FCC Chair ‘Calling CEOs’ to Garner Support for Net Neutrality

Democrats’ net neutrality proposal is entering its home stretch and members of the party have a clear message for Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chair Julius Genachowski — don’t screw this up. The Hill reports:
Democrats allied with FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski are working to put public pressure on [FCC commissioner Michael] Copps as the net-neutrality vote draws near.
Genachowski needs Copps to vote for his plan during a commission meeting on Tuesday if the rules are to pass.
As a result, Democrats who support the plan are pushing this message in the media: If Copps doesn‘t vote for Genachowski’s plan, the consequences will reverberate all the way up to the White House. They are arguing that the damage could even hurt President Obama.
A prominent Democrat close to the White House said it this way on Friday: “If Copps votes no on Tuesday, he’d be handing the president a huge loss at a time when the Democrats should have a big win.”
“Voting no…would be snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory and would be giving the Republicans a huge win,” the source said.
So-called “net neutrality” has been a controversial campaign pledge the Obama administration has worked to implement. But Copps‘ support for more stringent regulation and a potential ’no‘ vote threatens to derail Democrats’ plans.
As the debate amongst the FCC commissioners will end in a vote Tuesday, Democrats on Capitol Hill are keeping a close eye on the process, warning that the slightest mix-up could spoil the proposal. During a floor speech Saturday, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., — an ardent supporter of net neutrality — condemned FCC chair Genachowski for being too concerned with the interests of the industry.
During his statements, Franken said he is “concerned when I hear that the chairman of the FCC is calling the CEOs of companies they are supposed to be regulating, seeking their public endorsement of his net neutrality proposal.” Franken, like Copps, is urging Genachowski to make the proposal’s regulations even more stringent before the agency votes on it Tuesday.
“I sincerely hope that the FCC will make significant improvements before then,” he said.
He also said the FCC commissioners should “think long and hard before they vote to approve a proposal that could actually make things worse for all Americans.”
The White House weighed in on the debate last week. Spokesman Matt Vogel suggested that President Obama believes Genachowski’s proposal “constitutes an important step in preventing abuses and continuing to advance the internet as an engine of productivity growth and innovation.”
But Republicans are working to block the Democrats’ proposal, re-introducing an amendment that would ban the FCC from using government funding to adopt or implement any net neutrality regulations. In addition, the two sitting Republican FCC members have questioned whether new neutrality regulations are even necessary.
“We are concerned that both factual and legal conclusions may have been drawn before the process has begun,” they said, adding that the Commission should not adopt rules “in an effort to alleviate the political pressures of the day, if the facts do not clearly demonstrate that a problem needs to be remedied.”

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 12:26amThis is pretty typical liberal ploy. They put one innocent sounding name in the headline and pretend that’s all that the bill does. Recently, we saw this with the Dream Act. The Democrats spread their propaganda that the Dream Act was about illegals who graduated high school or join the military. If you actually read the bill, you realize that it’s backdoor amnesty for millions of illegals. Old relatives would also have gotten amensty. Anyone who even applied under the Dream Act couldn’t be deported for 6 years. It was a 6 year hiatus on deportations and Mass Amnesty for millions.
Now, you see idiots like JZS starting the whole debacle over again. The take the party talking point and post it all over the internet even though it completely ignores the meat of the bill. It’s NOT just about internet service providers not favoring their content. That’s the liberal talking point on Net Neutrality (just like the Dream Act talking points were that it was only amnesty for HS graduates and military). Anyone who watches Beck has seen hours of footage of the net neutrality people talking about all the things net neutrality would do (in their words, not Beck’s…he just plays the videos).
Look what Chavez is doing in Venezuela THIS WEEK regarding the internet to get a glimpse of what the socialists want for America. Scary, scary stuff. It sounds so warm and fluffy if you have tunnel vision to the liberal talking points. It scares you to the bottom of your soul when you see what socialists want to do with the internet. Of Chavez just wants to “protect” the citizens from prostitution and drugs and other bad things……….what a nice guy!

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 12:12amBefore everybody gets worked up about this with false ideas, let’s be clear on the issue. “Net neutrality” means that NO ONE, not the government, not service providers, and deny you access to any website on the web. China does not have net neutrality: the government restricts what websites you can see. North Korea does the same. Net neutrality is about freedom of anyone, with any service provider, to access any website they chose.
The alternative is that you internet service provider gets to decide what website you can access. Without net neutrality, service providers can decide what websites you can access, based on whether they profit or not from giving you that access. Want to have unlimited access? Then you have to pay extra.
Net neutrality guarantees your freedom to see anything on the net. Lack of net neutrality means that your service provider decides what you can access on the net. Look it up. This is a question of whether we want to be like China, with internet access limited to what the government wants you to see (in our case, service providers) or whether you have the liberty to see whatever you choose.

JZS, the Internet is not a right because it costs money to run. Someone worked to put up the lines, and someone works to keep everything going.
The Internet IS A COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISE, and as such, those who own the equipment used to connect to it – i.e. the Internet Service Providers – get to allow or deny access to whomever they like. Freedom means I don’t have to sell you jack, or allow you access to anything I own.
Further, you don‘t ensure that government doesn’t control the media by allowing them to regulate it.
It’s about time for those pitchforks.

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 5:36amThe problem here is not “Net Neutrality” as defined in a simplified way as forbidding, for instance, an ISP that has it’s own PPV service from slowing down packets from a “Netflix-type” streaming service because they‘ compete for viewers with the ISP’s service.
The necessary legislation or regulations to ensure such would take up only a few pages and could be easily read and comprehended by anyone with an understanding of basic internet tiering and networking practices. It would NOT require another thousand-page-plus monstrosity.
It’s what ELSE is included in this stinker they want to enact that has absolutely nothing to do with the stated purpose that is the problem.
It’s like passing a bill titled “The Puppy and Child Protection Act” that says in the first sentence it is against the law to be cruel to puppies and children, followed by 2,000 pages of legislation that is actually an outrageous usurpation of individual freedoms by the government.
That they refuse to even consider passing/enacting a simple rule/regulation/law concerning ONLY tiering & networking non-discrimination to prevent abuse of the kind I mentioned above, AND NOTHING ELSE, proves that once again the Progressive radicals are up to their same old tricks of removing freedom while paying off political allies.
Beware; They are determined to seize control of, or destroy the ability for us to use when it’s needed, any and every form of mass communication they can. It is essential if they are to succeed with their revolution. When things start collapsing, they must be the only voice left for people to rally to and the only source of information so that they can spread their propaganda without contradiction from dissenting voices.
They are in a quandary, however. They and their plans have been unmasked far, far too early. Now, instead of destroying us as a nation and a free people, any attack they launch will only serve to strengthen and spread our resistance while unifying us around the principles set forth by the Founding Fathers.
Far from facing a nation filled with sheep and sleeping drones, they now face something completely different. The Progressive radicals now find themselves playing the role of Darth Vader facing We the People as Obi-Wan Kenobi; “You can’t win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.”
Spread the word. Tell everyone you can get to listen. Organize. Plan. Gather food, clean water, weapons, and ammo. Just like the old British WW2 “Home Guard”, every neighborhood needs to be organized with plans in place for communications, defense, emergency evacuation locations identified, and food/water distribution systems set up. When they come in after the troubles start to tell you; “We’re here to save you!“ you can answer ”From what? We’re fine, go away before we become annoyed.”

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 6:28amJZS…while this net business seems all neutral, there is something that is missing. The National Broadband Plan. This piece of crapola is basically this. The Obama admin decried that broadband must be brought into every household in America. They consider broadband an infrastructure issue. The kicker is this, the government then would be the only arbiter of the connective tissue needed to access the net, thereby becoming the sole source of all information. All ISPs would be required to obtain leases to access this broadband network. Wireless devices are gobbling up more bandwith everyday; why the switch to digital over analog for TV stations…RFID. With so many analog bands available, it leaves plenty of upconverting bandwith for RFID chips. These chips are being used in all sorts of applications from foods to tires to pets and people. Wifi signals are easier to hijack and so any information you send via wifi the government will little problem acquiring. If the Government is the sole source of this connective tissue, then tell me, how much truth will there be? They don’t like what you say…poof, your access is denied, or better still, here’s the gateway to state sponsored-approved propaganda. No thanks! Give me good old Comcast or AOL. Posted on December 20, 2010 at 3:32pmThe sales pitch for a “progressive” (they should really call themselves Stalinist for accuracy) power grab is ALWAYS couched in “helpful” terms, but has little to do with the actual purpose. Obamie let the cat out of the bag a while back, though. Well, he confirmed what most already knew, but this may be a newsflash for you:
“Look: when Social Security was passed, it applied to widows and orphans, and it was a very restricted program, and over time, that structure that was built ended up developing into the most important social safety net that we have in our country. The same is true on every piece of progressive legislation, every bit of progress that we’ve made. … But the point was that we had created a structure, we had put a framework in place, that allowed us then to continue to make progress. That‘s what we’ve done over the last 18 months. That‘s what I expect we’re gonna keep on doin‘ as long as I’ve got the capacity to do it, as long as I’m President of the United States.”

The neos want it too, but they don’t want to risk making big waves when time is running out, and the Repubs are set to gain control of the House in Jan.: “Voting no…would be snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory.” It’s a matter of how fast you want to go as a radical, and whether you are willing to make big waves when all eyes are on you. It is bad enough that we have had information scrubbed from the net .. we do not need the government controlling what information we are “allowed” to have …. once again call and email now!

Report Post »Quite honestly, I look forward to this final screw in of these screw ups. There is nothing that will rally more to the polls against these trolls than controls on the Internet. This is something every kid that digitizes can and will relate too. Already, the attempts at gagging net traffic fills the news with much of it heading to the courts. Let this Left Gov Gag. In turn, they will get left out again, gagged at the polls. This is the one issue that can and will supersede the HealthCare insanity. We need debate, can we not simply do without the FCC along with the IRS. They simply invite a total rethink of it all. Thanks to this Administration, change and hope will return to America, because they create the need to reverse their hell bent, godless course.

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 5:30amHey CATB
Hate to rain on your parade but telephone calls and emails are not going to take the country back at this point. The powers in control pretty much ignore the will and/or wishes of the American people at this point. They have no fear of us because they know all we do is talk tough i.e. talk radio, etc. They are not threatened in the least by us. Bottom line…anything short of force ain’t going to cut it. You have to put the fear of God in them.

Report Post »They don’t listen to us, but will we listen to them? Obama has donned his bipartisan cloak. How many voters will he fool this time?

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 7:18amThe “net-neutrality” act that’s up for a vote by the FCC is the first step of NEUTRALIZING the Obama and liberal progressive opposition. It’s the first of many moves to circumvent the American Constitutional right of free speech. Once they get their foot in the door, on this one, many more will soon follow. Obama’s plan to “ fundamentally transform ” the United Sttes of America includes the “neutralization” of the American Congress and Senate. If he has his way, his czars and ministers will make the laws that best suit and promote his political agenda. Make no mistake about it, this is just another part of the power grab for complete control of the government by taking it out of the hands of the American people to transform our democracy into a totalitarian communist state.

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 7:23amThere are no problems except this bald faced attempt to do away with the right of free speech. They “pass’ this, it is time for action by the states.
Report Post »The criminals in support of this “law” need to be arrested, by the military. All the criminals, including the marxists in congress. Otherwise the military also has “forgotten” their oath to “preserve and defend the constitiution of the Unite States, against all enemies, foreign or DOMESTIC”. Just how much more do they need to realize that our greatest enemy is domestic.

Right now, Race Pimp bigot Al Tawana Sharpton is taking his marching orders from the Kenyan Moslem to attack Rush.
Make no mistake about that.
