FBI Invites Virulent Westboro Baptist Church to Assist in Counterterrorism Training Program The Westboro Baptist Church (which is not part of any legitimate Christian denomination) has made headlines the world round for its protests at U.S. military funerals, hatred of homosexuals, support of dangerous foreign regimes and the like.

And now, NPR reports that the FBI invited the group, which prides itself on crafting protest signs that read “God Hates the USA” and “Pray for More Dead Soldiers,” to assist in a counterterrorism training program…on a U.S. military base.

This spring, bureau officials invited leaders of the radical group to Quantico Marine base in Virginia. NPR has more:

…after four sessions this spring, the FBI canceled the arrangement amid criticism from inside the bureau, while church leaders claimed that they had been misled…

The FBI first invited the church group to address the FBI’s law enforcement training classes back in 2008. And initially, there were no apparent problems. But the most recent sessions, including three at Quantico and one in Manassass, Va., stirred up controversy.

According to Timothy Phelps, church leader Fred Phelps’ youngest son, he spoke to local law enforcement officials at the FBI Academy at Quantico and later to agents in Manassas. Phelps says that the program was intended to assist agents in maintaining composure and balance when chatting with suspects with whom they vehemently disagree.

In the most recent sessions, which each contained about 50 individuals, tensions were high. According to NPR:

Phelps said the sessions were contentious. “Some of the students in the class take the gloves off and basically push the envelope about, ‘what will happen when the day comes that your so-called leader tells you to use violence,’ ” Phelps said. “Our leader won’t tell us to do anything except what is written in scripture. We don’t have a leader like what they want to believe we have. … We have a preacher.”

There seemed to be a disconnect between Phelps‘ definition of the intended purpose of the classes and the FBI’s. Law enforcement officials who attended the classes claimed that they were focused upon helping agents better understand domestic terrorists and extremists. Phelps, though, claims that the FBI lied to him and that he had no idea that he was part of a domestic terror curriculum.

Regardless of these technicalities, there is painful irony in the fact that, considering their anti-Americanism and anti-military sentiment, Westboro leaders were invited to speak at a military base. As NPR notes, these classes occurred at the same time that Westboro was engaged in a Supreme Court battle (which the group inevitably won) with the father of Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew. If you’ll recall, the group staged a protest at the fallen hero’s funeral.

Following internal questions at the FBI, a memo has gone out telling staff not to invite Westboro congregants back to speak. The official who originally asked the group to participate claims that he saw the “church’s” leaders as a viable resource for training agents in counterterrorism approaches.

    This group of idiots have no right to enjoy the freedoms so many of our brave fought and died for. The FBI should be investigating them, but you know where these idiotic orders came down from. The so called church group sound more like terrorist than a church group! I’m sure many of our excellent agents in the FBI, Secret Service, and A.T.F are looking forward to 2012.     Has anyone ever considered the fact that this fake Christian group may actually be a leftist organization pretending to be a religious group? I have never met a true Christian that would consider doing and saying what these people are doing and saying.     I don’t know why you guys are upset with the FBI over this, they did not invite the WBs over for tea and cookies. The WBs were a training tool in terrorism, extremism and overall wackjobism. The trainer who came up with the idea is a genius, the WBs are so arrogant they walked right in thinking they had something to offer the country. It’s probably the higher ups at the FBI that chickened out of a good training plan.

    The overwhelming majority of upper and mid-level “management” agents in the FBI have never even made a misdemeanor arrest of anyone. Therein lies a huge problem. The FBI has become a political career agency, that has SOME excellent law enforcement agents who actually care about what has happened to their agency.
    There is a reason the FBI as a whole is held in such disdain by law enforcement agencies around the country, and it isn’t professional jealousy at all, it’s their gross incompetence.
    Federal Bureau of Incompetence, Fan Belt Installers, there’s a reason or myriad of reasons, common sense is in extremely short supply within the Bureau.

    It makes sense, if your trying to teach agents to maintain composure, you bring in the most despicable people you can find to confront your agents. My initial idea was have the WBs walk over a big pit with a false floor over it, but I guess the FBI had a better plan than mine.

    Obviously, the crap that the American People put into office has won – it’s over for anyone who expected to live a decent life in this country. We are a minority that is too small to have a chance to fix what is wrong. We have disintegrated to the point of no return.

    I hope they like the third world country they are creagting. I wonder what they’ll do when everyone runs out of money, and no taxes are being collected.

      Perhaps there is SOMETHING the feds are not yet able to do under the “patriot act” that they are free to do once a person is invited into their offices. (some bit of surveillence or background investigation or something)

      Although, considering the broad, seemingly limitless scope of the ‘patriot act’, I’m not sure what the FBI or other agencies cannot yet do / research / investigate.

      That’s about the ONLY reason I can think of for inviting them.

      Anyone else have any ideas?

      Seems pretty straight forward to me. The FBI wanted to study potential domestic terrorists. So they brought in potential domestic terrorist in to study them. To get them to go along with it, they fed WBC a line of BS. Apparently they caught on, and now they’re mad. Poor babies. Maybe they can sue over it, that seems to be their main source of income.

      It is not too late yet; there is still hope until the last line is drawn. When the last of us gives up the hope and the cause, then and only then will it end.

      In a way I find it kind of poetic that the folks of the Westborogh Church are invited to a counter terrorist seminar at a MILITARY BASE…with them, even privatly, the FBI and such get to see a potential domestic terrorist radical band first hand, while the military could have towed off their vehicles or something…would have been fitting.

      Westboro Baptist Church is only guilty of exercising their federally upheld right to assemble and protest….yet they’re being looked at by the FBI as domestic terroists, That to me is disturbing and should alarm everyone on this board.

      Question why does the media ignore the fact that the Westboro Baptist Church is a Democrat hate group? If they were associated with the right you would always hear right wing extremist or republican associated with the name. It’s fact they are Democrats and the media ignores it. Anyone who leaves out the association of the Westboro Baptist Church and the Democrat party has a liberal bias.
