Family: Teacher Forbids Boy From Hanging U.S. Flag Pic Because It Might Offend Others

An 11-year-old boy in Orange, MA is in the middle of flag controversy after he and his family claim one of his teachers banned him from hanging a picture of an American flag he drew in the classroom because it might offend other students. The boy‘s dad is adamant his son’s civil rights were violated. But the school has a different take, and says the prohibition was because the boy disobeyed instructions:
WWLP-TV reports:
The Butterfield Elementary School is at the center of controversy for the incident on Monday. According to Frankie Girard’s father, John, the boy was in art class drawing a picture.
“He was denied hanging the flag up. And, he asked if he could just even hang it on his desk, and he was told no. He could take the picture that he drew and take it home and be proud of it there,” Girard said.
So, that is where it is, among the hundreds of other family pictures and military honors that adorn the walls of the Girard family home.
According to his father, the teacher told Frankie that his drawing of the American Flag would offend one of his classmates. “We’re allowing him to display his civil rights and be proud of who he is, but we’re denying Franklin those same rights,” Girard said.
22News tried to contact the Superintendent, Dr. Paul Burnim. He refused to go on camera, but told 22News over the phone that nobody ever told Franklin the drawing was offensive, and said the only reason it wasn’t hung was because Franklin was supposed to be doing other work; not drawing a picture. In a statement he said: “Each of our schools flies the American Flag every day. At the Butterfield School, the Pledge of Allegiance is recited by students and staff. And the other schools recite the Pledge of Allegiance at least once per week.”

We should be raising our children and teaching them to be proud to live in the land of freedome … The USA! Everyone living here should be honored to say the pledge to this great nation every day! No matter where they come from . This is what our country was founded on. The Immigrants that wanted freedom from oppression and came to our shores to find that everyone was welcome. How can an American flag be offensive when you have chosen to live in this country? If you dont like it then leave. I for one will say it as many times as I need with pride! I would have hung up the picture or even just told him to put it away til after class if it was something he was not to be doing. She could have hung it up after class. So many other options on this one then what the teacher did.

Who was the teacher referring to that would be offended? Why is anyone in this country that would be offended by the American Flag? Is this teacher related to Obama? This is when the other parents of students in that class need to not be sheeple, show up as a group at the school and say – “we do not want a teacher who is against American symbols being displayed teaching our children”, very simple. See that’s where Dr. Bernim just epicly failed in his response. “We’re allowing him to display his civil rights and be proud of who he is, but we’re denying Franklin those same rights,” Girard said. Franklin‘s father’s statement implies that another boy was allowed to display some artwork he had done, was he disobeying instructions too??

This kid needs to crack his books when it‘s book crackin’ time. Don’t let the flag part muddy it up for you. He was drawing instead of whatever work they were supposed to do and now his parents want to get all up in the school‘s face and file a lawsuit like some total liberals instead of spanking that kid’s rear end and telling him to do his math. His parents could have embelished the story because they share the same slanted view of public school that you people have.
meanwhile, you praise a teacher for hitting a student when you don’t have many facts on that story either. you’re just filling in the blanks with your imaginations.
