might be Tx, or it could somewhere else. I have stopped learning my home address- whats the point.

      I love Colorado though- the weather is awesome. But, again, getting more and more liberal by the day.

    I’d be in favor of The Fairness Doctrine if there were an amendment attach that made it illegal to be a liberal in the United States. Liberalism is a disease, like cancer. If you don’t fight it off, it spreads and spreads to wherever it can.

    What’s next? The man on man, woman on woman, same sex pound it, munch it dance? Part of the curriculum????

    My sons were taught about sex and the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman long before they were in their teens. Perhaps if our public schools and the Department of Education were reorganized to pre-DOE fundamentals and kept to the three foundations of education…reading, writing, and arithmetic…our children would not be graduates of the most corrupt and dysfunctional educational system in the free world.

      I don’t have my David Barton book in front of me (I am at work) but in the book, “Seperation of Church and State, What the Founders Really Meant”, Barton quotes a federal judge as saying that teaching abstince (period) IS teaching religion, therefore banned. There are no age limitations so by default, if you tell your 9 year old daughter to not have sex, that is equivilent of teaching her religion (Christian implied due to case samples). This is why it is OK to show students how to put a condom on but not ok to tell students to wait for marriage (an out dated institution according to the progressives).

      XCORI8R, lol , was funny and a very good point. Reminds me of the flavored lubricant provided with the condoms at that other school. They obviously think that the parents are to stupid to teach their own children about the birds and the bees. This is offensive and shows poor taste on the part of the school district and it’s board members. No worry for the teacher who is backed by the teachers.. union. No moral standards here. We have to take back the control of our children.

      I have never heard anyone elucidate how western society has omitted God as well as Ann Graham, daughter of the the pre-eminent preacher and American sage Billy Graham, and this was quoted by a Jew, Ben Stein, on 12/18/05 on CBS’s Sunday Morning commentary,

      “Billy Graham’s daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her “How could God let something like this Happen?” (regarding Katrina)

      Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, “I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we’ve been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives.

      In light of recent events…terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O’Hare [she was murdered, her body found recently] complained she didn’t want prayer in our schools, and we said OK.

      Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.

      Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn’t spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem. We said an expert should know what he’s talking about. And we said OK.

      Now we’re asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don’t know right from wrong, and why it doesn’t bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

      Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with “WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.”

      Good answer Buckeye. I’d say they know more than most adults, except that, you know, there are a few skills and little tricks you develop over time. As well as the fact that as immediate satisfaction of intense passion fades, other less intense but more emotionally satisfying interactions take over.

      Gee…Let me see if I understand what goes on in the Public Indoctrination Centeres…errr I mean schools…
      They can learn how to put on a condom in 30 seconds or less yet I would venture to say they couldn’t spell condom or tell you how may they could buy with $3.00 if they were 3 for a quarter or make change from the $5.00 bill they would use to pay for them.

      And we are puzzled why after spending more per pupil that anywhere else in the world the kids are failing and falling behind the rest of the world

      Sorry folks, but I’m not nearly as incensed as you are. Perhaps somewhat tasteless, but I believe the teacher showed creativity and imagination – not that she couldn’t have found a better way. But, I will bet that the students will never forget what she was teaching. Having been in a position to treat woment in the Navy, you would be amazed how many don’t know what goes on INSIDE them between the navel and the knees. It doewn’t hurt for the males to know, too, for future reference.

      yesterday I had asked Amer.Soldier what video he wanted to see…I guess that was inappropriate for this blog..because its been taken off…which was probably mean of me…sorry about that..but like I said before this is no joking matter…this is some of the crap they are teaching our young people…and unless we do something about it and not think its funny…it will just get worse…don’t know how it could get worse, but it seems to be doing just that…hence why I homeschool..
