FBI Notified: Anita Hill Rejects Apology Request From Ginny Thomas

The wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said Tuesday that she had phoned the woman who nearly derailed her husband’s 1991 confirmation hearing when she accused him of sexual harassment — a claim Justice Thomas denied. In a phone call to Anita Hill last weekend, Ginny Thomas says she left a message on Hill’s office answering machine asking for an apology for “what you did with my husband.”

“I did place a call to Ms. Hill at her office, extending an olive branch to her after all these years, in hopes that we could ultimately get past what happened so long ago,” Ginny Thomas told Reuters Tuesday.

“That offer still stands. I would be very happy to meet and talk with her if she would be willing to do the same. Certainly no offense was ever intended.”

ABC News has published what it says is a transcript of Thomas’ voicemail message to Hill:

“Good morning, Anita Hill, it’s Ginny Thomas. I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband. So give it some thought and certainly pray about this and come to understand why you did what you did. Okay, have a good day.”

According to ABC, Hill — now a professor at Brandeis University — initially thought the call was some kind of a prank.  According to the New York Times, Hill says she kept the message for nearly a week, unsure if it was actually from Ms. Thomas. Unsure, Hill told the Times that she handed it over to Braindeis campus police “with a request to convey” it to the FBI.

“Even if it wasn’t a prank, it was in no way conciliatory for her to begin with the presumption that I did something wrong in 1991,” Hill told ABC. “I simply testified to the truth of my experience. For her to say otherwise is not extending an olive branch, it’s accusatory,” she said.

“I don’t apologize. I have no intention of apologizing, and I stand by my testimony in 1991,” she concluded.

During a 2007 interview, Thomas

I’m sitting here, after reading this, and believe that Anita Hill started the “epiphany”, through the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, what true hypocrites those liberal social democrats really are. As that absolute farce that played out, it took awhile for it to sink in what the true motivations were for those malcontents really was. Just like Pat Schroeder schrill banter demanded women go throughout the military. Nevermind the unintended consequences like Lt. Kara Hultgren. Who hears for more women to be poured into the worst parts of the GWOT? (Oh yeah, refresh my memory, how many WOMEN FIREFIGHTERS were killed at the Trade Centers on 9/11?) There were the Olliver North Senate hearings where one senator berated LtCol. North about the worst terrorist he knew of; who kept him awake at night, and why did you charge the gov’t for a security system for your home, colonel? His answer was Osama bin Laden. The senator laughed at him. It was Al Gore.
To DESPISE Justice Thomas for ascending to the highest court in the land, without wrapping himself in the cloaks of heresy of the left wing black power movement, and instead, rely on personal achievement and moral courage, is the true lesson here. Mrs. Thomas should not expect an apology from someone like Ms. Hill. I would have expected her to thank her for vindicating her husband after all. I haven’t heard anything about Anita Hill for a long time, or for that matter Fawn Hall, Admiral Poindexter, Eugene Hasenfus or Bud McFarlan. Lay the rock back down where you found it and don’t pick it up for another 20+ years. Please pardon my mixing of metaphors, but let _______ them climb back down that hole they crawled out of. Saddle up and move on please.

Please get your facts straight. Oliver North did not mention Osama Bin Laden in the testimony you refer to and Al Gore Jr wasn’t part of that hearing. He was being questioned by an attorney for the committee and the terrorist in question was Abu Nidal.

We have to get rid of political parties. There is no other choice at this point. We need everyone to start acting like human beings talking to their neighbors for the good of this nation once again. The disgusting way we treat each other may even put is on the verge of civil war. If we had no D or R on the ballot, people would have to think for themself and couldn’t automatically have kneejerk hate for their neighbor who happened to be in the wrong political party. It has gotten out of hand.

I think Ginny Thomas should have considered the source, anticipated the reaction she got, and left it alone. I just don‘t think I’d call someone who lied about my husband and tried to ruin his career, no matter how many years had gone by.

I wonder what prompted her to do that. This story seems incomplete.

As I recall, the entire episode involved a reference to a pubic hair on a Coke can. That is hardly sexual harassment even if it happened, although as I recall, all other employees in the office doubted the story. It was low and dirty politics from top to bottom. I’m fed up with the whole thing starting with the Bork nomination to the latest reference to some silly college episode about Aqua Buddha. Give me a break. We will never get real leadership in this country if we keep acting like pigs in a mud puddle. Why would anyone bother talking to Hill so many years later? Why would they leave a voice mail? Why would Hill give it to authorities? Have people gone mad?

The chronology of the events never supported the claims made by Ms. Hill’s purported friends. Those of us that carefully watched the entire proceeding and then followed the carefully chronicled chain of events (no FOX present notwithstanding) were quite certain of two things:

    1) Somebody did some rather bazaar things that might have risen to the level of sexual harassment, and

    2) Based on the well documented chronology of when that occurred vs. when Ms. Hill and Mr. Thomas worked together the event took place sometime between 9-11 months earlier.

Ms. Thomas enjoyed the fame and notoriety that went with her “go along ride” but the Books that chronicled the events carefully have never left any doubt that Justice THOMAS was not the man who harassed her. The man who did was likely a partner of the law firm she worked at, but clearly could NOT have been THOMAS.

Anyone that believes otherwise just never researched the historic records, which include employment documentation that dosn’t put the two together at the time the event purportedly occurred.

Hill should apologize and she knows she should. Bearing a false witness is the same today as it was 20 years earlier.

I don’t agree with the approach Mrs. Thomas used. However, I think she and Justice Thomas are owed an apology. I remember the hearings and the Testimony and it was awlful. At first I thought it was true but as time went on it was clear that it was not. Thank God that justice was done in the end and Justice Thomas was confirmed to the Highest Court of the Nation.

Makes me wonder. To dig up a thing neigh on 20 years after the fact, hell even the statue of limitations has passed on accused sexual harassment. Pointless. My first thought is it was political but… well who is running for what? Who wants to look good in the eyes of the votes?

Speaking of which, got my early voting done today so I don’t need to worry about who wants to sling mud at who (for a while anyway).

Knowing a little about liars, sex addiction and harassment, I have a few thoughts. The person who believes Hill’s accusations is Ginny Thomas. The one who can’t live with the lie is the one living with the liar because she knows him better than anyone else. There is no need for an apology for something you are certain never happened and which failed to derail the Thomas appointment.

Political leanings aside, I believe Hill. That call was creepy at best. But so were the accusations. I can almost hear the argument at the Thomas residence. Having been so vilified, I can also understand why she handed the recording to the authorities. No way to trust how the Thomas’ would play out the call. No she said, she said, he said. Going public is the best defense.

Except, Helen, that Ms. Hill‘s attempted derailment of Justice Thomas’ appointment actually DID happen, laced with false accusations and blatant lies. And that is what Mrs. Thomas is seeking an apology for.

Your statement, “There is no need for an apology for something you are certain never happened and which failed to derail the Thomas appointment,” tells me you are confused about the story. The “something” you refer to is the alleged harassment, but Mrs. Thomas would not be calling Anita Hill for an apology for the harassment; it should be the other way around. If the allegations were true, what would be the point in Mrs. Thomas calling Anita Hill seeking an apology for the harassment Hill suffered at the hands of Clarence Thomas? The whole idea is ridiculous. “My husband sexually harassed you and you need to apologize!” What!?

On the other hand, if Mrs. Thomas was not certain that the alleged harassment never took place, she would be either seeking an apology from her husband, or seeking to apologize to Ms. Hill on behalf of her husband.

No, Mrs. Thomas is asking Ms. Hill to apologize for attacking her husband’s reputation without just cause. And Mrs. Thomas does not believe Hill’s accusations.

But, of course, you believe Anita Hill because you are confused and not thinking clearly.

Actually, it was just the opposite of a carefully calculated smear campaign. I happened to be off work for a few weeks so was able to watch the hearing in it’s entirety, Senate staffers were sent out to question people who worked with Thomas and they were guarenteed they would remain anonymous. So Hill, being the good little lefty she is, made some fairly outragious claims comfortable in the fact that they would never be attributed to her. When it looked like Thomas was a shoe in for ratification, a Mettsenbaum staffer leaked Hill’s claims in order to sabotage the proccess. Now Hill had two choices, ruin her carreer by admitting she made her claims up, or double down and make even worse accusations under oath that she neglected to mention in her original statement. A fact that more than one senator found disturbing. She was asked more than once why these “new facts” werent present in her original statement, A question she never adequately answered. Remember, 12 other female staffers of Thomas‘ were witnesses at the hearing and eveyone said Thomas’ office door was always left open when he was alone with a female staffer and NONE of the twelve had ever heard either directly or through the company grapevine that Thomas ever acted inapropriately. Hill even followed Thomas to a different job as a staffer after all this harrassment supposedly happened. There was also testimony from a number of witnesses that Hill was furious that Thomas married a white woman.
As a side note, this was my first exposure to Arlen Spectre and I must say he was brilliant. He became one of my favorite senaters there for a while, but sadly this hearing was the exception rather than the rule when it came to him. In fact he was so good, he was the main target of “The Year of the Woman” the dem strategy, that failed miserably. to replace all those good ole boys on the republican side of the hearing panel with democratic women “who got it”

This is nonsense. Both of these women are out of line. No one can force an apology from another. A genuine apology comes from a realization that you harmed someone and you want to make it good.
