Famous Evangelical to Weiner: Try Christianity

A Tweet sent by one of America’s most well-known evangelicals has ignited some controversy. Two days ago, Albert Mohler, the president Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, sent the following Twitter message out to his followers:

Why is this causing a ruckus, you ask? Rep. Anthony Weiner is Jewish and Mohler’s message clearly indicates his belief that the congressman needs Jesus Christ to forgive his sins (embracing Christ as savior would be a direct contradiction to Jewish teaching).

Mohler took to his blog to defend his Tweet, writing: “There is no shortage of perplexing realities in our world today, but counted among them must be the fact that many rather well informed people seem to be shocked that Christians believe the doctrines of Christianity.” He continues:

As far as I know, Rep. Weiner is not among my “followers” on Twitter. I did not assume that he was reading my posting. My message was mostly directed at my fellow Christians as a reminder of this very concern — that the American impulse is to seek treatment when our real need is for redemption.

This is a basic and central Christian belief. The Bible reveals that our need is not to find a way to make ourselves well — which we can never do — but to realize that we are sinners in need of a Savior. The Christian Gospel is the message of redemption accomplished by the Lord Jesus Christ and the salvation that is found in him and in him alone.

The very essence of biblical Christianity is the knowledge that the real human problem is sin — not sickness — and that the only rescue is that which comes through faith in Jesus Christ.

While Mohler’s comments may be seen as offensive, in his defense his Tweet does not mention Weiner’s faith; instead, it seems to concentrate more on the nature of human sin.

The Christian Post, though, claims that Mohler may have made some disparaging comments about Judaism in the past. According to the Post, “In 2003, Mohler had reportedly said Judaism was like a tumor that needed to be removed. Some churches do not agree with Mohler’s view on Judaism.”

Regardless of Mohler’s past statements, do you believe his Tweet to be worthy of such controversy?

    @jzs I don’t see that declaring Christ as your Savior has ever been an innoculation against “sin.” Who would know better than Evangelists who weekly profess their love of Christ, if not more often. Jim Baker (fraud), Haggard (drug use, same sex escapades) and etc.

    As a person who has declared and accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior I can say without a doubt that just because you SAY you are a Christian doesn’t mean you truely ARE a Christian. Christians have and do still sin. The difference is that we strive NOT to sin and Christ has taken our sin from us. We are in a continual war with satan and we don’t always do the right thing. I believe you can tell Christians by their actions, even when we mess up. We (Christians) TRY always to do as the Lord instructs us and He is there to catch us when we fail .Romans 3:23-24 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Jesus Christ.” There have been alot of evangelists who have fallen greatly. That is between them and the Lord and I try not to judge. Also I can say CATEGORICALLY that Christ is neither conservative nor republican. He is LORD. That, to me, is one of the differences.     Since when is genuine concern and love offensive? Since it mentions Jesus as Savior not as a swear word.

    Any Christian worth the calling will offer to introduce a sinner in need of redemption to Jesus whose Blood covers all sins and remakes a broken life into a living example of God’s love and grace.

    @Littlemuddy – Yeshua was NOT talking to ALL the JEWS as a nation. He was talking to the Pharisees! Read chapter 23 in its entirty and not just a verse or two. As for John 14, you are correct. Noone comes to the Father but thru Yeshua.

      Fist off there will be an awakening and many JEWS will come to believe in Yeshua. Second the Gentiles are “grafted in” to the “Olive Tree” Israel. Third the 10 Tribes of the North were removed from Israel and DID NOT RETURN. They are “among the nations.” They became the Gentiles. The House of Judea DID return and they are the ones we call “The Jews.” It is written that YHWH will remarry his Bride after devorcing her (Northern Tribes of Israel.)

      According to Romans 11 the true Olive Tree is Jesus Christ. The natural branches are the Jews and us Gentiles are the wild branches which have been grafted in. The Jews are never to become the olive tree, but some branches which trust in Christ and become part of his called out assembly will be put back into the tree. Not as Jews, but as believers in Jesus Christ.
      But, getting down to the reality of the truth it’s those who overcome the powers of darkness and walk in the light of Jesus Christ who will be those who reign in the Kingdom. There is neither Jew nor Gentile there, Bond or free, male of female. Only those who have overcome by the power of His blood and the word of their testimony will rule and reign with Christ. We will be His Sons and He will be our God. Standing before the judgement and claiming heritage, name or birthright won’t cut it.
      Many are called, both Jew and Gentile but few are chosen because the chosen are the overcomers. Very few overcome to the place where Jesus Christ is totally reproduced in them.

      That’s because they never bothered with following Jesus. They followed their own lusts and passions, using Jesus to cover their tracks or as bait for their next victim.

      Without coming to terms with their sins and turning to face God, they have no chance of entering the Gates of Heaven. Jesus told us that many may call out “Lord, Lord” but having denied Him in practice and faith will be denied before the Judgment Seat later.

      Then are you saying that salvation comes thru works(good)? If one goes thru his whole life doing good works I believe He would have no standing before God. Remember we’re told our works are as filthy rags, Gods words not mine! We are saved thru the shed blood of Jesus Christ and He is the only way I have any standing before God Almighty!

      HUT Please read my post again. I did NOT say that we are “SAVED BY WORKS”. I said that we WILL BE JUDGED for our works. Ever read that part where you will be the “Least or Greatest” in heaven? You cannot just “Get saved” and that’s it. There IS more to it. Most people are taught in church that you are done after that. NO! Yeshua nor Sheul (Paul) NEVER taught that the commandments were done away with as many in the church preach. Works WILL NOT save your soul, but it will Establish where you will be in the Kingdom of Heaven and Yeshua and YHWH WANTS us to be counted as the MOST IN HEAVEN.

      Maybe I misunderstood where you were coming from. While faith in Christ is a get out of hell card! After we are washed by the blood of the Lamb we should act Christ like , which is tough to do. We as sinners saved by the Grace of God, and are free from the punishment of sin(eternal damnation).we are still sinners! We don’t get free reign to sin as we want without consequences. God will not stand for that, but we are still saved from eternal punishment. “To him that He loves He chasens” (spelled wrong) I hope You and I are on the same page, and no offense was intended.

    @Totally Domestic – The preacher is NOT right. It is NOT “just the Christian Scriptures” and YHWHdid NOT change His mind and choose the Christians OVER HIS CHOSEN PEOPLE! I get a kick out of seeing him say Weiner is not one of “MY FOLLOWERS.” We are to be FOLLOWERS OF YESHUA (JESUS). It is also NOT the “CHRISTIAN BIBLE.” This guy teaches Replacement Theology and NOT the true Gosples as YHWH wants us to. We are to accept Yeshua into our hearts and he will forgive us our sins, but we are to “sin no more.” You are to continue to follow the COMMANDMENTS of YHWH. Weiner DOES need Yeshua as his Savior.       When Christ declared the temple desolate in Matthew 23:38 God was finised with Israel. They ceased being God’s chosen people and Jesus declared Himself that no one would get to the Father but by Him. (John 14:6)
      He then placed His name on His disciples and through them we who believe today are the Holy Nation.

      You are correct in that the NT does not offer replacement theology.

      We Christians are adopted — grafted in — to the Chosen People. For those who think otherwise, I commend Paul’s letters, esp Romans.

      Were it not for the Jews, there would be no Christians. Perhaps this is why Jews are hated by those who hate them and Christians. We share the call of God to be a light to the nations, a call to do an about face and come to terms with the reality of sin and its consequences.

      The Jews are God’s choosen people – but the Church (Christians) are the Bride of Christ. We do not live under the laws of the old testament (judgement) we live under the saving GRACE of the Death, Burial, Resurection of JESUS CHRIST. We as Christians have the joy of being filled with the HOLY SPIRIT at the time of our salvation. The Trinity is “God the Father”, “God the Son”, and “God the Holy Spirit”. This is the GOOD NEWS of the New Testament. It is God’s desire that all should be saved, but many deny Him and will be punished because of that denial! TRUTH IS TRUTH – LEARN IT!

      Dear Soul and Fellow Traveler — I went to seminary, even the one that Dr Mohler now heads. I was NEVER taught replacement theology or to hate the Jews.

      I was taught to love the Jews, for thru their witness comes my new life in Messiah Jesus. Without them, I would be a pagan, not of the “Thirteenth Tribe.”

      I’ve heard that “get out of jail free card” analogy before. Everyone likes Monopoly, but salvation is not played like Monopoly. Even those possessed of devils knew of Christ and believed he was the Son of God and Savior of man. Salvation is through Christ, but Christianity is not a religion of mere lip service. One must believe and obey. Now here’s where Evangelicals cringe and say, “We’re saved by faith, not works!” Yes, it is the saving grace of Christ that saves us, but after all we can do. We give it our all, with steadfast faith in Christ, and He makes up the difference for what we could never achieve on our own best efforts. Too many are looking for convenient Christianity, drive thru salvation, and “get out of jail free cards”. While we cannot earn our salvation independently, we are expected to add obedience to our faith and “work out our own salvation with fear and trembling.”

      And our works show that God is alive and working in and thru us. See the short letter of James. Works are a byproduct of the Spirit of Christ living in us. When our works are out of synch (sin) w/that Holy Spirit, then that shows like Swaggart, et al. The Spirit calls us to make an about-face, turnaround, repent. Salvation remains alive unless the sinner refuses to turn back to God — one way to grieve the Holy Spirit.

      The principal grieving of the Holy Spirit is to say that Jesus is not of the essence of God, yet in the flesh and one of us, every bit as much as being of God. This is the unpardonable sin.

      Dr Mohler is correct to call Anthony to turn back to God in Jesus. In Jesus, God is accessible. In Jesus, God says in effect — not to be afraid, come and sit w/Me, for I love you greatly! This applies for all sinners, not just Jewish or Christian or Muslim ones.

    I heard it said once that”When you shed the light of truth, people won’t like you.” Weiner’s Jewish heritage and faith does not absolve him of the sin that he committed. As a member of the minority that it is acceptable to discriminate against, as a die hard follower of Christ Jesus I will not step aside and pretend that my belief is inferior to other beliefs. I applaud Mohler for speaking the truth and not backing down to political correctness and persecution. Oh, and that word I said…“truth”, that’s not a typo. I meant every word. Repent Rep.       LOL — Jesus a socialist? What a joker you are! He told one young man who was consumed by “stuff” to let it go and follow Him. That does not make Jesus a socialist.

      That God tells us not to STEAL says that He permits us to have personal possessions. That He tells us not to COVET tells us that He expects us to be content w/our own personal possessions. Manna and quail w/water were provided to the Israelites transiting the wilderness on their way home to the Promised Land. That Jesus says “…give us today our daily bread…” tells us that He will provide when we offer our trust in His provision.

      The early church shared out of their abundance to meet the needs of those who lacked. It was voluntary not compelled. Socialism compels the middle class to give what they have to the poor while the powerful share nothing but their contempt for the ruled.

      Jason Kidd exemplifies facing your demons and getting your life back in order when “everyone” says you suck. It’s not all that big of a deal when you FALL. It’s how quickly you get up and what is right makes a huge difference in your recovery.

      If I were you, I wouldn’t be so sure you understand the Word of God and that I, or that anyone who doesn’t agree with you does not. Specifically, if you think the words of Christ were those of a conservative, perhaps you could post a few of them here. Check Psalms first if you need a little help.

      Ironically, Ron, many of those listed are true Christians. They were tempted by the Devil, sinned, asked for forgivness, and according to them, were forgiven for their transgressions. They defeated Satan, regained their flocks, and are now shining examples of the power of the Lord.

      (embracing Christ as savior would be a direct contradiction to Jewish teaching) Really? Isn’t Christ the Greek word for Messiah? They believe the Messiah is a savior don’t they? …that makes no sense. I think he meant “embracing Jesus as the Messiah”….could be wrong.

      Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one finds his way to God except through Jesus Christ. Weiner may claim to follow the Talmud, but the Talmud cannot save him. Only a faith in the sovereignty and deity of Jesus will save you. Jesus is God, not some exalted spirit brother of Lucifer. It matters what you believe about Jesus.

      Don’t be silly, Weiner is not even a real Jew. He was raised by a secular Jewish mother, he married a Muslim, I‘d be shocked if he’s even read the Torah, much less the Talmud. In fact, the Talmud would not agree with his actions, in Judaism there’s divorce you know.
