Feds Ban Carolina Man From Hunting Anywhere on Planet Earth

SALISBURY, N.C. (The Blaze/AP)– A North Carolina man has been banned from hunting anywhere in the world for two years as part of an agreement with federal authorities on charges that he illegally killed wildlife in Kentucky.Feds Ban Carolina Man From Hunting Anywhere on Planet Earth

The Salisbury Post reported Thursday that Rodney Poteat agreed to the deal in Kentucky last week. The Salisbury man declined comment.

Federal prosecutors said Poteat last November carried a 14-point white-tailed deer from Hart County, Ky., to his home without reporting the kill. He also pleaded guilty to transporting a dead bobcat without a non-resident hunting license.

He agreed to pay the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources $5,300 in restitution for fees he would have paid for hunting in the state between 2002 and 2011.

It was not his sentence to not hunt anywhere on Earth. This article was incomplete in its analysis of what actually happened. He was facing jail time and very large fines for his poaching crimes. He was given an offer to agree to these terms to avoid the punishments for his crimes and he took them. It was a voluntary agreement that he made to avoid the jail part of his sentence. If you can‘t do the time don’t do the crime.

It would be one thing if he could prove he was starving. But I doubt that could be proved. Poachers usually are driven by lust for trophy sized animals. Even if he could prove he was starving, killing the ‘Kings’ animals out of season, without paying the tax (license) would become rampant if it was permitted.

Just like the IRS, an ‘example’ has to be made.

They don’t have jurisdiction, but it wasn’t a sentence. It was an agreement he made to avoid jail time. I have no idea why they asked him not to hunt anywhere on the planet, they can’t enforce anything outside of the US, and if they tried to invalidate his plea deal because he hunted in Africa it wouldn’t fly.

Have you had a city or county “visioning for 2020” meeting in your area lately or in the past few years? If you have, I can guarantee that some where in the final doctument is a sovereignty clause. Is your city or county involved in “sustainable development” or “smart growth” ? If these terms are familiar to you, you need to do some study on Agenda 21 and LA21 and ICLEI. I sincerely believe that these are a major threat to our freedoms and many cities and counties with clueless politicians have already jumped on the band wagon because it is presented in such warm and fuzzy terms and comes with free grant monies with unelected NGO’s pulling the strings and making the laws for YOUR community. PLEASE educate yourselves on this issue!!!!! It is the local back-door approach to and framework for introducing international law at the local level. Educate yourselves on Agenda 21 if you cherish freedom and believe in the Constitution. Brother couldn’t agree more. Levies, fines and penalties are so unconstitutional it’s getting sick. the constitution says don’t quote me its not in front of me but along the lines of any type of penalty etc has to be commensurate with the act. The fines for everything is out of whack. how do you fine a person $400 for not wearing a seat belt, I know because I got one. Funny thing is I was wearing it, grey shirt grey seat belt and grey jeep. I went to fight it and was told I had to pay up front and if I lost the case I would also have to pay additional court costs. I know you are all saying what does this have to do w the above story? well its the fines? for what the 1,000.000 fish and game employees writing tickets to kids for drinking near a river? or maybe they find a 1/8″ long roach to boot. its all out of whack.

You don’t shoot a bobcat or a 14 pointer for food. It was trophy hunting. I speak as a hunter, from Kentucky. If you need to eat there are better selections than his choices. A yearling doe for example, or any yearling for that matter. And bobcats aren’t near numerous enough for subsistence hunting. My Dad was a Federal Game Warden for decades, and the crap stories poachers told him would make Obama blush for their sheer repetition. Everyone of them had the same stories… I was lost, I didn‘t know it wasn’t the season yet.. I didn’t know the season was closed. Hell, he would catch people trespassing on other peoples farms, and they would tell him ” well my (Pappy, Grandpappy, Uncle, Cousin, wife, you pick) used to hunt here all the time, so I can too!” My god as a child I could lie better than these people. Poachers are generally lazy, unimaginative rednecks who think that because they have a gun, they know how to hunt, and its their RIGHT to kill anything that takes their mind to kill. They are disrespectfull of others, and slovenly in their hygene. The Fish and Wildlife should have taken this guys guns, fishing rods, 4×4, and 4 wheeler ( cause he has them all, I guarantee it) That would be better than emasculating him, in his world.
And no I am not anti hunting, as I said I hunt…not as often as I would but as often as I can.

One of my favorite experiences as a child was going with our neighbor, who was in tough financial straits, hunting for a deer out of season. We drove in the pickup through the fields until he saw one, a doe, he got out of the truck, shot and killed it, quickly threw it in the back of the truck and raced home and into the barn where he butchered it. We ate venison for the next two weeks with every meal… it was all he had except for the potatoes and vegetables he grew. Man, was that venison GOOD! Venison with eggs for breakfast, venison sandwiches for lunch, stewed venison for dinner! I sure remember that…. mmmm mmmm good!

There are reasons for these laws and avid hunters are big sticklers for conservation. They understand the need to manage population levels to ensure the health of the species. Where I disagree with these laws is where it is about a person feeding their family (and by this I mean the poor, not someone looking for an excuse). The progressives have done their best to diminish Americans’ ability to provide for themselves. Case in point, the homeless guys in California who were sent to prison for catching a protected fish from the LA.Canal. The sentence is laughable, but it is enforceable. They cannot enforce the law in other countries but as it is a condition of his probation, all they need do is prove that he violated those restrictions. The Feds wouldn‘t be involved if he hadn’t crossed state lines, taking it out of the jurisdiction of the local/state authorities. The law is the law. If we don’t agree with the law, we still must obey it and we must work to have it changed.

I disagree. If a law attempts to limit or deter you from having a God given (or natural) right, it is not a valid law and you should not abide by it or defend any person who supports or abides by it. This is how we as a nation were able to put Japanese into camps like Hitler did the Jews and how 27 states were able to get away with forced sterilization laws for nearly a half century. When government does not serve to protect your rights it does not serve you at all and it doesn’t deserve your respect. The Constitution is the law of the land and it is not the bureaucrats in Washington that give us our rights and liberties!

I remember when I first started to hunt deeer in Ohio in the late 1970′s. It was buck only, and it had to have antlers at least 5 inches in length. Maybe 100 deer would be harvested in my county. Now, we can hunt from Oct to Feb. we can harvest 6 deer, only one a buck. If people were allowed to hunt anytime they wanted, King’s deer or not, then we would not have any deer for anyone to hunt. It took decades to bring back the deer from over hunting when people REALLY did have to hunt for food. Kings deer or not, man must use a little bit of common sense when hunting. In Ohio there are probably 400,000 in state hunters every year going after deer, not including out of staters. If these same 400,000 hunted anytime they wanted, there wouyld be no deer, whether they belonged to the king or not.

@ghostrider, what we need to do is limit hunting for sport in which only the rack is taken, or the backstrap, and let people who want to hunt for subsistence hunt when they want. If someone wants to go hunting just to kill, that shouldn’t be allowed and people who just want to hunt for the thrill of it should learn to fish and practice catch and release.

Oh, and don’t think that subsistence hunters would rid the world of game animals overnight. If you are able to clean a deer to 80 lbs of meat, it will provide a family of four with the protein they need for 40 days assuming each eats a half pound of meat every day . And after 40 straight days of deer they wouldn’t want to go right out and get another, they would go get some fish or fowl or even feral hog. Hell, they might even raise their own chickens. So in the end, a family of four would probably harvest 4-8 deer a year to provide them with all of their protein needs. That is usually well within the limit for 4 people in a single year in my state.

Whether these men were hunting for meat or trophy I don’t know, but subsistence hunting should be legal everywhere and at any time.

My father, who runs a production plant in Ar. had an employee who got caught by a game warden for shooting at a mechanical buck of a main HWY and was taken to jail. Got out and the very next night shot at the same mechanical buck in the exact same spot and of course there was a game warden watching that buck but I bet he never guessed he‘d be pickin’ up the same Dumb Ars!

They had their weapons confiscated, fined $1500 for each elk and lost their hunting priveledges for 6 years. They understood the penalty and said that is what they get for shooting blindly into the fog. By shooting blindly, they could have shat another hunter as there were several hunters in the area.

Im sure that’s one of the Centralists commandments, going all the way back to England:

Thou shalt not kill the King’s deer.

Just kidding, that was the first thought I had.
We have seasons and liscences and kill reporting in place for a reason. There is nothing wrong with being responsible stewards of our dwindling wildlife. Anyone going into the woods with a gun has a resposibility to uphold the laws involved with hunting. The only fine was what he would have otherwise had to pay, which is actually quite lenient. The worldwide ban seems a bit excessive and rather unenforcable, but in lieu of what poachers usually get, it seems a fair enough trade to me.

As long as no one had evidence of his hunting and he didn’t return to the states, you’re right. But he voluntarily signed the agreement to avoid a harsher sentence (possibly jail time). If he violates the agreement and is caught he could conceivably receive penalties in excess of the those for the original crime.

I understand why we it used to be seen as necessary to limit the hunting of animals back when people everywhere ate them as a staple and their numbers were rapidly declining. But it still is apalling to me that it is illegal to provide your family with food from nature, even when it wanders into your yard. On top of that, the number of deer in the US hit by cars every year is more than the total number of deer that were alive on this continent at the turn of the 20th century. So there is no need to regulate the hunting of deer except to ensure that most if not all people must rely on the commercial meat trade for their daily needs and I’m sure they back it up under the commerce clause like they are trying to do with healthcare.

Guess they don’t just want to rule US here in America now… They’re spreading their jurisdiction to the whole PLANET???

I think this rises to “cruel and UNUSUAL” punishment.

In this case I have to say the punishment exceeds the crimes, and is cruel and unusual punishment unless there is more to the story than anyone has been able to unravel yet.

Kind of like the left wanting to save the environment, or “save the world” when we only control a portion of it.

I guess that covers fishing as well…since that is “hunting” on/in water.

That’s a ridiculous penalty. It’s almost harsher than what one would receive for manslaughter.

People’s fettishes for animals needs to end, or we’re gonna have people marrying them in the future.

Hunting rights revoked for two years seems a bit light to me. It‘s not like he’s going to prison.
