Fan Dies After Falling From Stands at Rangers Game

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers say a fan died after falling out of the stands while trying to catch a baseball tossed his way during the game.

Rangers president Nolan Ryan said after Thursday night’s game that the team was “deeply saddened” to learn that the man “has passed away as a result of this tragic accident.”

The Rangers did not identify the man; they said he fell about 20 feet.

The fan fell head-first and landed behind a 14-foot-high wall supporting a video board that shows replays and scores from other games.

The accident happened in the second inning after Oakland’s Conor Jackson hit a foul ball that ricocheted into left field. Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton retrieved the ball and tossed it into the stands.

Replays on Oakland’s television broadcast show the man reaching for the ball and apparently catching it before tumbling.

My condolenses to the family and this has to be tough for Hamilton. Hopefully he can avoid going back to his darkside because this was a freak accident, it’s not his fault at all it just happened.

It had to be in front of his kid. I mean it is such a stupid, tragic, way to go. For one lousy baseball. Give me a break. Cripes what can one say?

He reached over a little kid and another man to get that ball. Sorry he died, but come on. That’s not a knee jerked reaction, that’s an example of greed and stupidity…

Yes I agree, greed and stupidity. The ball was tossed to the older guy who had a glove on! This guy reached over his kid and in front of the guy with the glove to catch it. (Was it his father- the kids grandfather?) I feel sorry for the kid, dad takes him to a ball game and never takes him home. What a nightmare- he won’t be a Rangers fan anymore for sure. Poor mom must have had to come to the park or hospital to pick him up if the cops did not bring him home. So sad all around.

@Aaron in polk, Get a life, you are pathetic. Someone just died, and his son had to witness this. He was/is a hero in his community, he was a firefighter. Why do you have to bring up Bush? And for your information, if you can use google or yahoo, you can see who the owners of any team are, it’s not really that hard. I don’t know if that was your attempt at humor, but it just wasn’t funny.

Isn’t G.W.Bush an owner of the Texas Rangers?

I bet it was his fault. Part of the War on Terrrer (G.W.Bush voice).

Weird… This guy and the guy that fell last year were both firefighters. Maybe because they’re fearless?

I don’t think we need to be saying anything bad about this man, let alone calling him dumb. It was a reflex to catch it, and a split second mistake. It’s sad it cost him his life but anyone in that position would have tried to catch that ball. It’s not like he jumped off after it. Obviously he slipped when he went for it, so don’t call him stupid. A reflex is all it was. Condolences and prayers should go out for him and his family not stupidity remarks. RIP Texas fan…..

I feel sorry for the family and the announcer mocking him and laughing before knowing what happened probably didn’t help them in their pain but damnnnnnn!!!

When will adults in this country start being adults again? He had to know that crevice was right there and to be so stupid over a baseball is just ignorant for anyone to do.

This is the second time this has happened recently, and the next thing they’ll be installing human safety nets…..with all the learning tech and things available to humans today, why do Americans appear to be getting dumber and dumber?

It’s downright frightening and makes you wonder how half these people got to be old enough to be adults in the world today. :( RIP buddy

Nice eulogy. You comment on the announcer laughing while not knowing what happened, yet you mock the poor man who fell and you know died with your stupid comment. You act like those “nose up in the air” progressives that you so despise. I guess the world would be so much safer if we all acted like you…and it would be much darker too! Check yourself.

Very sad and tragic but much like the whole country a little common sense is needed. A guy dropped his little daughter earlier in the year trying for a foul ball. Let’s use some common sense before big brother bans us from ball games.
