The armed man who walked into the Washington headquarters of the Family Research Council and reportedly shot a security guard Wednesday morning has been identified as Floyd Corkins, 28, of Virginia, NBC News reports.
Corkins was taken into custody by the FBI following the shooting and was being interviewed.

Local and federal investigators work to gather evidence after a security guard was shot in the arm at the headquarters of the Family Research Council August 15, 2012 in Washington, DC. The shooter is in FBI custody and has not yet been charged, authorities said. (Credit: Getty Images)
“We don’t know enough yet about him … or mentally what he’s thinking,” said James McJunkin, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Washington field office.
The guard, who was an employee of the FRC, was taken to a hospital in stable condition after being shot.
“Our first concern is with our colleague who was shot today,” the group’s president, Tony Perkins, said in a statement.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said in a statement that he was appalled by the shooting. “There is no place for such violence in our society,” he said. “My prayers go out to the wounded security guard and his family, as well as all the people at the Family Research Council whose sense of security has been shattered by today’s horrific events.”
The Family Research Council advocates conservative positions on social issues and strongly opposes gay marriage and abortion. Fox News reports that Corkins posed as an intern and was carrying a Chick-fil-A bag with him during the attack.
Sources told Fox News that after guard took away his gun, the suspect said, “Don’t shoot me, it was not about you, it was what this place stands for.”
Perkins was an outspoken defender of Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy’s public stand against same-sex marriage, which made the fast-food chain a flashpoint in the nation’s culture wars. The Cathy family foundation has funded the Family Research Council.
“He’s taking a bold stand,” Perkins said after Cathy’s comments were reported. “Chick-fil-A is a Bible-based, Christian-based business who treats their employees well. They have been attacked in the past about their stand. But they refuse to budge on this matter, and I commend them for what they are doing.”
More from Fox News:
UPDATE: The Associated Press has learned that Corkins had been volunteering at a community center for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people before his attack.
A law enforcement official has identified the suspect arrested in Wednesday’s shooting as Floyd Corkins II of Herndon, Va. Investigators were interviewing his neighbors.
Another official says the shooter made a negative reference about the work of the Family Research Council before opening fire. The officials spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.
David Mariner is executive director of The DC Center for the LGBT Community. He says Corkins had been volunteering at the center for about the past 6 months. Mariner describes Corkins as “kind, gentle and unassuming.”
This story is breaking and will be updated.

Posted on August 15, 2012 at 6:43pmBruce is right for once except for one thing. Yes, the Left should condemn this behavior, but then Bruce virtually paints the entirety of Conservatives as being anti-gay and violent. It’s a small number of people that are driven by bigotry and hatred… FAR more hate and intolerance comes from the Left, but they usually remain silent with their own evils. Most of the people on the Right do condemn this behavior and do it most every time.
Report Post »I’ve had a couple of gay friends. I have no problem with them if they don‘t do perverse things in public and don’t obsessively talk about it. A few years ago, I even asked a black lesbian if she would like to move in with me, but she was afraid to live in a mostly white community. I had a boss that was black, but he had no problems living here at all. Just the opposite. I was talking with him about my desire to work in another country. He said (this isn’t an exact quote, but it’s in context), “I have actually found it very nice being a minority. Everyone always treats me very nicely. I think you might find it nice living as a minority too.” Of course that depends on the society.
People walk on eggshells around him. I’m different from the Liberals though. I wasn’t afraid to talk about his experiences as a black in an almost all white community. He even seemed to like me more than my coworkers simply for ignoring those “politically correct eggshells.”

It is hypocritical, arrogant, and intellectually dishonest for you to brand all who disagree with you as hateful. I would consider myself, as you say “anti-homosexual”, I am a Christian and it is the practice of homosexuality that I am against, not the homosexual. I would never give a wink to violence against any person or animal. I would not associate with anyone who called themselves a Christian who would. The true issue here is the majority being kicked around by the minority. As long as Christians turn the other cheek and stay silent we have our rights trampled on. We all hear God’s warning shots and will prayerfully be at the polls to get this country back on track. At the risk of sounding hostile, I can not understand why anyone who truly, hates the laws of a land they are living in, stay.

Posted on August 15, 2012 at 6:06pm@PubliusPencilman-for once, you are somewhat correct, but one BIG difference between this shooting and the other 2, 3 if you count Giffords/Tuscon—THERE WERE PEOPLE THERE WITH GUNS TO STOP HIM. They had the confidence to tackle him because they were armed. Guarantee that it would have been worse had none of the guards were armed. So many lives could have been saved and injuries avoided at the other shootings had there have been any type of concealed carry folks allowed…at least it would have shifted the odds…

Ignorance like what you just spewed across my screen is the exact problem with the left. You spew platitudes and ill informed crap without having a clue as to what you are speaking about. Acts like this are not those of law abiding people and certainly not the kind of gun play promoted by the NRA. IF you had the slightest idea of what you were talking about you would know that the NRA promotes not only lawful ownership of firearms but proper and responsible handling of firearms. But leave it to an ignorant tool such as yourself to demagogue and falsely portray an organization that is honorable and certainly doing more for the citizenry of this country then that empty suit that is currently squatting in the oval office. So please cut the crap and at least try to make an honest argument instead of inane BS like you posted here (lets face it, you have mastered the inane in almost all if not all of your postings on the Blaze).

I am sure as hell not going to copy and paste. You’ll have to go back and look. Comments such as these are probably still there. The other side of the coin from a communist. Skinheads are not right-wing, they are just as big leftists as the commies and socialists.
In the Temple shooting, there was no one to confront and stop the shooter. At FRC, there was a guard who did an admirable job of stopping the terrorist with a political agenda. This yet another violent leftist hate-filled attack. The kind that was completely absent during the explosion of the Tea Party protests. Posted on August 15, 2012 at 11:57pmAs to why the Family Research Council is a hate group, you want facts? Here are some…
They have supported the myth that homosexuals are pedophiles, something that is not supported by any scientific research. They cite the American College of Pediatricians, which is a purposefully deceptive name, meant to be confused with the American Academy of Pediatricians. The ACA is a extreme right group not affiliated with the AAP, more concerned with the promotion of politics and religion than with science.
A senior research fellow at the FRC has called for homosexuals to be deported. Further, he has said that homosexuality should be criminalized.
(Source: http://tinyurl.com/27lhrh2)

And you are right. Saying you support traditional marriage is not hateful.
However, it is curious you would accuse me of “liberal spin” when the phrase “pro traditional marriage” is one of spin. It is clear that phrase often employed as Orwellian double-speak. One is not “pro” something simply because they hate something else. Scoundrels use the term “pro-traditional marriage“ because it sounds far more pleasant than ”I hate homosexuals.” Hating homosexuals does absolutely nothing to help any heterosexual marriage. If you support traditional marriage, then show it by supporting traditional marriage, not attacking homosexuals.
It is the same as saying, “I‘m not against women’s suffrage, I’m just for traditional gender roles.“ Or ”I’m not anti-black, I’m just pro-slavery.” Hyperbolic examples to be sure, but a clear thinking person can see the point.
Cathy and company, despite hiding behind the “pro traditional marriage” label have shown support for venomously hateful groups, such as the American Family Association, who has promoted criminalizing gays, deporting gays, kidnapping the children of gays, behind boycotts of stores that hire gays, the killing of promiscuous straights, has attacked “Jewish-control” of the media, attacked Sikhism for a Sikh prayer in Congress, attacked American Indians,
Report Post »Silversmith
Posted on August 16, 2012 at 8:30amBruce – you lose. You continue to suggest that Cathy’s views are more more hateful than this violence. You are missing the idea that violence is a different kind of expression than anything Cathy is saying or doing. Agree, disagree, use your finances, have the debate. Using violence takes this to an entire new place. It corrupts the discourse. It commits us to a different form of interaction, and because it abandons the discussion, it changes peoples mind about the issue. Disagreement does not intrinsically make an argument hateful. And once words like hate and evil are used with such ease in the discussion, it isn’t long before some sweaty browed finger pointer takes out a gun.

Posted on August 15, 2012 at 4:56pmSo let me get this straight: when Nidal shot up and killed Ft Bragg soldiers, yelling Allauackbar, that was “workplace violence.” When that idiot white supremacist shot up the Sikh temple out of racial hate, that was “terrorism”. And when some guy shoots up a conservative office, it’s just an “act of violence”?

Posted on August 15, 2012 at 5:39pmWell, yes–it was an “act of violence.” Given that we know so little about the perpetrator, your outrage at what this incident is being called is very premature. It’s a bit sad that your first instinct was to race to the message board and hem and haw about how you are somehow being persecuted.

Wrong.
I said and meant it was a gay person who hates – a “gay hater”. That is, I believe, quite accurate.

It’s the Lib Progressives that see Americans as constituency groups, and tell their groups that you don’t have because this other group is keeping it from you. Men hold women down. Whites hold blacks down. Christians hold gays down. Conservatives hold progressives down. Stand up and unite! Occupy!
Progressives use tolerance and free thinking to get their ideas mainstreamed, and then shut the door behind them.
It’s the intolerance and divisive hate that causes a radical to storm a building and harm people…..not the second amendment
Report Post »PubliusPencilman
Posted on August 16, 2012 at 9:10amRajcaj,
Enough with the counter-intuitive spinning nonsense. One side pushes for stricter gun control, the other side actively talks about how important gun ownership is and that citizens should seek “second amendment” solutions. If someone walks into a building waving a gun around, you cannot call this ideologically consistent with the creed of the former. This is so obvious I don’t know how you think you can spin it.

Hahah. This is such a common argument tactic with you folks. You literally made up something that didn’t happen in order to try to win the argument. You invented a situation that would affirm your ideological assumptions rather than talk about what actually happen. What’s sad is that you actually seem to think that this is a valid argument.
