BLACKWOOD, N.J. (AP) — An enormously fat cat named Prince Chunk who became famous when he was found wandering in New Jersey after his owner lost her home to foreclosure has died.
Prince Chunk’s adoptive owner, Vince Damiani of Blackwood, said the white tabby died in his sleep Sunday. He was about 10 years old. Damiani said a veterinarian had diagnosed the cat with heart disease.
Prince Chunk skyrocketed to fame in August 2008 after the Camden County Animal Shelter, which took him in, reported that he weighed 44 pounds, just shy of a world record.
Damiani believes that estimate may have been somewhat exaggerated. He said Prince Chunk weighed 22 pounds when he brought the cat home from the shelter.
He soon became a media sensation, appearing on “Good Morning America,” ”Live with Regis and Kelly,” the covers of the New York tabloids and in People magazine.
The Damiani family was chosen from among 500 applicants to adopt him.
The pet’s plight inspired the Damianis to establish the Prince Chunk Foundation, a nonprofit that helps financially distressed pet owners keep their animals. The foundation operates in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and California.
Its mission is to prevent animal homelessness by providing temporary assistance to dog and cat owners, including free emergency vet care and pet food, Damiani said.

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 12:37pmThis is so obviously Bush’s fault, it makes one wonder. This cat had a home the whole time Bush was in office. Then, the owners lose their house (because of Fannie and Freddie?). Ah, but he is rescued by the intervention of a stimulus plan (the cat keeps getting fed). Ah, but the cat dies of heart disease because he was too fat.(so, do the food police investigate?) ..It is all so confusing. Details at 11.

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 11:41amI know people are passionate about their pets and that is fine. I have to say though, we do live, for the time being, in a free country and if someone just can’t stand a certain animal..o.k. It‘s everyone’s prerogative to like or dislike. I know someone who can’t stand cats, calls them slimy, sneaky, disease carriers and will never own one..that’s fine.
I think a lot of you are getting you chain yanked and don’t realize it..

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 9:59amMy Maine Coon mix weighs 17 lbs, has heart disease, and is medicated twice daily for it. He also eats weight control food. With advances in vet care, many inside cats live to be 20 years old. If he dies before me, he will be waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge. I’m sure that is where Prince Chunk is right now.

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 10:02amI have taught my 4 daughters, and 3 grandaughters that a man who doesn‘t like cats can’t be trusted. People who hate or abuse/torture cats, or any animals for that matter, generally carry that behavior over to humans. You are one sick and attention starved human.

So now I must be the antichrist because I hate cats? If you like cats I’m OK with that. Think I’ll go catch a Steelhead this am and use the guts for cat bait.

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 8:24amI had a cat named Tigger that live till he was 18 his heart gave out but I didn’t take him every year for his shots only when he was a kitten or if he got sick which was once for bladder infection and put him on WAL-MART BRAND urinary tract food and never got sick after that.I personally think some of these shots they get do more harm then good. Now my dogs yes they get their shots every year those do help them but I have a wonderfull vet who isn’t always trying to scam me with guilt. He truely cares about the animals and will even tell me some home remedies that work and if they don’t then he tells me to bring them in.I don’t buy into all those stupid commercials about which dog food is better then others and your dog will love them really PLEASE.IF YOU DON‘T STAND FOR SOMETHING YOU’LL FALL FOR ANYTHING.

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 7:52amA family lost its pet and this is the best writers on this site can do? Just because you rescue and take care of an abandoned animal does not make you PETA and does not deserve smart ass comments, cat, dog or any other critter. Trolls, we expect them to be rude, crude and socially unacceptable but I’m truely surprised at others. Guess the holiday spirit left.

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 8:59amDear REPUB,
You wouldn’t believe how many of these filthy things I have to remove from my property. Any animal that has to stand in it‘s own pee and poop of the week and then sit and lick it’s paws and wipe it’s face is in my opinion NASTY. So now you think there is something wrong with me? Go hug a lib. You might also want to go clean the cat box, just cause you can‘t smell it doesn’t mean your friends can’t. You must like the smell of cat in your garden and flower beds. By the way I take them up to a outfitter that trains his dogs with them. That makes me want to go shooting today, won’t that be fun?

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 12:34pmIt’s quite alright to not like cats, or to even hate them. But to propose to eat them, catch them and use them to train dogs (often done to train pitbulls meant for the dog fighting business) is to advocate animal abuse.

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 4:35pmI’m sorry if I offended anyone. Although a few of you Jack wagons need to quit using your belly button as a window. I would have nothing to do with a woman who had cats. I’ve found that these women see the world through their belly buttons. No good in survival situations.

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 8:26pmYou obviously know nothing about cats. They don’t urinate/defacate on themselves, in fact they don’t even have a need for toilet paper. They do lick themselves to stay clean, and are very clean animals for the most part. Unlike dogs, you won’t find them eating the poop of other animals, or coming into the house with a need for a butt cleaning. No one will force you to like felines. You must be the “big” man who finds it necessary to kick that cat or dog to show how manly you are, sicko.

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 3:33pmSo true Snowleopard. Although I don’t agree with him have being that heavy. Because I have a diabetic kitty who has been on insulin for nearly 6 years because of his weight but since then he’s dropped some of it.The alleged culprit was Science Diet dry food, not table food but I can never condone putting your cat in serious health risk like that. It cost enough money treating animals when they’re healthy but add on serious health issues and your cost is almost tripled.
But yes, he was loved & cared for up until the end. I’ve rescued many stray/feral cats in my time, some stayed with me, some adopted out but being responsible pet owner is the key to a healthy cat. This kitty may have lived longer, especially inside cats if they would have put him on a diet. But anyway, RIP Prince Chuck. This one hits close to home more ways than one. ;)

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 4:01pmI have a 1 year old black cat named Salem and he’s been big from day one. We saved a stray and she had two kittens. He eats no more than the other cats, but must have a horrible metabolism as he weighs about 15 lbs. We have another cat named Giga Byte and he‘s the only one that gets to eat people food and it’s usually a little piece of meat every now and then and he’s skinny…very active cat.
For those whom have a problem with these type of stories; stop being so serious. Every now and then a good little story like this is a nice break from the real news.
