Family Upset After They Find Misspelled Name on 9/11 Memorial

NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — Jeffrey Schreier is one of nearly 3,000 names engraved on the World Trade Center memorial. When family members visited the memorial on Sunday and saw his name, they were upset. Not just because of the memory it invoked, but because it was misspelled.

The family of Schreier told WNBC-TV the R and the second E in his first name were switched on the memorial. So it read ‘Jeffery’.

His sister Janice Hart says she couldn’t believe it when she saw the error Sunday, when the memorial opened to family members.

Memorial spokesman Michael Frazier tells WNBC the letters apparently were reversed when the name was entered into a database. He says memorial officials regret the error and are working on fixing it.

This image, from Schreier's tribute on Legacy.com, shows a message from his wife on the 10-year anniversary on 9/11.

Schreier worked in the mailroom at financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald. His remains were never recovered.

My God, upset? Mistakes happen. Let the people know it is wrong. I understand your hurt and your pain. Being upset implies someone didn’t care about your sons name. I am sure the people who made this monument cared very much about each and every letter they engraved.

I hate to say it, but that’s what happens when people spell their kids’ names wrong so they can be “unique” and then they get upset when people don’t spell it right. Really!! Life is difficult enough from the get go, is it really necessary to give your child one more issue they will have to deal with all their lives.

Seriously? Misspelled? I hate to break this to you, but the spelling “Jeffrey” is actually the older of the two common spellings. If anything is misspelled, it’s “Jeffery”. Given my name is Jeffrey, this is an issue I’ve looked into a lot, although the easiest example to point out that the “-rey“ ending is older is to point out ”Geoffrey Chaucer”. If you want to complain about anything, complain about the “Jeff” being “misspelled.”

That was 2010. How old was he? You have to look at the popularity of his name when he was born, you idiot. And besides, I don’t care if it was an odd spelling, they should check those things. My husband (and his dad, and his grandpa) have any unusually spelled name that gets misspelled all the time. I got to where I just automatically spell it. As to being that upset? I wouldn’t be, but that’s because I deal with it all the time through my husband, and myself. do you know how many spellings there are for Lori?

You guys are being rude to Bunny Beads.

She has clearly established that both spellings are actively used.

She also has a point about people spelling common names differently for uniqueness. When I volunteer for a non-profit, I usually enter names from the lists of volunteers for each meal. You would never believe the number of ways a name can be spelled. Different cultural backgrounds seem to also influence a greater degree of uniqueness to many common American names.

However, I like all my accounts, insurances, statements, certificates, and diplomas spelled correctly. And, I am insistent on having my middle initial in my full name!

I’m sorry but this is much ado about nothing. I just watched a special about the making of these and it’s easily fixed although not at no expense to the already drained “911 memorial” overruns that soar higher than those towers ever did.

I grieve year after year like most of you for these folks and knew 4 people personally who were killed that day.

However: At times many of these people forget all the country has already done for them in their time of grief and frankly I’m tired of the whining from many of these “911 family members”. They‘re lost loved ones would be ashamed I’d bet anything on this earth at many of their petty griping, selfishness and outright opportunism. Were this my loved one I‘d quietly point out the mistake and I’m certain they’d fix it immediately.

In fact I was watching a special about some of these widows the other day, and they were there feigning all this grief while being filmed in 2 million dollar homes 99% of Americans couldn’t afford, most of which were paid for by insurance and the government which means you and I.

How many other “terror victim’ families cashed in like many of these 911 widows? NONE. Be thankful for the attention you‘ve received and don’t be so petty.

I‘m not surprised at this hating couple’s disdain for the very country that entrusted them with representing us who cheerish the virtues of freedom and industry. They listened to Rev. You may disagree with them politically (it appears that most here do, no?) but the incessant and repeated attacks on both of them in these pages is very disrespectful. Is there some part about them being intelligent, black, happy, and having a wonderful family you don’t like? Seriously.
