Fareed Zakaria Defends Romney on ‘Very Poor’ Comment: ‘The Guy Can’t Get a Break’

Many have commented that Mitt Romney’s strength as a candidate for president is not his performance in sit-down interviews. This inability was on display during his interview with CNN‘s Soledad O’Brien last week. Romney has received much criticism for saying in the interview that he was “not concerned about the very poor.”
Those six words have added to the image held by some that Romney is out of touch with the plight of the middle-class and those in poverty. However, the rest of Romney’s much maligned sentence makes clear that the former Massachusetts governor was not advocating a policy that would explicitly leave out Americans in the most dire financial need.
“I’m in this race because I care about Americans. I’m not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I’ll fix it,” Romney said Wednesday.
In an appearance with Sean Hannity Thursday, Romney said he “misspoke” and clarified that he is worried about all Americans.
Fareed Zakaria came to Romney’s defense during his show on CNN Sunday, criticizing those in the media who have lambasted the Republican candidate for president over a comment that has been taken completely out of context:
“What I noticed though, we talk about the gaffes in the debates and the campaign. The one gaffe, Romney has this new gaffe of, you know, the comment about the poor. I feel as though in some ways the guy can’t get a break because if you look at the previous gaffe where he talked about ‘I like to fire people,’ he wasn’t talking about firing people. He was talking about firing insurance companies, and that’s absolutely clear.
And here he says, ‘I’m not so concerned about the poor, they have a safety net, if it has holes I’ll repair it.’ I feel as though the media here have sort of said, ‘Yes, yes, but if we take this entirely out of context, it really sounds like he’s being very mean to the poor.’ It just feels like, ‘Yeah, but you just took it entirely out of context.’”
Noel Sheppard of NewsBusters notes that while Zakaria’s analysis may be refreshing to conservatives, he could do one better by calling out his colleagues at CNN who first negatively suggested that Romney meant to say he wasn’t “concerned about the very poor.”
“Interesting observation considering the anchor in the middle of this firestorm, CNN‘s Soledad O’Brien, received congratulations for her interview from two different CNN contributors on the air with one actually giving her a high five.
While Zakaria was pointing out the hypocrisy here, he might have scolded folks on his own network for their part in not only taking Romney ‘entirely out of context,’ but also spreading the misinformation as far as they possibly could.”

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 8:32amSince the Constitution is based on the Bible, then it would behoove evangelical Christians to support the candidate whose political philosophy most closely lines up with the Constitution.
The reason why many evangelicals do not support Ron Paul is simply that they are uninformed as to the other candidates’ unconstitutional or even socialistic record on some issues, and have not listened to Ron Paul. Furthermore, like sheep, they follow the crowd, such as the group of 150 evangelical leaders who steered them toward a ‘moderate’ candidate, which some might call an unconstitutional contender (Romney/Santorum/Gingrich).

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 11:41amWhat is most amazing is the fact that even the so called conservatives fail to pick up on the fact that this so called “safety net” has no constitutional basis.
I suppose the reason for this is ALL of the candidates with the exception of Dr. Paul have no clue regarding the powers vested to the Feds as defined by the constitution.
What you all should be asking yourselves is… just why Gingrich and Santorum are not clearly stating this simple fact.
Gingrich, Santorum, and Romney are all blinded by a progressive ideology.

Good luck with that happening.

I am praying that SOMEONE emerge out of this pack of junior varsity wanna-bes and challenge Obama. None can beat him the way it looks, what with the MSM in the TANK for him, the takers out-stripping the non-takers, and class envy heightened. It is the worst case scenario – for this country’s future.
In 2012, the election will be about the stupid & gullible (Obama voters) vs. the smart and independents – and there’s not enough of them.
It will lead to civil war. Which, we probably need to do; cleanse the country again. Thin the herd.

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 2:37amThe American voters are not dumb. It is very obvious that no presidential candidate, even, MITT ROMNEY would mean it the way it was spoken.
All Romney has to do is explain what he really meant. I’m sure, the American voters already have an inkling that it was deliberately taken out of context to smear him. What do you expect, it is plain POLITICS.
Those who attack him using ROMNEY’S own words, PRETEND TO BE DUMB. They pretend they do not know what he really meant, but in reality, they know full well. Romney’s attackers aim is to DECEIVE the American voters….. but who are they fooling? These are the very people that you cannot trust with the TRUTH.

Romney is saying ‘we have’ a safety, not that he is going to create one. You have to work with the cards that you are dealt, you cannot pretend they don’t exist. You think Mr. Paul would go in and just cancel all those programs? Not.
Romney is right to focus on the middle class, you fix that you fix the country, the poor shrink and move into the middle class, some in the middle class move up because they aspire to do it.
this is just the liberal smear trying to kill capitalism/free market and Mr. Newt is in full motion helping them.

No, he is saying the safety net is already there for the poor. Even Ron Paul does not talk about eliminating the safety net for the poor, and the things he talks about eliminating, he says he will do it gradually and not “cold turkey”.
There should be a safety net for the widow, the fatherless, and the wounded soldier who has sacrificed for his country. However, every able-bodied man should ultimately be responsible for his own welfare and the welfare of his family. If he needs help, he should be able to turn to family, friends, and church for help, and the help should be given in a way that promotes self-reliance and not dependance on others. If Mitt Romney is anything like most LDS that I know, then those are the welfare principles he subscribes to as well.

You folks apparently didn’t understand what Romney actually said, as here is the direct quote.
“I’m not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs a repair, I’ll fix it.
Notice he said he’d “fix” it if it needs a “repair”?
This clearly means he does not get it, as the only fix is to eliminate it as nowhere in the constitution does it give the Feds the power to provide for the poor. If you think the constitution does…where do you find such powers?
Here’s an excellent short story as told by Davy Crockett that speaks the truth about the welfare state in regards to the constitution.
Please read this and then see if you both feel the same…

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 8:22pmAmen people! I have been saying all along that the average American will never vote for someone who on day one in office will totally slash and burn the existing structure. This whole ‘safety net’ argument regarding its constitutionality is moot. It is already there, and has been for ages. We all know that some of the entitlement programs need to go. But there is no feasible way to toss them out the window immediately. The approach has to be measured and reasonable, kind of like weaning a baby. So the whole ‘Romney or Newt want to keep entitlements therefore they are not viable candidates and not true conservatives’ is a pathetic, emotionally driven argument with little basis in fact or reason. You want a true revolution? Cut off medicare, food stamps, and medicaid completely all at once. Then you better cling to your guns and religion because hell will be unleashed. Slowly and intelligently defund them and promote alternatives like workfare, etc. and this big boat can be turned around. Ultra right-wing talking points make for a great emotional show, but will do little in reality to improve our situation.

When have you ever heard Romney, Gingrich, or Santorum explain the fact that the constitution does not provide for a welfare state? If this is not a fact, please quote the section of the constitution that allows for one.
What those like myself advocate is for a candidate with the wisdom to tell people that powers such as this belong to the STATES. If this was no longer a Federal issue several things would happen. First off a HUGE bureaucracy that gobbles up a large portion of the funds would no longer have their useless chunk of the pie. Second , we could actually start working on balancing the budget once the Feds have established this as beyond their powers.
For years now people like you have said the same thing…and NOTHING has changed. The RINO‘s running the party will never take this issue on and it’s the only hope we have to save the Republic.
What you obviously do not grasp is the fact that both Newt and Romney are ADMITTED progressives, and given this fact they actually think the Feds should be involved in the welfare state.
What part of this escapes you…or do you not believe them when they come right out and admit it?
As long as you are willing to vote for people like that…we as a nation are doomed. We are simply continuing to pass the buck to our children and grandchildren, and now…we are running out of THEIR money.
You are only fooling yourself if you think someone like Romney can fix what his kind…have created.

It is not that liberals and the MSM like Romney. Fareed was simply being intellectually honest in decrying the MSM’s taking Romney out of context. And as for those conservatives that do not like him, I think it is pretty clear that we hold a plethora of opinions on what it means to be a conservative. Romney is a fiscal conservative, he doesn’t spend his way to success he cuts and fine tunes, and removes the fat. He did this in business, at the Olympics and as Governor. He even knew when to fold his cards in 2008, something Gingrich and Santorum, and even Paul have cleary missed the point on. Romney solves problems, his focus is on solving problems that can actually be solved. The extremely poor in the country do not represent a solvable problem. His focus is on the middle class, or in other words the place where the magic happens for our economy. He sees the forest for the trees and all you hear is Gingrich calling him a Mushy Massachusetts Moderate, and you buy it, even after 800 vetos, balanced budgets and the creation of a rainy day fund where there existed a budget defecit and mounting debt, and you still buy the “Moderate” epithet?
Romney throws G’s record in his face and he is called “Mean” and “Negative.” Gingrich regresses to continual name calling like some scared Chihuahua yiping at a disinterested German Shepherd, and he is venerated as a Conservative? Have you even seen his speeches over the years? Do you forget the couch? Ingnorance is bliss.
