Fastest Lap Around Manhattan: Driver Sets New Record

Fastest Lap Around Manhattan: Driver Sets New RecordBack in 2001, “speed-racer” Alex Roy set the fastest record for circling Manhattan in 27 minutes, allegedly reaching speeds of 144 mph. Apparently he never released the tape due to legal reasons.

Roy’s record however, has now been beat and by about one entire minute. The new record holder clocked in at 26:03.

More from Jalopnik:

The video below purports to be from the Corporate Broadcasting Company, which is some sort of anonymous quasi-anarchist global collective dedicated to “IDEAS MEDIA PEOPLE.”

They open their attempt by paying homage to “the great Alex Roy” and his record-breaking Manhattan run, as well as his record-breaking Transcontinental Run. Also, symbolically, Claude Lelouch‘s C’etait un Rendezvous, which infamously recorded the director’s illegal run through the streets of Paris one morning.

Though they’ve chosen to remain anonymous, they’ve shared numerous details about their journey. They can be seen driving a Saturn Sky convertible.

This is all BS. The car they drove was Saturn Sky. To match the same time as Alex Roy they also had to reach speeds of 144 MPH—-sorry a Saturn Sky is fun to drive but cannot reach 144 MPH with that 2.4L engine. I think its a bunch of hooey.

Why’d they need such a sporty-worty, fasty-wasty little vroom-vroom, zoom-zoom car to do it in?

Couldn’t they have just as easily done it in a Silverado pickup?

What’s the loop distance and speed limit? He averaged 56+ MPH. It sounds like another day on the job for me. My work vehicle does not get the top speed that he hit, but I can see averaging the same MPH. And he did it at night with little traffic.

I am not disputing his victory, but alot of risk for very little reward.

WHY would you want to? Seems like its just a waste of time to me. But then again I guess if you don’t have any evidence of doing it.Then I could make it in 20 minutes.

Speed isn’t dangerous if you know what you are doing and are driving a vehicle that can hold beyond that tolerance. Ever wonder why the guys going 16000 mph in orbit don’t hit one of the 200,000 piece of junk up there? They aren’t morons. You drive with a big mac in your face. They don’t.

I agree that speed is not what makes driving dangerous, if anything, people driving fast are very aware of their surroundings and pay much more attention than most drivers on the road. The car does have to have a few things though— good brakes and a suspension that can keep the car grounded and maneuverable.

Soccer moms in a 2 1/2 ton SUV and talking on their cell phones are more of a threat than a guy going 80mph. Situational awareness and manners when driving will help all drivers stay safe….keep out of the left lane unless passing, and look before you change lanes.

After all the crazy driving I did as a kid, drinking, racing, crashing, it finally caught up to me. When I was 48, I was hit by a sober driver, while I was sober, and doing under the speed limit. I lost my leg. Does anyone keep the stats on how many alcohol related fatalities are caused by the sober driver? You just never know.

I could be a old man and say“ these damn kids”,but part of me still remembers doing150+ on 2 lane in the old classics,69 roadrunner, now that was a hunk of detroit steel! 68-70 chargers, about anything we could get our hands on, and no not all of us lived to tell about it,god rest their souls, although none were killed in a race, alcohol and speed doesn‘t mix well with teen’s. for you young’ins, things were different in the 70-80′s

It looks pretty tame to me, I mean, they even stopped for red lights without cross traffic. I feel very certain that I’ve covered more ground in less time on my non-sporty motorcycle on the CA-74 &76 through twisty valleys and blind corners. This was tame and just a little lame. I seriously doubt that anyone was in immenent danger.

      ______________

That is correct, he blacked out the edges more and more the faster he went to give the appearance of hitting a much higher speed and dubbed in the sound of a Ferrari 275 GTB 4-cam (keep in mind though that that Mercedes 450 SEL station wagon had a gigantic V8 in it…6.8 litter I think…and he was still hauling arse) ….still one of my favorite videos of all time, have prob. watched that thing 5000 times lol… here it is if anyone hasn’t seen it yet here it is—> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eidtc55ZqoU

That is pretty awesome. However I find it a little hypocritical that he would wildly break the speed limit . Yet they are very strict in observing the traffic light laws. I would think it would be just a stop and situation. Especially with a record on the line.
