Fans Angry After ABC Picks Transexual Chaz Bono for ‘Dancing With the Stars’

Viewers Angry Over Chaz Bonos Inclusion on Dancing With the Stars

Some “Dancing With the Stars” (DWTS) fans are enraged over the inclusion of Chaz Bono as a cast member on the 13th season of the popular prime-time show. Bono, the only child of the famed Sonny and Cher, was born a woman, but decided to change genders last year. Aside from featuring Bono on the program, ABC has also decided to pair him with a female dancer.

Business Insider claims that Bono’s placement on the show makes him “one of the highest-profile transgendered people in the world.” Already, angry fans have flooded ABC’s announcement page with their concerns, frustrations and worries. One person wrote, “this will not be a family show any longer,” while another quipped, “I just don’t want that lifestyle choice continually flaunted in the media.”

There were a mix of comments, of course, with some individuals supporting Bono. Some opponents of the decision to include him claim they’ll be boycotting the show. Below, see one of the comments that highlight captures this sentiment:

But here’s another, more supportive comment regarding ABC’s decision to include him:

Viewers Angry Over Chaz Bonos Inclusion on Dancing With the Stars

The network’s message board has essentially become a politically-charged arena for discussion about Bono and gender reassignment. But beyond the discussion that’s been spawned, the show could reveal some intriguing patterns about America’s collective attitude toward transgendered peoples.

If Bono is voted off quickly — or kept on despite terrible dance performance — then the nation’s majority opinion may become clear. Because the show is based upon audience votes, the end result may shed light on citizens’ views about the transgendered. Business Insider has more about the political discussions that are already unraveling:

Bono’s casting is only the latest to make a lighthearted reality show the impetus for deeper discussions about values, tolerance, bigotry and politics. Gay “American Idol” contestants have opted not to announce their sexuality, perhaps out of concerns about alienating intolerant viewers. And Bristol Palin’s “Dancing” casting two seasons ago seemed to have influenced voters with opinions on her mother’s politics.

Of course, gay rights groups are praising the network’s decision. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation released a statement praising ABC, saying that Bono and Carson Kressley’s (the former “Queer Eye” star is also dancing on this season of the show) inclusion has ”created primetime firsts that reflect the growing acceptance of gay and transgender people in America today.”

Despite the controversial nature of Bono’s inclusion, some believe that this is an opportunity to have a national discussion about an extremely difficult subject. While the decision to cast him is certainly a disputed one, there’s no telling how it will impact ratings.

In the end, some people opposed to the decision will boycott the show, while others who are intrigued and excited by the prospect of a transgendered person coming on board may watch for the first time.

They are trying to recapture the magic of Bristol Palin, getting the audience to vote for reasons of their own.

Miss Palin was advanced by the TEA Party, above and beyond her stage skills.

Whatever it was, it caused great ratings. ABC is just doing this to get ratings.

While I agree that the Bible is VERY CLEAR about a homosexual lifestyle – a PRACTICING ONE, this is still a FREE country and still a CAPITALIST country, for now. Therefore, let ABC put on whomever they want and watch where the cards fall. I doubt it will be in their favor. However, because I have absolutely NO interest in ABC, NBC, or CBS BECAUSE they are MORALLY CORRUPT big-time, I would not watch it out of curiosity or for any other reason and neither should any other family-oriented, moral person in America. AND, if you do watch it, AFTER KNOWING ALL THIS, then I do believe you will answer for it in some way down the road, rather through your own moral downgrade, or when you face the Almighty some day. FEAR OF THE LORD is what keeps me straight, along with my trust and love in Him. So, if Hollywood and all its filth is what you seek or are curious about, go right ahead. I WILL NOT JUDGE YOU. God will. BUT, if you allow these networks high ratings when they put on this stuff, THEN YES, YOU HAVE ADDED TO THE DEGRADATION OF THE MORAL FABRIC OF OUR COUNTRY. Ms/Mr. Bono should not flaunt herself. SHE MADE A PERSONAL DECISION to change her gender, something I KNOW God would not approve of for any reason. Sex seems to be the center of the universe in this decade and that is what the devil is counting on. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU. Just do NOT watch it, or pay the consequences. Don’t judge – MOVE ON. Stop giving out 15 min of fame to these idiots.

Actually, I feel bad for Chaz. No matter what happens, it won‘t be because of however good he was or wasn’t. It’ll be a political statement. Think about it. If Chaz does well, it will be because the transgendered population voted for him. If he does poorly, it’s because the TEA party or the Vast Right Wing Conspriracy voted against him.

Coming out the of the gate, he’s already got about five hurdles to clear – two famous parents, body weight, wide spread knowledge about the sexual identity operation and people who just want to see him fail. The training is really hard and demanding. Ask any dancer. It could be the making of him as his own person.

I think that agameofthrones was right. It’s a TV show, they are exploiting Chaz and I probably won’t be watching, unless a clip makes its way to YouTube.

      @Blackop

How about a little Bible to back up your statement?
      1 Corinthians 6:2
Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?

People use the old “judge not” out of place and out of context. Christians are to use the Bible, and be able to judge that which is wrong and right. We will be judged by the same standard that we judge others. So many people use this wrong, and act as if we are to turn a blind eye to evil. That is not the case.

Actually homosexuals and transgender people are victims of the progressive movement. Homosexuals are obviously mentally ill people who are in need of being educated about the Truth but they have been turned into a civil rights issue. They end up suffering because of what their actions cause but no one is able to help them by telling them the Truth.

BlackOp – while it is true that a Christian does not judge others, it is our responsibility as Christians to preach a godly lifestyle, and help guide the way to salvation. There is a distinction between preaching and pointing, which I think is a hidden message in your post.

Flaunting this lifestyle in the media to families and children is not harmonious to that end. Quite the contrary.

What gets me the most about situations like this are the fact that the gay, lesbian, transgender-ed lifestyle is being thrown up in our faces on ALL of the “major” networks in almost every new show. Where as before there was a gay character once in a while, it is now becoming the norm to have a gay role(or more than one)in said new programming. I maybe old fashioned, but I get nauseated watching two girls, or even two guys making out and cooing to each other! It’s just not right, in my opinion!

ABC’s problem is not just with the inclusion of Bono. The entire list of “stars” for this season is a bust. In addition to Bono, they have a thug basketball player and the rest are “C-list” celebrities, all of whom reflect the extreme liberal bias of the media. In the end, ONEYEJACK is correct when he posts the quote from Isaiah: Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness… Isaiah 5:20

Another instance of the liberal left TV networks trying to cram down the throats of the American public the idea that lesbian, transgender, homosexual lifestyle is “normal” when it is not. When those people, including Chaz, stand before Almighty God he/she will understand why it is wrong. Then liberal media won’t have loudmouthed, violent
radicals to stand behind for their poor broadcasting choices.

I can easily see her advancing far on the show, as the votes she will get will come from those watching, and many pro-transgenderism will watch for that very reason. There will be a high percentage of people predisposed toward her regardless of her ability. But that will say nothing about the population in general. If a show is gay friendly one should not be suprised that a higher percentage of gays and gay supporting people watch it than is reflected in the national average. It would be like taking a poll from a show on MTV about drug legalization and extrapolating that to the nation.

The sad thing is that the vast majority of “transgendered” people in this country did not have a say in becoming what they are. One in ten thousand births are deemed “gender ambiguous” usually meaning a baby not having fully developed “equipment.” Most of these are little boys, who doctors routinely castrate and proscribe female hormones, thinking they will somehow grow up to be women. The practice is barbaric yet accepted in the medical community.

It’s a TV show. They can put anyone on they want. That’s their right. Maybe it’s to see if people will watch out of curiousity. Maybe they were looking for the next NEW thing, and somebody thought, “Hey, we haven’t had a transgendered person on yet. Let’s do that!” I’m pretty sure it was all about how to boost ratings and bring in the money.
If we don’t like their decision, we won’t watch it. If ratings go down, they won’t do it again. It’s all about the money in Hollywood. It’s never about the audience or doing the right thing.
So if you don’t like this decision, be sure to let them know you are not watching, and why. They will listen because their ears are in their wallets!
      I’m not watching.

Why does this “JennLindstrom” persist in calling Chastity/Chaz Bono “him”? Bono has not changed her chromosomes. She’s still female. Nevermind that a surgeon cut away on her to give the her outward appearance of someone resembling a man. Nevermind that a programme of hormones was initiated to reduce estrogen and raise testosterone. Bono is still genetically a woman. It will never change. What Bono is, is screwed up. ABC is doing this deliberately. They’re trying to make a social statement as well as create sensationalism. I believe their viewership will plummet until Bono is expelled from the show.

Chastity Bono clearly suffers from a mental disorder. First she mutilated her body due to it, now she is hiding behind an extra 100 pounds of fat. Frankly, with Cher as her mother it’s probably understandable, but this woman needs some serious counseling.

What I find cruel is the people who cheer her decision to alter her body. If they cared for her at all they would have helped her get the therapy she needs, not hurt herself further.

We are a nation of sissies living our lives in lies and excuses because nobody can look at themselves and face their own demons. It’s always something/someone else’s fault.

So I find it interesting that the cultural mores of different religous groups don’t acknowledge, their own dance preferences; jews: men with men, women with women (religious custom) Islamist no dancing; unless your local cultural development allows belly dancers, several women dancing for men. And then you have the Sufi whirling Dervishes, mostly only men dancing together. An we all know why the Baptist don’t dance. But this program is secular, I didn’t hear of it being produced Pope, Mormon Elders, Pat Robertson, Oral Roberts, Billy Graham, et al. So as far as earlier contestants adding up to talented selections well HASSELHOF WASN’T physically up to the task. But crystal Palin low level amature. Chosen bassed on political points, while cynic outlook wished to see how far money would go to supplant conscience, expert judgement, moral behavior vs. deluded self interest. For all you so called “Righteosly Indignant” fans keep to your promises and don’t watch. In fact that you watch such a program is evidence of your pruient interest sexually provocative clothing and moves. While others actually view these displays as watching a gymnastic or diving compettion. The effort and execution of the participants will exhibit the tremedous dificulty of paired dancing, and flawless coordination the pair must possess. I hope I see the next Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, or Ginger Rogers.

Child Pornography is next on their Plate. They want it accepted as well as Adult / Child Sex. How is such a fat person going to dance without having a heart attack? What would her father say? He was a Republican, too. When Oprah asked her about the most intimate mechanical details of her/his sex life with/without anatomy, I thought I was in a sex ed class in the twilight zone. Really disturbing. Is this transformation merely due to not getting enough fame? I acknowledge there are folks who hate their gender. But this hermaphrodite is ruining her health with obesity, the “number 1 issue” in the US

Given ABC’s recent decisions, including the banning of American flag lapel pins, and the fact that none of this season’s DWTS contestants are really stars, I’d say ABC is going to have to make some changes soon, or slip further into obscurity.

I didn’t know chastity became chaz…..when did this happen? Is this person going to be dancing as a man, or as a woman? I don’t see any advantage she/he would have, so why not? At least she/he’s not a lesbian, had the courage to have the surgery. If no one mentioned it, since it’s not a cross dresser, but actually had the surgery, who would know?

If someone feels like they‘re a man trapped in a woman’s body, but does nothing about it, just dates women, then I’m against it. Not the person, but their lifestyle. If they get the sex change and become a functioning male, and I’m not even interested in HOW they do that (sorry, gotta scrub that image out of my mind), and date women, they’re of the opposite gender. Yes, if you consider the technical terms gender and sex are different. I’m not sure if I have them right, but I know they’re different. Now, if she became he, and then dated men, that would be wrong. I don’t want to go tell someone not to have a sex change, because I don‘t want them telling me I can or can’t get my tubes tied, or get a mastectomy if needed, etc. If they try to use it to their advantage, like a man becoming a woman and playing tennis (sorry, forgot her name), it’s going into a grey area. Men are usually stronger than women.

Chaz has not had the surgery to change from a woman to a man. All that has been done is a double mastectomy and testosterone shots. According to the show that was done about Chaz on Oprah’s network the last surgery may or may not be done. Who knows.

I get confused by the termonology….change genders doesn’t mean they had the surgery? It just means they’re dressing like the other sex and doing superficial things to change it? That would be different than. I know most doctors require you to “live” as the other gender to make sure it’s what you want. I did hear of a man who felt like a woman trapped in a male body, got changed into a woman surgically, then dated women. That’s just wrong.

Just another example of Network TV taking it upon themselves to make a political statement. I have no problem with Chaz or what anyone else chooses to do in their personal life. Where it is bothersome, is where some politically correct/incorrect 20 something executive wannabe decides what they think I should accept as entertainment. It almost sounds like a desperate move on ABC’s part. Not a smart move by an over the top (aren’t they all?) Network. Good luck Chaz, sorry ABC has chosen to exploit you.

It is sad that so many people in the world today are unhappy with themselves and don’t know what to do about it and find this as a way to make themselves notorious. I guess if that is the only way to get attention? I won’t be watching. Have in the past, but this kind of thing is what makes me lose interest. Same thing for watching women or men having romantic relationships with each other. No interest in watching that.
