‘Fed Up’: Here’s Why Some Massachusetts Residents Are Considering Secession

Humarock, Massachusetts Residents Consider Seceding From Town of Scituate Because of Limited Representation, High Taxes, and Alleged Excessive Police Force

(Photo: CBS)

Residents of Humarock, Massachusetts are so upset with their governing authorities that they are considering seceding from the town, according to reports.

The resentment seemed to boil over around the 4th of July, when residents say the authorities were out-of-control in enforcing their ban on bonfires.

“That was a full military operation… I mean hummers up and down the beach, state police helicopters, horseback, bomb squad, [and] a command post up the center,” said Fred Hayden, who owns a summer home in Humarock.

CBS continues:

During Independence Day celebrations on July 3, State Police troopers were called in to help maintain order in the mostly senior-citizen community. A 70-year-old man says they used excessive force when arresting him, leaving his arms bruised and wrists bleeding.

“Every time they talk to you it’s in a threatening fashion,” long-time resident Emory Langlolies said during Sunday’s meeting.

Langlolies described his experience with law enforcement on the 3rd [of July] as overkill. He claims he was playing patriotic music when town officials marched onto his private property and unplugged his stereo. Langlolies says an officer then crushed the plug to keep him from starting the music again.

“They told my wife, ‘we’re going to come back to clean this mess up. We’re going to charge you $300 an hour and we’re going to take our time doing it,’” Langlolies recounted.

At a meeting with roughly 100 people, one resident said the town is seeing a “slow deterioration” of its constitutional rights.

WBZ-TV has more information, and video of the meeting:

And it isn’t just the police force that residents seem to have a problem with.

Another resident said that, despite the fact that they pay their taxes and fines, “The sidewalks haven’t been fixed. There’s potholes in the roads. They’re not even trimming the bushes back from the sidewalk so you have to walk out into the street.”

Another analogized their taxes to donations, saying they may as well be a “donor community” for all their taxes are worth.

CBS continues:

Typical of the Bay State’s revolutionary spirit, Humarock taxpayers are asking for more representation at the Town Council. When a group attended a meeting of the Town’s Selectmen on July 10, they were not permitted to speak. Now they plan to write letters to town officials, as well as complaints to the State Police, the Attorney General, and Governor Deval Patrick.

“What are our rights?” one resident asked.  “I mean we pay $9,000 in taxes, [and] what are we getting for it?”

A related story for you,we have a progressive pig in Michigan, one of many but this little piggy is one Debbie Stabenow and one of her bright ideas which she shares with the Marxist POS president is she wants our electricity rates to go up by 30%. She actually said that publicly, why anyone would vote for an A hole like that is beyond me.You have to give the pig points though she‘s telling you up front how much she’s going to screw you over.

Deb Stabenow …didn’t her hubby get caught in some prostitute ring? Oh yeah, this little tidbit,”Senator who once voted to establish the Senate Office of Public Integrity chose to turn a blind eye to her husband’s criminal actions, putting him, partisan election interests and the family bank account above Michigan residents and campaign promises”. Yup, she’s a doozie.

And the Stars shall fall from Heaven! Makes ya wonder if the US is heaven on Earth and we have cities that are called stars. Does it mean Literally or Figuratively? Anyway, does anyone see how WE THE PEOPLE could be Worried about whats to come? If ya ask me, if they can do it prior to the 4th, don’t you think if there was a real disaster, national emergency, or a POS POTUS declaring martial law, how one may worry about whats about to happen? Just saying people we really need to watch whats coming. obama is a SNAKE in the grass, and I wouldn’t trust him at all! Martial Laws Coming, and I have a feeling when the Election turns bad for him; his people will be ready to implement chaos in the streets. Not because their mad, NO; instead its all about how it looks to the public! Meaning, they riot and create chaos, so obama doesn’t look bad. He’ll say its to protect people, instead its just the oppisite. It’s to stay in power!…. Look at Assad, Syrians want him gone and yet everything he’s doing is to stay in power. Now look at obama “the micro manager”, do you think he’s going to walk away with his tail between his legs? NOPE it won’t happen! He thinks he’s God! Thats the part that scares me the worse! And don’t forget your the Dictator of the Greatest Country, Best Military, Best Everything, so really think a dictator is going to just walk away? Nope, it won’t happen! Unless Babylon has a New Home for Him in Iraq!….

Yes let us keep ASKING for more representation and WRITING LETTERS. It hasnt helped in the past why exactly do you think it will help now??? The machine is out of control and they are preparing for our anger everyday. The more angry we get the more prepared they are to push us down and DEMAND more OBEDIENCE. There is a way to change things. Thomas Jefferson told us so….

“If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty”….. “what country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. (Hence the second amendment) The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it’s natural manure.”

Now is the time to step up. Or choose ar Thomas Jefferson stated so clearly ” lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty”

The American people have the choice. We are divided, I see hell coming.

We, in southeast MI, are now very limited on our fires. You have to get a permit listing what you are burning, and sign a piece of paper stating that the fire is no more than 3‘ x 3’ x 3′. If there is no permit, they will show up to put it out for you, for a small $2000 fee. Not to mention, Gov. Gandholm passed a law stating if you don’t have a handrail on your porch, mine is 13″ off the ground, it is consider blight. You will be ticketed.

It ain’t any better here in TX. I’m the only conservative on my block, unless there are some closet ones. I have a Glenn Beck sticker on my front door and back of my car, fly my flag on my back fence post and on a tall pole in front. I’d fly the flag upside down but apparently it gives a couple Viet Nam vets flashbacks, so we refrain. I have a little code violation twit who loves to hit us for every little thing. First it was my tree out front, hung over the sidewalk and wasn’t 14 feet off the ground. Then it was stuff in my driveway (which she would have had to get out of her little truck and walk up the driveway to see) wasn’t 6 inches off the ground. I had lumber stacked flat on the concrete and cinder blacks also stacked flat so rodents didn’t have anywhere to hide – we live near a green belt and have a rat and ferrel cat problem. So I fixed that by using the cinderblocks and lumber as shelves….now the rats have somewhere to hide and they get in my garage and eat holes in my bottled water to get at the water. Then Saturday I got another one…limbs sticking into the alley (closer than one foot away from alley) and trees not trimmed to 14 feet off the ground. I had 3 branches sticking through the fence and two little volunteer trees in the corner (not closer than one foot). I sent her a nasty gram. These local officials have to justify their jobs somehow.

Who wouls want to listen to you at city council meetings. They have busin ess to take car of. Here in Oklahoma I pay $1,300 in taxes for 10 acres and a 2 story sandstone home. Our trooper can’t afford Hummers – they drive Dodge Chargers or 4-WD Ford Expeditions. We can‘t afford a horse patrol or fancy command post’s. On the 4th they were out looking for drunks. You only will see a trooper writeing a ticket. You have to cll our law enforcenment people or you will never see them . The Constitution is just a piece of paper, it has no power to stop tyranny. It is up to “we the people” to protect our liberties. I don’t have the right to own a gun because the Constitution says so, I have the right to own a gun because I have the inalienable right to freedom given to me by my creator. If the Constitution was destroyed in a fire tomorrow, that does not take any of my rights away since it does not grant me my rights. We need to start defending our basic human rights, not the Constitution. The Constitution can be edited and modified, my rights can not.

About half of America is neither just nor moral. In general, look at a “red versus blue state” map to get a perspective of what’s left of Old America. The snots on both coasts and up Illinois/Minnesota way sneer at “flyover country,” where the old values still obtain.

“…the principle for which we contended is bound to reassert itself, though it may be at another time and in another form.”

An honest view of history – shows us that we are at that time, the form is taking shape, and the reasons are rightfully being “reasserted”.

We have Von Ormy,TX right up the road from here and they just approved measures to CUT property taxes in Obama’s depression. Someone from my state health department called me and told me to stop selling fresh eggs from my pet chickens. He left a message on my home phone and I deleted the number. The egg sales pay for the food the chickens eat and I get to sit in my porch swing and watch them dismantle my garden getting all the bugs. I love my chickens and what other pet will pay for itself? Boy, just wait until they learn we also drink our goat milk RAW! I wonder if they will Google Earth my green houses I have to grow vegies all year round and give away what I can’t eat…which is quite a bit…..even after the goats, chickens and sheep get their share.

My mom moved into a rural area in Missouri in 1972. They were the first ones to move into their “subdivision.” There was no homeowner’s association, which is how they liked it. They had a well that tapped into an underground spring that produced the best tasting water I’ve ever had…as good as any bottled water. Then they got young upstarts into the neighborhood as people either died or moved more rural. Each lot was 1/2 acre, so mom and dad bought the one next to them. They are on a corner lot, with the subdivision road in front and a county road on the side, backed up to someone else’s acre of land. First they came in and said the well water wasn’t good enough, they had to have city water. I’m sorry, you have to have your water chlorinated. No more $2 a month to maintain the well system, now you’re paying $27 if you use none, and so much every 1,000 gallons. Now the Neighborhood committee met and decided everyone should pay $200 a year to maintain the road. They won’t do it by running foot of property, because the head of the committee has 3 or 4 lots worth, more than others. You have 60 days to pay, or they put a lien on your house, which my parents own free and clear. You no longer own property in America. If you think you do, try not paying your taxes or doing anything you want to on your little piece of city property.

There is no legal mechanism for a state to secede. Most scholars believe that the right to secede was inherent when the states originally joined the union. The argument is that no state, which was sovereign within its own borders, would have ever given up so much power to the government unless they knew they could leave the relationship union if it became intolerable. That argument was put to rest with the Civil War, which Lincoln said was all about preserving the union.

13 states (that word means “sovereign country” in English *) did so legally in 1861, but Abraham Lincoln turned his back on the US Constitution, and outnumbering the 13 states 3:1 in military manpower, killed 300,000 Southern troops and tens of thousands of civilians in forcing them back into the union.

Yes, there is a “legal mechanism,” but might makes right, where Washington, DC, is concerned.

The US Federal government may in the not too distant future find that that road runs both ways.

(* That’s why they are not called “provinces.”)

“The argument is that no state, which was sovereign within its own borders, would have ever given up so much power to the government unless they knew they could leave the relationship union if it became intolerable.”

Right, Tommyguns… that’s why the federal government was accorded the very limited Enumerated Powers, (coin money, make treaties with foreign powers, establish a postal service &c.) and ALL OTHER rights remained with the sovereign states.

“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” (“States” was capitalized in all instances.)

The 10th Amendment specifically provides for these separation of powers, which have been steadily eroded, encroached upon, by Washington, the most heinous example of which, leading to 600,000 American deaths, was given to us by Lincoln.

I believe one would classify the War for Southern Indpendence, 1861-1865, very “serious”.

Its a rediculous proposition to deny the legitimacy of the right of secession, its what founded our nation in 1776 – we seceeded from the British Empire and exerted our independence.

In fact, the first serious threat to the “Union”, came not from the southern states in 1861 – but the northeastern states (Massachusetts being one of them) who actually went forward with secession during the opening stages of the War of 1812. Forward to the point of disallowing their state militaries from participating in the war – which is why the British concentrated on points south of Boston. The northeastern states vehemently opposed war with Britain, as it would halt their shipping profits via partnerships with Mother England.

Secession worked in thier favor, as the Congress conceeded to their demands of “bounty” (ie . subsidy) to make up for lost profits due to the war – so they remained with the Union – and lent their militaries to the effort.

Secession worked again as a legitimate threat in the 1830′s , as the southern states (primarily South Carolina) threatened to leave over disparate tarriffs and those being 100% paid as “bounties” to northern interests ( primarily shipping – read the above 1812 dilemma). Congress conceeded, and did not impose the rediculously high, selectively levied, tarriff.

A brief history of secession in America – enjoy

Thanks for all of your informative comments. I am embarrassed by the fact that I hadn’t realised the Civil War could be considered as an attempt at secession, but it does make sense to me now.

Interesting that onwe or two people have pointed out that “state” could be interpreted as an independent entity, like “sovereign nation”. Many countries are federations of states, of course. Brazil and Australia come to mind. Not sure about Brazil, but I do know there have been (semi-serious) secession movements in Australia, specifically the enormous state of Western Australia (more than 3.5 times the size of Texas) who have talked about seceding from time to time.

“Legal” is a relative term, as it is defined by, you guessed it, those who hold the Power of Ultimate Force. “Those”, of course, do not consist of the People, but the “Authorities”, meaning the Government, whether small “g” or large “G”. As others mentioned, the implied right of succession was essentially squashed by Lincoln, who despite his touted historical perfectionism, was anything but perfect and a quite good tyrant in his own way. I do believe that two states firmly placed the option of succession directly into their Statehood agreements, Texas and Montana, but given the modern milieu, they probably would feel that Power of Ultimate Force coming down on them anyway. Sad to say, but just as Jesus would not recognize the Christianity of today as anything familiar that He and his followers had taught, our Founders and the people who lived in the USA two centuries ago wouldn’t recognize this government as anything they had fought for.

As far as specific language reserving the right to “seceede” being contained in State Constitutions, all State Constitutions reserved the explicit right of secession – prior to the WBTS.

One of the points of “Reconstruction” was adoption of new State Constitutions that specificly disallowed secession. Its a pretty nice exercise in reality to study the history, and various changes, of any State’s Constitution. More interesting is the changes in southern Constitutions forced by Reconstruction. In my own State, Tennessee, the Radical Republican Constitution of 1870 is still the basis of its government. I would dare David Barton or Glenn Beck to explore Article 11-section 14 of that Constitution – then try to credit that article on anyone but the Radical Republicans. Miltary enforcement of the Reconstruction Acts was only ended at the adoption of a “Reconstructed” Constitution.

All that being said, Texas – avoided having its Constitution changed during Reconstruction, hence it retains its ORIGINAL right of secession. Therefore, Texas is the ONLY ‘Unreconstructed” State surviving – and I might add thriving.

They thrive on the power of confiscated money from the private sector. The power of the private sector, taxpayers that is, is in numbers. The problem with attaining critical mass in numbers is propaganda and ignorance. Only when the people in numbers have access to the truth and believe the truth will they have power over the government. Right now it’s the other way around. To starve the government tyrants you are going to have to move out of their reach.
