Feds Arrest Over 100 Mobsters in Largest Mafia Bust in FBI History

NEW YORK (AP) — More than 120 organized crime associates face charges including murder, extortion and narcotics trafficking in one of the largest Mafia crackdowns in FBI history, prosecutors announced Thursday.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said at a news conference Thursday in New York City that the 127 defendants include high-ranking members of the Gambino and Colombo crime families and the reputed former boss of organized crime in New England. All five of New York’s five major crime families were targeted.

The charges cover decades worth of offenses, he said, including “classic mob hits to eliminate perceived rivals,” a killing during a botched robbery and a double shooting in a barroom dispute over a spilled drink.

More than 100 of the defendants were arrested Thursday as some 800 federal agents and police officers made busts in several states. One person was arrested in Italy.

Other charges include alleged corruption among dockworkers who were forced to kick back a portion of their holiday bonuses to the crime families.

Holder called the arrests “an important step forward in our nation’s fight against organized crime.”

The crimes include two murders dating back 30 years, and another as recently as 2002. One of the defendants, among the scores arrested, is a former New York City police officer.

Authorities say the investigation was aided by informants who recorded thousands of conversations by suspected mobsters.

Luigi Manocchio, the reputed former head of New England’s Patriarca crime family, was arrested Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the U.S. attorney’s office in Providence said. An indictment accused him of collecting protection payments from strip club-owners. Also arrested was Thomas Iafrate, who worked as a bookkeeper for strip clubs and set aside money for Manocchio, prosecutors said.

The takedown was the result of multiple investigations. Federal probes aided by mob turncoats have decimated the families’ ranks in recent years and have resulted in lengthy prison terms for several leaders.

On Friday, a federal judge in Brooklyn sentenced John “Sonny” Franzese, 93, to eight years in prison for extorting Manhattan strip clubs and a pizzeria on Long Island.

In October, Mafia turncoat Salvatore Vitale was sentenced to time served after federal prosecutors praised his total betrayal of his own crime syndicate – and after he apologized to the families of his victims. Authorities said he had a hand in at least 11 murders, including that of a fellow gangster in the fallout from the infamous Donnie Brasco case.

The evidence provided after his arrest in 2003 helped decimate the once-fearsome Bonanno organized crime family, Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Andres said.

Associated Press writer Eric Tucker in Providence, R.I., contributed to this report.

I was thinking, what a waste of money to jail him for 8 years. Why not put him under house arrest? Then he still has to pay for rent, bills, food, clothing, medical, etc. Now we get to pay for that.

You are confusing justice as taught versus justice in reality. Justice in America is defined by who and how much you are willing to pay to get that justice—when you don’t pay up, you go to jail. Never, ever fall victim to believing there is any justice at all—the justice system and our government are run for and by the bankers, real simple so don‘t make it any more complicated than that because it isn’t.

Because once a system goes to shiit – the mafia becomes the only way of doing business. It becomes the free enterprise system within. The Government bureaucrats become anointed or appointed CEO figureheads with shares and interests in a carrot and stick game of graft and profit. Kinda like today’s Unions for sure!

It is fantastic the Feds are bringing the Italian mob down as they have for quite some time. But don’t you think they should start concentrating on groups such as the Bloods, Russian mafia, Latino gangs? Maybe it’s just me but I dont remember the traditional Mafia killing or terrorizing civilians. I have a feeling the mafia is an easy prey with no threat of violence or retaliation.

How about the gangs on along the Mexican border? I guess busting Mafia types is easier and safer for the Agents. After all, they are less apt to resist arrest with machineguns than the street gangs.

No, I don’t thats it, because if it were, they would be going after the Federal Reserve and banking system, the most corrupt thugs in the history of mankind. No, this is just a dog and pony show to make average ignorant lemming Americans to believe that they are doing their job. They won’t go after anyone that could cause “political” incorrectness. As another poster pointed out, they are going after these guys because they are white males for European descent; they won’t go after anyone other group, and certainly will not go after their thug mob bosses—the corrupt federal reserve and corrupt banking oligarch.

I guess Obama wants to help out the Jamacian/Somolian/Black Mafia. He wants to give them equal access to the New York crime syndicate. Equality in everything. These whites have been unfairly controlling the shakedowns of businesses in New York for to long!!!

The mob owns the Unions…..the unions own obams/soetoro……as evidenced by his own words….during his campaign for president…..as a Usurper.

This adminidtration and his thugocracy…removed the figureheads and hit men…..from the Crime Syndicate that helped get obama “elected”….so that OBAMA Inc. can take over….as head of the UNIONS.

They are holding the suspects at Fort Hamilton (US Army Post).

Anybody else think it’s creepy to involve the US Army in civilian law enforcement? Is this the “crisis” to set a precedent?

Maybe I’m being paranoid and I hope I am. But the Marxists in charge have given me plenty of reason to think the worst.

I hope they got Bad guys

The John Warner Defense Authorization Act, mentioned above, gives the president the authority to declare martial law and take control of National Guard troops without state governor authorization. If applied, Warner would x-out the entire Constitution and Bill of Rights. It would also violate Posse Comitatus.

NSP 51 and HSPD 20 (the National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive) allow the president to declare a “national emergency” for any reason without congressional approval. These directives would result in the suspension of constitutional government and the militarization of justice and law enforcement. NSPD 51 supersedes the National Emergency Act and supposed congressional oversight. If applied, the Constitution would be null and void.

The Military Commissions Act trashes habeas corpus and allows the government to detain anyone (including U.S. citizens) by declaring them enemy combatants. It also allows torture and provides immunity for military and intelligence officials. The act violates the Sixth and Fourth Amendments, Article 1 Section 9, Clause 2 (covering habeas corpus) of the Constitution. It also violates the Geneva Convention.

Finally, the long-standing FISA (Foreign Intelligence and Surveillance Act) allows the Obama administration to spy on any American without court approval. It provides a meaningless and phony court review and secret procedures and a worthless report to Congress.

Obama’s “national emergency” in response to a pandemic that is nothing for the sort is another example of the executive wantonly violating the Constitution. It does not matter if the details of the so-called emergency declaration concern the bureaucratic operation of government. It is a violation of the principles our founders had in mind when they formulated our (now mostly moribund) constitutional republic.

Only the American people, through their representatives in Congress, can declare a national emergency.

Since they are cleaning all the crimminals out of New York, maybe they can now go down to Washington, and arrest all the ones there too. They can start at the big house on Pennsylvania Avenue, and down the road at the big building with the dome on top.

@Nutthuggers… I think you’re on to something. I venture to add the Black Panthers to your list!! On a different note: How many billions of dollars in seized and frozen assets will the gov’t now have access to? I don’t believe this investigation is solely about getting these guys off the street it never is what it appears to be on the surface.

Ooops I inadvertantly clicked on “Report Post” to add to your comment on illegal immigrants or so I thought I was. It appears I reported your post. My apologies, hope this doesn’t cause any problems. I’m new here and just learning the ropes.

What I was responding to was your comment:
“I wish they showed the due diligence as this with illegal immigrants.”

My comment was: “Or the black panthers”.
