UPDATE:
Sen Jim Inhofe (R-OK) and Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK) have responded with a letter to Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke.
ORIGINAL STORY BELOW.
A small Oklahoma town is enraged after Federal Reserve examiners told a hometown bank that it must remove crosses, Bible verses, and Christmas buttons from display because they could be offensive. The bank says the Fed told it the Christian paraphernalia violated federal bank regulations.
KOCO-TV reports:
Federal Reserve examiners come every four years to make sure banks are complying with a long list of regulations. The examiners came to Perkins [the town] last week. And the team from Kansas City deemed a Bible verse of the day, crosses on the teller’s counter and buttons that say “Merry Christmas, God With Us.” were inappropriate. The Bible verse of the day on the bank’s Internet site also had to be taken down. [...]
Specifically, the feds believed, the symbols violated the discouragement clause of Regulation B of the bank regulations. According to the clause, “…the use of words, symbols, models and other forms of communication … express, imply or suggest a discriminatory preference or policy of exclusion.”
The feds interpret that to mean, for example, a Jew or Muslin or atheist may be offended and believe they may be discriminated against at this bank. It is an appearance of discrimination.
Local residents were upset, with one woman calling it “absurd” while another man called it “ridiculous.”
The news station says the bank has contacted Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe (R) and U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas (R), as well as the Oklahoma Bankers association, for help.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 1:07pmThe feds have gone too far and everyone knows it. The elections of 11-02-10 prove this beyond any doubt. For years they have been trampling over our constitutional rights. They have bastardized our Constitution, misconstrued its meaning all in an effort to remove our freedoms and enslave us. What the fed either doesn‘t understand or doesn’t care is that the people have had enough. Demonstrations are occurring with not two or three hundred people but demonstrations in the hundreds of thousands. Next there will be acts of insurrection including violence. And if that doesn’t stop the fed intrusion then all out war will follow. This is not a threat, this is what history has told us repeatedly WILL happen. So it’s not a matter of if but when. I for one am curious as to which seemingly trivial assault against the people will be the final straw.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 2:10pmI believe the only way to stop the Fed is to march on Washington. Voting has not worked, and will never get rid of these traitors. Maybe a protest in the numbers of which no one has ever seen is called for. No violence needed, but rather our sheer numbers. I’d say a few million people could not be ignored, if we are at their office door.

DesertRose1960
Posted on December 17, 2010 at 2:57pm@Vangrungy, no, I’m not bitter. I’m just telling you what I experienced. And yes, I am Catholic. I was a Lector for about 15 years. I participated in numerous religious retreats, even giving some of the witness lectures, and yes, they knew my husband and children were Jewish.
Please explain to me why you pseudoconservatives always feel the need to tell people who don’t agree with them to leave the country? Your ilk does it on a regular basis, and it is often associated with the exercising of Constitutionally guaranteed rights. Freedom of Speech and Association seem to mean that you are free to express your ideas and to associate with like-minded folks, and I am free to espouse your opinions and to vote with your party and if I want to hold a different opinion or join a different party, well, then I need to leave the country I was born in or I need to keep my mouth shut or I deserve to be beaten or I’m just an un-American, unpatriotic Nazi/Socialist/Fascist/Communist.
Freedom of Speech and Association means this to me: I can join my party, you can join yours. You are perfectly free to express your opinions, but so am I. I will defend, with my life, your right to do that. I respect your rights that much, but I don’t have to respect the opinion itself, and I can tell you that. By the way, I spent ten years on foreign soil in (civilian) service of my country. Have you? As to being friends with Muslims, I‘ve been better treated by the Muslims I’ve known that many of the self-proclaimed “Christians” and so has my family. My family has “Right of Return” to Israel, but none of them are Zionists and have no interest in living in Israel. They are Americans first, and Jews second. And Van, why are you so ignorant? Just sayin’.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 3:12pm“Please explain to me why you pseudoconservatives always feel the need to tell people who don’t agree with them to leave the country?”
Because you obviously disagree with the idea of Freedom of Speech and Association as you would have the State just quash Christian expression rather than encourage others to express themselves in spite of an overwhelming Christian majority… Seriously, Christmas buttons on a person is banned in a bank in the middle of a major majority of Christians.. You support that, you should leave America..
I don‘t know how you can say I’m ignorant, you did not rebut any of the facts I presented..
You aren’t Catholic, you know it, you just found some people who let you live your lie happily…
Report Post »DesertRose1960
Posted on December 17, 2010 at 3:59pm@Vangrungy, What facts did you present? Yes, there is a country where most of the population is Jewish; it’s called Israel. I have no interest in living there; neither does my family. I do live in a country that makes me happy, the United States; why should I leave? I’m not Catholic? That will come as big news to the parish priests who’ve heard my Confessions and administered Holy Communion to me in a dozen states and at least one foreign country. One of my dearest friends was a Jesuit priest, he loved my family and never questioned my faith, and was crazy about my chocolate chip cookies. My marriage was blessed by another priest who knew my husband and children were Jewish. He helped me get the Dispensation granted by a Bishop to make it happen. So, I think that proves I’m a Catholic in good standing. Why are you so judgemental? Do you wish to have your faith judged by someone so ignorant of it?
It isn’t a fact that I am bitter, that’s your opinion. You made some weird and vague remark that I don’t understand about Jews siding with Muslims and Christian being inquisitive. Oh, you mean the Spanish Inquisition? I’ve read “The Spanish Inquisition” by Henry Kamen. It wasn’t what you think, maybe you should try reading his book.
Where does the Government get off telling a bank not to decorate it’s business with overtly religious symbols? Maybe for the same reason that they came down on The Imperial Palace casino for hosting “Hitler Birthday Parties”. If the bank chooses to dress itself up like a church, an atheist, Muslim, Jew, or other non-Christians, and even some Christians might feel that they wouldn’t be treated the same as Christians, and that is discrimination. Discrimination based on religion is illegal. Why is my opposition to relgious intimidation and discrimination based on religion being opposed to the First Amendment? By the way, I’m a huge admirer of the First Amendment, I can quote it by heart. I once got into a discussion with someone about Freedom of Speech and when I started reciting it, he responded “We’re not talking about Freedom of Religion, we’re talking about the First Amendment.” By the way, there are five parts to the First Amendment, do you know them? My husband won his first commander’s coin for reciting them.

You would prohibit the free exercise thereof. Where is the compelling interest in banning any religion in an institution that is not State property? muslims, Jews and Atheists who are offended with the bank is a little too Christian for their taste can choose another bank or GTFO…
It’s called the free market, don‘t shove your belief that nobody can display their belief down anyone’s throat… The People would decide if this bank was doing wrong by not banking there… Can you prove that a display of Faith is discriminatory? Do you support hijabs and for muslimas working in Banks? Did I just catch you in cognitive dissonance?

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 6:38pm@ Vangrungy, actually, you‘re the one who’s on the ropes, in case you didn’t know that. The case against The Imperial Palace was a case of the Federal government coming into a private business that served the public on property that wasn’t state owned and interferred with practices that were viewed as discriminatory. There were complaints, and the Federal government decided to act. Discrimination is illegal. The Courts upheld the decision, too. And no, I am not equating Christianity with Hitler.
I haven’t been in this bank, but for Federal employees, most of whom are conservative and at least nominally Christian, to demand that a bank make these changes, there must have been SOME reason, and it must have been a whopper, too. It is much easier and more popular to let these things just slide. Perhaps there were complaints from customers or even employees. I am sure that the facts will not be nearly as black and white as this blog would paint them. I’ll bet it will wash out like the Dover School Board case, the Christians didn’t come out well in that one at all.
As to Muslim women wearing hijabs in banks, it just so happens that several of the clerks at my bank are Muslim women. I have no problem with them wearing hijabs, and when I noticed henna on the hand of one, I asked what she was celebrating, it was the Eid at the end of Ramadan. I don’t have problems with Sikhs or Hindus or Buddhists, either. But I have been around “Christians” who made my live as a Catholic quite difficult. It seems that I didn’t measure up to their standards of faith, and therefore, I deserved to be treated less well than their co-religionists. I have refused to do business with several businesses because I thought they were “too religious.” I will not ever buy a car from a dealer who puts a Christian fish in the dealership logo, for instance.
When I go into a bank, I am there to do business. I am not there to pray or be prayed over. Had I been a resident of this town, I probably would have spoken to the bank manager, and then, depending on the response, gone elsewhere, but I would have made it VERY clear that the religious attitude in a secular enviroment was objectionable to me. When I go to Mass, I don’t expect credit cards, an express line, or an ATM. Most businesses respect the secular nature of our country and the business world in general, they keep the holiday decorations to a secular minimum. The free market is a great thing, and it often remedies the problem, but not always. It could also be that this town is so small that there isn’t another bank to go to.
Here’s where the count starts. America is supposed to be a free country. Your attitude has proved my original point, you are free to express your opinions and practice your religion, and I am free to express mine and practice mine, as long as they meet with your approval, and if they don‘t then YOU get to decide that my faith isn’t good enough and I’m not entitled to live in the country I was born in. What kind of freedom is that? Besides, “Good Christian Conservative” freedom? I’m willing to tolerate your ignorance, intolerance, your judgemental attitudes, and even your desire to deprive others of the freedom you so claim to love. Why? Because it’s a free country, and that’s what being a liberal means. Bell rings.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 9:30pm@Vangrungy, Holy Crap! You can’t even come up with anything intelligent or relevant to say! So, you’ve heard of Charles Martel! Mazel Tov! So what if Hilter thought he should have lost the Battle of Tours? Neither of those factoids is remotely relevant to anything in the thread. And you managed to get in a little anti-Semitic stereotyping, too! I know a lot of Jews, I don’t know a single banker, or a lawyer, or a doctor, either.
Sharia is also completely irrelevant to the discussion, too. I know a lot of Jews who keep Kosher, that doesn’t threaten me. I know a lot of Muslims who wear hijabs. If the young woman at the bank waits on me in a timely courtesous manner, her head gear isn’t relevant. However, when I see a SECULAR BUSINESS that goes out of its way to deck itself out as a “Christian” place first, my experience has told me that I won’t be treated as fairly as I would be nearly anyone else. It’s all that loving Christian spirit, so evident here on these threads. Your lot is so fond of shouting about Jesus and freedom, but you forget that other people are also free.
@MODAWG, You may be trying to sound reasonable and rational, but really, you failed. You points are completely irrelevant, too and your choice of them doesn’t reflect well on you. Let’s look at it this your way, maybe the bank shouldn’t have taken offense at the order, or maybe you shouldn’t have taken offense and posted in response to me.
We aren’t in ancient Israel. It’s the 21st century, and we’re in the United States of American. Israel was a theocracy. The United States is a secular nation. It’s in the Constitution, Article Six, and the First Amendment. The United States is not now, has never been, and furthermore, will never be (provided the Constitution survives) a Christian Nation.
The United States is a secular nation where Christians do make up the majority, but the minority has rights, too. And those rights include not being discriminated against. Discrimination should offend you, but I‘ll bet you’re one of those people who doesn’t see offense unless it is personal, you don’t care if it bothers someone else. And I have EVERY right to complain if a business policy offends me. In fact, I OWE it to the business to tell them why I am not doing business with them.
But, I realize this is all completely irrelevant, because the Fed backed down, and the religious artifacts get to stay. But according to the thread, even some Christians in Oklahoma realize that the Fed was right. Banks are not churches and churches are not banks, everything should be in its place. The Rightwing likes to rant against political correctness, but they have no problem imposing it.

Report Post »Who said I took offense to your post? I believe my points are very relative. And the first Amendment clearly states that government does not have the right to interfere with religious practices. In addition, the workers at the bank are entitled to the right to freedom of speech. You do have the right to choose another banking establishment if you choose to do so. I want to know where in the constitution does it gaurentee you, you will not be offended in life. If evreything was banned that someone might take offense to, there would not be much left, would there. Honestly, what the people in the bank were doing was NOT discrimination, however, expecting people of a particular religion, ie christianity, not to observe the holidays they choose to celebrate, because someone may choose to be offended, is. Agian, I ask you where in the constitution, does the guarentee you, you will not see something you might be offended by. Ever driven by a “Gentlemans club”? The reasons I chose Anchient Israel, are one because it was a theocracy, therefor, the majority of the people held the same religious beliefs; and two, because You included the Jewish faith in your argument.
“The Rightwing likes to rant against political correctness, but they have no problem imposing it.”
You make a statement like this, while, arguing for discrimination against the freedom of Christians to worship, because someone may choose to be offended, seriously?

Report Post »Oh, by the way, The United States, was founded on Judeo-Christian values. You might try reading the documents and writings of the people who founded this nation, before stating it was never a Christian Nation. Just because everyone is not Christian who resides in the United States, does not mean it is not a Christian nation. The United States does not promote a state religion, and does not prohibit others from practicing their religious beliefs, but it is a Christian nation.
