Fareed Zakaria Suggests U.S. Take a Cue From Iceland: Change the Constitution

Changing the Constitution isn’t an odd suggestion. We have, after all, done it 27 times. But suggesting that the U.S. should take a cue from Iceland, which has opened up changing its constitution to Twitter and Facebook, is odd. That‘s what CNN’s Fareed Zakaria just did. And he made sure to take some shots at our founding document and the Founding Fathers.
“The nation decided it needed a new Constitution and it‘s soliciting ideas from all of Iceland’s 320,000 citizens with the help of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube,” Zakaria says and writes. “This social media method has worked. Ideas have been flowing in. Many have asked for guaranteed, good health care. Others want campaign finance systems that make corporate donations illegal. And some just want the country to make shark finning illegal.”
So far, that’s not too bad (besides the overt liberal agenda suggestions). But then he goes on to talk about our Constitution. And he doesn’t give it a glowing assessment:
By contrast, any talk of revising or revisiting the U.S. Constitution is, of course, seen as heresy. The United States Constitution was, as you know, drafted in a cramped room in Philadelphia in 1787 with shades drawn over the windows. It was signed by 39 people.
America at the time consisted of 13 states. Congress had 26 senators and 65 representatives. The entire population was about one percent of today’s number – four million people.
America was an agricultural society, with no industry – not even cotton gins. The flush toilet had just been invented.
These were the circumstances under which this document was written.
To be fair, he does go on to call it an “extraordinary work.” But that seems more like calling someone ugly and then telling him later that he’s a good-looking kind of ugly.
As Glenn Beck mentioned on radio, Zakaria seems to be stirring up some interesting ideas. Rather than simply suggesting amending the document, he seems to be planting some other sees. By referencing the cool and hip use of social media, and using the imagery of the document being signed by an elite group of people with the blinds closed, he gives the idea of the Constitution being outdated and a thing of the past.
Sure, he later denies that he’s suggesting starting “anew.” But by calling on amendment suggestions via social media and then portraying the Constitution as old and dusty, it seems the damage is already done. Watch below:
By the way, maybe someone should tell Zakaria that we already have a way for citizens to suggest amendments — it’s called talking to your representatives.

It may be because I‘m over forty and don’t feel the need to update everyone I know about every thought I have or move I make. If Fareed only could listen to his own words or understand what he is talking about, he‘d understand that the US Constitution could be changed as it has been many times throughout our Country’s history.
It‘s amazing how little they teach about our Country’s history and the Constitution in school. My newphew just last summer said they had 1 month of US history as part of world history and that they only learned about the ‘important’ Bill of Rights such as the 1st Amendment for “free press”. He had no idea that freedom of religion, right to petition members of Congress, free speeach and freedom to assemble peacefully were also included. He also through in the next sentence that America needed to learn to be less ‘arrogant’. When I started to question him, at that point my niece told him to be quiet. It seems the trick taught to them of don’t listen or talk to your grumpy old uncle (ie Van Jones) is actually in effect.

I am not real smart or overly educated. When I can read your articles and pick up spelling and grammar errors, you need to police up you act. I do not hold bloggers to the same standard as an actual posted article. Bloggers are generally responding quickly and often times are emotional when they are typing their response. The posted articles should be better prepared and should be checked before posting. Consider this, Iceland is located along the Arctic circle with hardly any tourism, a very rough barren geography in which most of the land is not even farmable yet its citizens are some of the most independent, educated, and capable people on the planet with barely any crime at all; yet, down in the Caribbean in the warm inviting inhabitable Tropics lies Haiti. Haiti at one time was richer than each of the 13 colonies of the United States and was known as the Jewel of the West. In the 1790s we all understand that Haiti had a little rebellion. They raped pillaged and slaughtered practically all of the inhabitants which spoke incessantly of the virtues of egalitarianism but that’s a different story for another day.
Now for over 200 years the Haitians have ruled the island of Haiti. They inherited the crown jewel of the West a nation replete with natural resources, beautiful beaches, and year round farmable land yet today it is nothing but crime ridden, poverty and aids infested, corrupt bankrupted society which boasts voodoo as its nation’s biggest religion.

Furthermore the US Army has rebuilt Haiti three times in the 20th century providing roads, bridges, power plants, hospitals, etc and most recently under Bill Clinton providing them up to 10 Billion in economic aid.
In light of the contradictions what sets Iceland apart from Haiti? Furthermore, anyone care to surmise what would be the results of transposing the populations? Interesting isn’t it?
