Fareed Zakaria Digs Into Glenn Beck, Says Birtherism Is ‘Coded’ Race-Talk

In an interview with Jay Leno, CNN’s Fareed Zakaria dug into Glenn Beck, responding to Beck’s characterization of him–Zakaria–as an “America basher and useful idiot.”
Zakaria told Leno, “I’m an immigrant. I’m not an American by accident of birth, as Glenn Beck is. I’m an American by choice. I came to this country.”
In the same interview, Zakaria also implied that birthers are racist:
Look, I think that some of this [birtherism]–maybe there are people who feel genuinely worried about this–I think some of it is being used by politicians as a coded way to talk about race, and the fact that he’s [Obama's] different from us, whatever that means. I think it’s a great shame. Because first of all, it’s unbecoming, it’s un-American. Secondly, look at this last census. What does it mean to be different from us? You’ve got 50 million Hispanic Americans. You’ve got a country that is increasingly a mixture of minorities. Look at us, we all have funny last names.

We are all holding our breaths to hear you impose your opinions on the rest of us as the final word. For someone who cannot even recognize definitive proof when you see it, you are rather arrogant to insist that we adopt your opinions as our own. Posted on April 1, 2011 at 7:09pmZakaria is the best. It is time to call out the attacks on Obama for what they are–irrational and driven by a secret hatred of someone who looks different. McCain had more questions around his native born birth than Obama did, and the birthers continue to sound like complete fools when they focus on fake controversies around one while taking the other for granted without information. The only way such lies can be repeated so often is if those repeating them irrationally hate the guy. We didn’t see this nearly as much with Clinton, so it cannot be his ideology that they hate, as much as it is his ethnic background. To say all Obama haters are racists is wrong, but to say that many Obama haters are not racist is to ignore the strange inconsistency in their attacks on him as the outsider. Zakaria is hardly an idiot. He’s at least twice as smart as Beck.

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 7:53pmAxel, that could very well be true. I don’t think Zakaria would deny that, nor would I. But to like someone of the same race since it furthers your personal interests and breaks glass ceilings is very different than insisting that something that is demonstrably false is true merely to exploit blind, irrational racism. The most you’ve proven is that birthers are not the only racists, but I would maintain that they are the most destructive racists, after the Nazi’s, KKK and other groups since, while they do not kill, they hurt the democratic process by creating lies that distort it. There is no denying that having a black President helps all blacks in terms of social status, but saying Obama is foreign born when he is not is just stupid and unproductive.

He most certainly did and both his parents were US military citizens so you can be damn sure the Dems at the time were looking for any possible angle to disqualify McCain. Here‘s the kicker and pay attention cause it’s sometimes difficult to believe several senators signed 2008 Senate Resolution 511 declaring McCain a natural born citizen eligible to run for POTUS. The SR 511 uses the 1790 Congressional definition for NBC which is….wait for it…..one born to citizen parents (plural).
Guess who signed it?…..Google it and see.

Report Post »abc
Posted on April 1, 2011 at 7:31pmThat could be racism too, but at least one can state that we want advocacy groups for African Americans or that we want to ensure that there are black police officers as well. We cannot state with any factual accuracy that Obama was not born in the US.
It is not PC but also not controversial to state that the human mind is more sympathetic toward people who look more like us. And we don’t even notice this unless we are objectively studied. This is proven in the psychological literature. So the only way to remain honest about race is to focus on the facts. If I can make a case for why affirmative action and advocacy for minorities should occur, and there are many that can, you shouldn’t assume that the focus pushing those positions are doing it for race. However, if you cannot make a rational case for claiming that Obama was not US-born, then you are only left with irrational cases, of which racism would be a good candidate. This is why your analysis is sadly wrong.
Report Post »nappy
Posted on April 1, 2011 at 8:23pmwow.. pretty big leaps there.
1. You can not make a case for affirmative action in a free, merit based society. If you do, you are simply applying discrimination to solve discrimination. So you’re sadly wrong there.
2. You are asserting that a case can not be made for Obama’s birth records. That’s a giant leap as well. Your posts in this thread are full of assumptions. Must be a comfortable life to have things all so simple. The case for Obama’s birth certificate is made simply be the lack of one. That doesn’t require any deep analysis, doctor. Some believe that we can not factually state with absolute certainty that Obama WAS born in the US. Simple.
Amusing how you glossed over obvious racism to declare “that may be racism too” as if to say.. “ahhh so what. yes it is racism but no one should bat an eye about it.”
That is why your assertions are woefully inadequate.

abc
Posted on April 3, 2011 at 12:53pmNappy, the Supreme Court has supported Harvard College’s attempt to create diversity by admitting students with lower scores who are minorities. As long as sharp quotas are not used, affirmative action has been endorsed by the final arbiter on the issue. You can spout your uninformed opinion all you want, but it is not worth much.
Obama has provided definitive proof that he is US born, and multiple courts have endorsed that proof. I do not make any assumptions, but rely upon the discovery process and judgment of these lawyers. The legal process in multiple districts independently confirmed that he is US born. The two papers in Honolulu 40 years ago also provide independent confirmation. Only a crazy person would question it. There are no assumptions here, unless you don’t live in reality. I have heard no proof on the other side, except that all of this evidence is still not enough. Short of transporting you back to ‘63 in Honolulu to watch it in person, there is no evidence that would satisfy these people. Everything else would be a fraud in their mind. They are irrational. And you either are too dumb to see this or you are crazy too.

And to claim implicitly that there are only accidents prompting abortions kind of ignores things like rape and incest. In any case, to say that a woman has control over her body until a baby is viable without its help (the ruling in Roe v Wade), is pretty consistent actually. A baby is not ‘viable’ without a mother’s help for many years. There is little difference between the womb and life as a breathing infant considering they are still virtually attached to the mother to sustain life.

Zakaria was born to a Konkani Muslim family, and his father was an Islamic scholar. He went to The Cathedral and John Connon School in Bombay, of Anglican-Scottish origins. Nowhere on the school’s site is there a mention of Catholicism. Of his wife, I cannot readily find that she has any ties to Christianity, save that the etymology of her name, Throckmorton, traces back to England. Perhaps you know the family personally? Interesting. FWIW, the NNDB lists his religion as Muslim. Zakaria has stated that he is not a religious person.

An absolute statement by you, ABC, is proven false, using facts and a quotation from the subject himself, essentially contradicting the statement — and instead of conceding, you shoo — launch a kinetic military action on the messenger. I can cite several sources, and you have only your own assumption.
The former president and prime minister of Pakistan, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was also educated at the Cathedral School, and studied law at Christ Church, Oxford. So he was most likely a Christian?
Yes, Zakaria moved to the US and married an American woman. And their son is named after the second Caliph. His wife, Paula, must have insisted.
I’m not presuming you are wrong on other matters by citing one false statement of yours, but when it is framed as a fact, followed by an insult, it does cast a shadow on your other arguments, especially on the topic at hand.
If a person immediately admits their errors on matters of fact, then I think there is a better chance of respecting that person regarding other facts and opinions. (He said, awaiting a gratuitous, trifling example of hypocrisy against a right-wing blah blah…)

No one is clean because it is a contagion that infects everyone around. Racism feeds on division. It creates division initially to pit one groups against each other and then the crimes committed because of that division create lasting hostility keeping the groups separate and hostile. The only way to be free of the grip of racism is to acknowledge its power and renounce. This cannot be done while accusing the other side of being racists.

I am not assuming racism. There is no factual basis for the birthers, the specific subset of Obama critics that I am calling out and Zakaria is as well, to believe that Obama was not born in the US. Their case was heard in court and thrown out. They have no case, no facts, no logic to support their claim, yet they cling to it anyway. What irrationality can account for this? There is no fear in the analysis, unlike your explanation for why conservatives fear that Obama is prejudiced against white people, although most facts would deny this: 1) mother is white; 2) grandparents who raised him are white; 3) majority of staff is white, with fewer top officials in his administration being black than Bush; 4) economic policies do not favor blacks; and I could go on…

Why not charge blacks for being racist ofr NOT being at those rallies? It’s ridiclous to make charges of racism based upon groupings.

Blatantly false. No court has heard the case, the merits of the case have not been heard. They’ve all been dismissed because plantiffs have no legal standing. According to the courts the issue of his birth is a political matter and they refuse to hear the evidence.
ABC wrote;
“He did show his birth certificate. He also showed two independent announcements of his birth, at a time when no one would have had an incentive to lie about it.”
False. He didn’t show his actual BC. He infact signed an executive order keeping all his records a secret. Robert Gibbs posted a bogus COLB on line and waved it around during a press conference.
Odumba to date has spent nearly 2 million in legal fees to make sure his actual BC if there is one never makes it to court.
As for the newspaper announcements they have been proven bogus also. And besides anyone can call a newspaper to publish an announcement, it’s not a legal proof of anything except that somebody wanted to make an announcement.

But I really don’t care about where he was born. I just want to see one example. one. Where he puts America first and speaks of an America that he loves and not just an America he would love to change.
Period.

Posted on April 2, 2011 at 12:53amObama’s grandmother in Kenya says she was present in Kenya at his birth. So tell me is it racist to not believe which one the grandmother who was an adult at the time of the birth or the one freshly born? Beng a natural born citizen is a requirment. The Dems asked his opponent the same question because he was born on a service base outside the country. Clue to all you racists. It isn’t racist to ask a legitimate question.

I and millions of other NATIVE BORN AMERICANS aren‘t interested in this guy’s opinion about anything, much less racism in America. and legallity of Obama’s qualifications for the office of the POTUS.
Question, is CNN having a recruiting problem and unable to hire Americans for it’s programs ? Come on, when I tune into an American news program like CNN I expect to see American reporters. I‘m not the least bit interested in hearing an immigrant’s opinion of current American events or world events that envolve Americans.

It did not use to be this way; used to, the people coming here had to be exceptional and have something to offer. Now, they can be ill with AIDS, uneducated, poor and a burden from the moment they enter, Thanks to Democratic Senator and Murderer Ted Kennedy. Our Country is destroyed FROM THE INSIDE and we say nothing.

I went to media matters yesterday and read a couple of hundred comments; there was no disagreement. I mostly visited “non Glen Beck” articles; I was astounded at the vitriol concerning Glen. There is a whole section dedicated to Glenny.”

It’s not a surprise that you MAY HAVE found a thread on MM where there was NOT “disagreement,” as you do at the blaze, but most often people from both sides of the political aisle post there.

I was not an accidental American by birth but the sure result of normal sexual activity between two natural born citizens. Both my mom and dad were Americans who were born of American citizens who had been born in the USA . I have no problem with any who want to come to America to become Americans in that old fashioned “meltingpot ”sense of e- pluribus -unim. But we have a US Constitution and it is written that no-one can be eligible for the Office of the President except a natural born citizen. = born of two parents who were citizens. To the best of my knowledge
the American by choice Fareed Z. has never campaigned for the Office of the President-should he do so if our Constitution still has any meaning — he would be as inelligible as the Pretender in the WhiteHouse whose desire is to fundamentally change America.

Posted on April 2, 2011 at 9:58amThe morning after the presidential elections, the progressives realized they had just shot themselves in the foot…How could they ever replace the “racism” so useful in their “public relations”?! They have been scrambling ever since to reinstate it, but so far have just shown themselves–over and over again to be the racist ones. I‘m surprised they haven’t yet thought to put emphasis on the fact that BHO isn’t really really black after all….Anyway, it’s fun to watch.

Hey, brilliant one: How do you get “racism” out of “constitutionally ineligible”
He is either eligible or he is not. His race has nothing to do with it, other than the fact that his father was a British subject, as he is or was.

Posted on April 3, 2011 at 12:26pmShowtime, he is constitutionally eligible and multiple courts have said so. Your opinion, which is ill-informed doesn’t trump that of multiple judges. That his father is not a citizen doesn’t make Obama illegible since he was born in the US. You are right, though. There are probably two reasons for people insisting on something when all the evidence and authority says something else: 1) racism, and 2) embarassing stupidity. Which one explains you??

Posted on April 3, 2011 at 1:14pm99.9% of it has nothing to do with race, but name calling is the only card the left has, they have to play it. Conservatives don’t like murder, destruction of the middle class, harming the young, harming the poor, discriminating against others, that America shouldn’t be a world leader all thing Obama has worked hard for. True conservatives don’t like that Obama never earned anything he has gotten, has been given grades, admission into schools, votes all because of his race, this discrimination against others makes us ill, but really doesn’t have anything to do with race, just fairness.
