Famous Drill Instructor Apologizes for Obama ‘Socialism’ Comments

The famous Marine drill instructor who created a stir last week when he said President Obama was trying to implement socialism has released a statement apologizing for those remarks.

R. Lee Ermey said today that his comments were “misguided” and “emotionally based” and for that he is “truly sorry.” His full statement, which is posted on his website as a splash page, is below:

A Message from the Gunny

“I recently appeared at a fundraising event designed to collect toys and raise awareness for underprivileged children. While that event succeeded in raising thousands of dollars and hundreds of toys for this cause, I regret that I delivered a monologue that was inappropriately critical of the President. I was trying to be entertaining and simply went too far in this instance. I am mindful that my success as an entertainer relates in part to my experience in the Marine Corps, my devotion to its members, and the deep respect I have for members of all our Armed Forces. My comments should not be seen as reflecting on them or their views. I was just very disappointed in the amount of success that we were having raising toys and money for the underprivileged children this season. The poor economy has greatly hampered our efforts. My comments were misguided, and emotionally based, and for that I am truly sorry.”

Semper Fi

Mediaite wonders if the apology is a move to appease the insurance company GEICO. As many know, Ermey has had a resurgence as a GEICO commercial star. But recently, another GEICO voice actor was fired for a foray into political talk:

A few months ago, GEICO fired voice actor Lance Baxter AKA D.C. Douglas for being critical of the Tea Party and Freedomworks. Not only did they fire him, they fired him for a political outburst on his own free time. Will they now fire Ermey?

That could be the reason. But some may just wonder if this is Ermey crossing into “mamby pamby land”:

He spoke what he truly felt and thinks. But, my understanding is that military people are not supposed to say anything politcally when dressed in military uniforms.

Maybe someone who has been in the military can better explain this.

What is an enlisted man supposed to do when the President of the U.S. is also the “domestic enemy” of America?

“(a) Enlistment Oath.— Each person enlisting in an armed force shall take the following oath:
“I, XXXXXXXXXX, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”"

      Mirimichi.

I’m not in the military, but I was born and raised in it. I know my Dad was always extremely careful about his political comments. When representing the military, a man or woman is to remain politically neutral and give civility to the Commander and Chief (even if he doesn’t deserve it).

Besides, when did we in America forget the importance of good manners? I think what he said was spot-on, but the apology was appropriate too. Toys for Tots is about charity, not politics.

Hey Ray— the kicker in the oath is “obey the orders of the President”

I’ve read dozens of times on this site vets claiming they took the oath to defend the Constitution but not the president. Where do you draw the line…… More specifically, would it violate the oath if they weren’t to obey the pres. orders if the orders were in violation of the Constitution?

I’m disappointed Sgt. Ermey. I thought you was a “tell the truth” Marine. Sgt. Ermey, you were right the 1st time. Many Marines and other soldiers fought and died to keep communism off our shores and Obama and his commies are shoving it down our throats and we know you know it too. Stop apologizing for telling the truth.

If he’s representing the Marines in the minds of the people, then he’s right to apologize for SAYING his comment. But you’ll notice that he never apologized for THINKING it or BELIEVING it, which is also right. I‘ll give him two thumbs up for saying what we’re all thinking and another two thumbs up for admitting that he used the wrong platform for saying it.

I did read the same thing you all read. He never apologized for the content, only for the inappropriateness of the venue in which it was said. However, I still believe that he should have not even apologized for that. While the venue may not have been appropriate, he caved into GEICO, or whoever else “got” to him and his apology was in response to that, and not to the concept that he realized this may not have been the best place to say it. Even still, I do believe our Constitution allows us all the right to express our disgust at the President… it’s called the First Amendment. He should tell the agents of denial to go shove it.

Also, to those that keep saying Obama is a Socialist, please state which policies are socialist. He looks much more capitalist than socialist based on any reasonable understanding of the two terms. Finally, your first amendment rights relate only to government power, not to private parties. Your boss can fire you for political comments with impunity. You said:

“I am amazed at how people get the facts wrong. The GEICO spokesman criticized the Tea Party and was fired, so what does owner Warren Buffett’s friendship have to do with anything.”

Valid point, I wondered the same thing.

“Also, to those that keep saying Obama is a Socialist, please state which policies are socialist. He looks much more capitalist than socialist based on any reasonable understanding of the two terms.”

Socialism: When the government owns and/or controls the means of production.
Plank in every socialist party credo I’ve ever seen: Single payer/socialized medicine

      So…

The push for single payer, first, and lacking that the placing of tools in place to force single payer eventually via the unconstitutional demands of the “health care reform bill”. Second, taking over auto industries (owning majority interest means you are the owner) and demanding xyz people fired/retained/hired. Which Obama did.

“Finally, your first amendment rights relate only to government power, not to private parties. Your boss can fire you for political comments with impunity. ”

Quite true. This is not a 1st amendment violation, clearly.

“It is unbelievable that conservatives who claim to defend the Constitution do not even know what it says.”

It’s rather unbelievable that somebody wishes to make a blanket statement about a swath of people where no actual consensus of opinion exists.

Agreed. Geico fired someone else for a political rant against the tea party, so you can’t fairly say that they are baised toward the left. They probably don’t want to anger any of their customers, left or right.
As for Obabma being a socialist – I have never heard him proclaim himself a socialist, but his writings, his words, and his actions do indicate that he has a socialist/marxist world view. But since socialist has been somewhat of a dirty word since the middle of the century, most people wouldn’t self-identify that way.

Of Obama, Ermey said he was “a little wary at first” on how he would handle the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not now, though.

“I think our president is doing a commendable job,” he said. “He picked up where George Bush left off. … We’re continuing to take care of the terrorist situation.”

Read the rest of the article at the link below, where he admits he’s a “middle of the road guy”. Talk about mamby pamby… I think the best part of him ran down his mother’s leg and ended up as a wet spot on the mattress. Ermey pissed off a whole segment of a political group, which numbers-wise may be more than those who liked what Ermey said. In those numbers, there are many powerful peeps, who undoubtedly are calling Geico to roll Ermey’s head on a platter. That’s the bottom line.

How much money is enough that you made off of us? How much money will be enough to put before your conscience? Ermey you just shot yourself in the foot because we know the real Gunny feels this way to back pedal is bowing to Hollywood/Corp America pressure!

The very definition of “American Exceptionalism” is that men and women stand together with great conviction for what is honest, true, honorable, and worthy of sacrifice. This is what has always made America a great nation. I whole-heartedly agree that Americans must not compromise on truth and honor. If something is broken in America, let us fix it the right way. That is why we were founded as a “Nation for the people, by the people, and of the people”. If toes get stepped on, so be it…..better that than to lose our self-respect for ourselves and our country…..

I don’t think the apology had anything to do with Geico, I think it came from the Marines and Toys for Tots. It is really not appropriate to malign the President/Commnder in Cheif at this type of fund raising event. RL knew it, knows it and is Marine enough to admit it. If I had a buck for every stupid thing I uttered, I might be able to retire by now. Apology accepted now get back out there and give them hell Ermey, Oorah from a former Marine.

Your looking at this the wrong way and its harder to see if you have not actually served in the Armed Forces, understand the culture of respect for authority all the way up the chain. Gunny’s criticism is his own but he is a famous Former Marine personality and that carrys weight right over to the actual Marines serving under orders by this president. Gunny realizing this blurring of the lines apologizes for this reason alone. He based it on Emotional outburst (thats the clever part) because this is what ******** do and then they never apologize. So he in my opinion has created a real win-win by setting the example of apologizing for his emotional outburst against the president and showing the Marines what he said was out of line. This applys also to the other Armed services of course. I think this makes him a bigger man not lesser in my eyes and I hope other can see the beauty of the art of making an apology. You never see this done on the left. Esp when they constantly had emotional outbursts backed with hate and misinformation regarding Bush.

For the sake of the program he did the right thing and he knows that the Marine Corps falls under the president and no tolerance of disrespect should be warranted towards their president regardless if he is a douchebag. The Marine Corps will be here long after BO is dead and gone and God Bless that! If you want something talked about and deliberated over forever, talk to a Congressman, if you want it fixed and done the right way, WATCH a Marine.
