FBI Investigates GOP Members After Nude Swim Incident in Israel

During a 2011 fact-finding trip to Israel, a contingent of GOP freshmen lawmakers and “top leadership staff” allegedly had a few drinks and went for a late night swim in the Sea of Galilee.

And, yes, the FBI interviewed those involved over reports that they might have engaged in “inappropriate behavior.”

About 20 people took part in the swim (most of them clothed or partially disrobed) and Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) actually took off his all his clothes, according to POLITICO.

“A year ago, my wife, Brooke, and I joined colleagues for dinner at the Sea of Galilee in Israel. After dinner I followed some Members of Congress in a spontaneous and very brief dive into the sea and regrettably I jumped into the water without a swimsuit,” Rep. Yoder said in a statement to POLITICO.

“It is my greatest honor to represent the people of Kansas in Congress and [for] any embarrassment I have caused for my colleagues and constituents, I apologize,” he added.

Among those who participated in late night swim were Rep. Steve Southerland (R-Fla.) and his daughter; Rep. Tom Reed (R-N.Y.) and his wife; Reps. Ben Quayle (R-Ariz.), Jeff Denham (R-Calif.) and Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.), according to Jake Sherman and John Bresnahan of POLITICO.

So, questions about whether this actually merited an investigation from the same agency that got its start fighting the mob aside, why did they jump into the lake?

“Many of the lawmakers who ventured into the ocean [lake?] said they did so because of the religious significance of the waters. Others said they were simply cooling off after a long day. Several privately admitted that alcohol may have played a role in why some of those present decided to jump in,” the report states.

Concluding a probe by the FBI, it appears no “inappropriate behavior” or “wrongdoing” occurred.

However, that’s not to say Minority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) wasn’t irritated with the swimmers. According to a Cantor spokesman, he “dressed down” his colleagues the next morning, telling them that they were distracting from the purpose of the trip.

Citing several recent scandals, POLITICO suggests that this might become another black eye for a wildly unpopular congress. However, doesn’t it seem a bit much to put a late night dip in the Sea of Galilee in the same category as Reps. Anthony Weiner and Christopher Lee’s sexting scandals or David Wu resigning over an “unwanted” sexual encounter with a friend’s daughter?

Patrick Dorton, a spokesman for the American Israel Educational Foundation, said the following in an email to POLITICO:

As part of the trip, and after of day of meetings including with the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, and briefings on Hezbollah and the border with Lebanon, trip participants traveled to the shore of the Sea of Galilee.

This location made it possible to visit a series of Christian holy sites the next day. After dinner that evening, some in the group went swimming in the biblically significant sea [lake?].

    I mean, it’s not like holder dismissing charges of voter intimidation against the Black Panthers, or aiding and abetting sworn enemies of our Country in the Middle East, or using “stimulus funds to buy 1/2 billion shares of Gaybama Motors, or aiding and abetting drug cartels with firearms resulting in the death of a border Guard, and safe passage of drug shipments, – NO!

      I fail to see the outrage here. It was late night, so there was probably nothing visible, he was under the supervision of his wife and there wasn’t some orgy or public masturbation or anything. God made the naked human body and it was good. It’s man(kind) that makes it bad.

      This is the result of our oversexed, porned-out society. All we know of nudity is sex, so someone swimming naked in the Sea of Galilee in the dark is thought of as disgusting. I would say that no matter what letter followed his name.

      Yep, I‘ll just bet that when Judge Jorge Solis did much of the FBI’s work at the conclusion of the HLF terror trial, he could never have imagined that the FBI would be too busy investigating skinny dippers!

      Solis named CAIR, ISNA and NAIT as “unindicted co-conspirators,” meaning that the judge saw a close association with Hamas, the well-known terror group. In effect, the judge was saying “Hey, FBI, if you bring these treasonous bastards up on charges, you’ll probably get a conviction.

      “We’re too busy, judge, because we have a hot skinny dipping incident to investigate!”

      How proud the parents of the FBI agents investigating the skinny dipping incident must be! They can brag to their friends about what a great pension and welfare system the FBI has and they get lots of vacation. “Oh, I can‘t talk about any investigations she’s involved in! It might jeopardize the case she’s building.” Yeah, right, grandma.

      How do these folks hold their heads up at work; or, does everybody try to out-BS everybody else?

Why aren’t they doing their real jobs..investigating Holder and Obama for crimes against the state..or the black panthers urging of killing white babies, or Southern Poverty Law Center who put the organization Family Research Council on hits hate list…leading to the shooting of a guard last week. You don’t even hear about it on the main stream media. They said today on Fox, that if this had been some right wing nut shooting up planned parenthood it would be non stop coverage.     I was on the Sea of Galilee earlier this year, but was so caught of up the moment of the ministry our Lord Jesus that it never occurred to me to go skinny-dipping or worry if the FBI was in the boat near me. This is wrong on a couple of different levels … may that’s just because I paid my own way to get there.

      Yep, TexGran, looks like we are on our own on this one. I have 2 problems. This group was in Israel on a taxpayer trip and even worse for me they were in the world’s most precious Holyland. I was there and I never saw anyone even scantily-clad, let along naked and I was at the Sea of Galilee at night time a few times. I don’t care what their political party, I or my friends would have not acted in this manner.

      We brief members of our military that each & everyone of them is an ambassador of the USA when serving as a guest (both on & off duty) while abroad .

      Members of Congress, their staff & families should be held to at least that standard. This was official travel on the American taxpayer’s dime to represent the USA – this is shameful.

      Military members who did this or anything similar would receive some form of UCMJ &/or administrative discipline.

      Even the possibility of acts which could embarrass the US or cause the expulsion of an American in an official position is always investigated as a possible international incident by the Regional Security Officer & the FBI by our embassies & consulates.

      You do understand that the Sea of Galilee is not in the United States, don’t you? So, I don’t think they could be charged with US laws. (I believe that would be a state law, making it even more difficult to determine the jurisdiction. Would they charge under Kansas law since he’s from Kansas?)

      That said, I think he should resign. We hold our party to a much higher standard than the democrats.

      OleF, I respectfully disagree. A vacation is when someone uses their own money when they have time off of work. This was a tax-payer trip. Sometimes are a BoonDoggle for family members because they pay their own way to meet up with their family member who has gotten somewhere by the tax-payer dollar. Propriety is still in order. Not to mention, how do you go to the HolyLand and strip naked in front of a bunch of other people to jump into the waters where Jesus walked on top of!!! I’ve been there. You just don’t do that!

      these are ostensibly official fact finding missions to educate, inform & assist members of Congress & their staff in producing informed quality legislation – all paid for by the taxpayer. In reality the not so secret secret is they are junkets, perks, boondoggles.

      The US military is tasked to “host” hundreds of these every year.

      The real story here is a possible abuse of power by the DOJ for POLITICAL REASONS. There is no way that the FBI should be investigating a possible misdemeanor, if that, committed in another country. This is the administration using Federal Agencies to try to get dirt on political opponents.

      Condemn the Politicians if you want although in all fairness it is pretty clear that only one took off all of his clothes, not everyone. So don’t vote for them come election time. BUT what should SCARE the crap out of you is the fact that the DOJ had the FBI investigate it.

      Those “Bohemian Grove freaks” are in the U.S. and not on a taxpayer funded business trip. Cantor had every right to chew them out for getting drunk and being stupid in a foreign country. Their behavior was embarrassing for someone representing American citizens, let alone on foreign soil. For pity sake, you folks are still squealing over President Obama bowing to the Saudi King, even if it’s local custom (Bush kissed him on the mouth and held hands, I guess that’s okay, though.) And I’d be just as disgusted and angry if it was Democrats.

      This is one time I disagree. And am glad Eric Cantor dressed them down. According to this article they met with the President of the Palestinian Authority and were briefed on Hezbollah and the border of Lebanon. Just happens some wives and daughters were along and it was just possible they visited some religious holy sites. And later wound up in the sea one in skinny dipping attire. Nice work if you can get it and I am ashamed when our reps behave like this. And no, it isn’t like Weiner or Wu or Lee and nowhere near Ted Kennedy but it is our money and this sounds like a Nancy Pelosi off to Syria when she became speaker and a Michelle Obama using Air Force One. This is the year of the tea party replacing idiots and drunken ones should fit the bill. Sorry this election is so damn important and this ridiculous behavior. They should tourist on their own dime. A briefing? Please.
