‘Fat Bit**’: NYC Subway Riders Brawl Over Woman’s Spaghetti-Eating

There is a NYC subway rider‘s code that says you just don’t eat food on the train. Sure, a Snickers here and there, or even (if you want to push it) a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is okay. But a Subway sandwich on the subway, a juicy burger, or even Chinese food is out of the question. And so too is spaghetti.

So when one girl started chowing down on some of the aforementioned pasta on the train recently, she drew the ire of a fellow passenger. Things started with your typical name-calling (“animal” and “bit**” got thrown around) and then degenerated into this (all out madness):

You forget though, in the even of a natural disaster, they’d all pull together and politely watch out for each other.

Riiiight…Let me ask you something…if you were one of those who survived, would you really mind at this point if a natural (or man made) disaster wiped out a 3rd of the population in America?

A comedian I once saw, had a catch phrase…“Time to cull the herd”…I think I see his point now.

Exactly–consider the context. Most people would find it too jerky/stop-start to want to eat on the train, so I doub’t this woman is going to set any new mass transit trends in New York. It was an isolated incident, she should have been left alone.

the violence was uncalled for. The woman eating was not bothering anybody and seemed to be eating in a respectful manner; out of container with a plastic bag under container. If it doesn’t pick my pocket or break my bones. To call someone an animal was also uncalled for.

It was TOTALLY called for. Animals will eat anything, anywhere, anytime. The food-snarfing woman was acting like an animal, inconsiderate and instinctual. We, as humans, have the ability, ulike animals, to make reasonable decisions, such as being polite, that may go against our instincts. Animals are unable to do that. They can only do what instict or training tells them to. Animals have no free will.

I’m shocked at the immaturity of some of the posters regarding this issue. Reserved parking spaces for the handicapped = violation of the founding principles? Seriously?

You DO understand that the Constitution only limits the Federal Government’s powers, right? It doesn’t apply to city or state ordinances. A city can enact just about any rule or law the population desires.

Beyond that, if someone is violating a law and someone else calls them on it, it doesn’t make the outside party a “busy body”, it makes them a “stand up individual”. You know, I hope that if you’re in a position to be annoyed by some jerk breaking a law in your proximity, that someone with more testicular fortitude than you have will stand up for your rights, too. You should be so lucky.

ursamajor…you sound like a hysterical ass. this is about saving TAX DOLLARS. There isn’t an unwritten code. As someone mentioned above in NYC it is LAW that you can’t eat on the trains (it is the in every other city I’ve lived in). It attracts vermin and disease. It also costs more to clean up when there is a buffet smeared on the floor from some jag who can’t wait 10 minutes til they are street side to finish their food. It also spares lawsuits when these same idiots spill a hot cup of coffee on someone and that person suits the city (and wins)
I don’t see how it is patently unfair to tell someone to not eat their smelly food in what is essentially a sealed container. You know the old saying ‘your rights end at the beginning of my nose’ well, the odor of that crap is barging it’s way straight passed my my nose. Thus the crux of the law.
You talk about the founding fathers but they had laws too, chief. Beyond that, they believed in letting cities and States set their own laws which NYC has done. Most of the same founding fathers lived in places that had civil codes in the cities akin to this ordinance. You need to learn history and you need to learn to pick your battles more carefully.

It took almost 3 minutes of reashurch to find the rules (laws) that govern the riders of the NY subway (most major subways have identical or simular laws).

There IS A LAW AGAINST EATING ON THE SUBWAY! You CAN drink non-alocholic bervarages from a closed (lidded) container.

It only takes a minute of thought to see that the law is intended to protect the public from all the results of spilled (and it will get spilled) food. Of thoes who think this is no big deal, which one of you would like to clean up the mess left by the spilled food when the train bumps or stops or jerks as they all do? Do you think for a moment, the person who is willing to break the law, even cares about the people around them or would clean-up after themselves? So who will clean-up? My guess is that the Transit athority will have to use Union Labor (they are all Unionized) and they will have to be paid a special hazzard-pay for handling Bio-Hazzards.

If you concider the above, does that change your opinion about the incodent?

So, question, is there an actual law that says you can’t eat on the subway or it is just an matter of politeness?. Wow, glad I don’t live in New York or have to take the subway everyday.http://wp.me/pYLB7-KJ

I don’t know about NY subway but in DC there is no food or drink allowed on the metro. This is a perfect example of the entitlement crowd showing their utter disregard for other people. It’s all about me, me, me all the time. These folks are never taught about manners and common courtesy and people that have been raised properly are sick and tired of it. I hope we see more of this…..people need to stop putting up with their selfish actions. None of the other black folks seemed to upset about the whole thing, leading me to believe that it is common knowledge that food is a no no on the subway.

You seem to be under the impression that freedom means anarchy. While perhaps you do not agree with a rule, there are reasons they are put in place. Here, in the subway, for instance, if you let passengers bring meals on-board with them, such as this “lady” did, too often the subway would be crowded with people eating. This would increase the amount of waste disposal required in the subway and around the subway stations, requiring more people to attend to it. There would also be a need to clean the train more frequently, as with a high volume of people in a densely packed area, food spills/accidents are almost sure to occur. The subway system is a business, like any other, and should not be made to bend to you, the consumers’ will simply because you are hungry and cannot wait 30 minutes until you are home.

By your logic, if you don’t want to stop at a stoplight, should you be able to just speed right through it, as it is your freedom to do so? Your logic is extremely flawed here, and you don’t seem to understand the fundamental differences between freedom and anarchy.

Blaze, I hope you didn’t remove my comment. I’m going to repost it and if it disappears a second time, I will never listen to Glenn Beck again. There is nothing about this post that is not true or anything in it that would be considered offensive by Americans with an ounce of sense. If you do censor it, then you are just as despicable as so-called Liberals and just as guilty as them when it comes to exploiting minorities, because you are trying to suppress the truth. Once again…

Conservatives need to be relentless about exposing the Liberal exploitation of minorities for political gains; otherwise, crime rates, unemployment rates, high school dropout rates, illiteracy rates, drug abuse rates, spousal abuse rates, child abuse rates and abortion rates will remain abnormally high in the black community. What Liberals are doing to minorities is a crime. They have been using the ghettos as voting plantations since LBJ, where their slaves are fed and sheltered as long as the slaves behave and vote to keep Liberals in power. When slaves dare to leave the plantation to become self-sufficient, they are hunted down and verbally lynched. We need more outstanding Americans like Herman Cain to go into the ghettos to let these people know that they are human beings with intrinsic worth. Just like the founders of the Republican Party fought to free the slaves of the 1800s, contemporary Republicans need to fight to free modern slaves from their Liberal masters.

      …..

There is in fact a law NO FOOD NO DRINK on the MTA subways. They don‘t really enforce it though and to some that means they don’t have to follow it.

People in NY pull across the intersection after deciding that the red light they are stopped at is too long. This place is descending into pre-African anarchy.

The only mouth causing a scene was the one being stuffed with spaghetti. I believe that if the girls had been White, the woman would’ve said something to them as well. The White woman made a decision that she was going to hold these Black young ladies to the same standard as everyone on the train. In other words, she did not patronize them by not expecting that someone who is Black should not be held to the same standards as everyone else. The White woman is no longer afraid of being called a racist, and she literally took a stand!

You know that eating on trains in new york city causes waste, waste that is then eaten by rats and rats cause disease. Sorry if you don’t live in an urban area, but many places have a no food policy for this reason. Also, food causes messes, which have to then be cleaned up, which then means we have to pay for someone to clean it up. Which causes a cost, which causes taxes. Pretty simple ideas here…not rocket science.

When you ride on a subway train, you agree to give up some rights as a private commuter. This is not an example of a fascist state, the spaghetti chomper can eat spaghetti while driving her own car anytime she pleases. Nobody is stopping her. When I’m at home (not now), I sometimes like to pick my nose and walk in my underwear, should I also have the right to do that on a subway train?

I have to say I like the fact this woman DOESN’T follow ALL the rules.. IF you look at people as they board a train it looks like a cattle car being load.. all the sheep following the rules set down to put them ALL in the SAME square box.. and the SHEEP pay for it.. what people don‘t realize is it’s a NUDGE to conform to what THEY want.. to see how well they can CONTROL you and if you DON’T conform how many people will react like the person who called her names..

This is not a story about liberal vs conservative, rather, this is a story concerning city vs country. In the city, you don’t have an expectation of privacy, but you have an expectation of anonymity. In the country, you don’t have an expectation of anonymity, but you have an expectation of privacy.

I don’t know about NYC, but I lived in Chicago and Los Angeles and in both places if you are caught eating on the trains/buses you can be cited. (same goes for drinks) As the author of the story said, they will usually let a candy bar slide if you just power house it down and don’t make a mess but even then they can if they want to.
It‘s about keeping the trains and buses clean so there aren’t a billion pieces of food sloshing around and I can tell you from experience, some people who decide to flout the rules don’t exactly hold their items all that firmly and end up spilling hot coffee all over you. In a case like that a lawsuit could be brought up against the city which is ANOTHER reason to ban that sort of thing on the train.

The whole story is not being told here.

The two girls (both teenagers) were being chastised for eating on the train by a GROUP of people — including two black gentleman and another woman — seated to their right. By the time the camera started recording, there was already an argument underway between them. The white woman then interjected her not-so-constructive “animals” comment to support the others. At that point, the girls shifted their focus from the group to her.

Apparently bent on escalating the situation before their stop, the girl eating pasta and her friend stood up and further confronted the group…in particular, the opinionated white woman. At that point, the gentleman continued to chastise the “immature” girls and advised them to “relax” and “chill out” before ultimately intervening to break up the resulting confrontation.

It did NOT start out as a conflict between the white woman and the two girls. That seems to have been lost in the repeated showing of this video. The white woman’s comment was unnecessarily provocative and only served to raise the tension level to the point that there was an altercation.

The real story here, though, is the utter lack of respect on the part of everyone involved. The two girls clearly have no respect for rules, authority or their elders. I would’ve never talked back to an adult stranger the way these girls did. It just wasn’t permitted in my house.

Likewise, the white woman was out of line for her comment. To show disdain or disapproval is one thing. Good parents do it all the time without insulting their kids or engaging in personal attacks. To call complete strangers “animals” for eating pasta on a train is a bit over the line. She was unnecessarily rude and it came back to bite her.

This should not be turned into a black/white issue, though. This was about bad decisions, bad behavior and mutual disrespect by all parties involved. No one in this clip can claim innocence or a moral high ground. In essence, they all reaped what they sowed.

Obvously some of these idiots have obviously never ridden on a city bus or subway system. Public transportation systems have rules that people are expected to abide by. These rules are in place for a reason. Those who abide by the rules take exception when they see someone who thinks they’re above the rules. Bottom line…if you don’t want to follow the rules when you ride public transportation, then get a car.
