Feds Look at Technology to Disable Your Cell Phone in Your Car

It’s been no secret that Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood would stop all drivers from talking on cell phones if he could. And now we have a clearer picture of what he may have in mind. On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program Tuesday, LaHood started talking technology:
“There’s a lot of technology out there now that can disable phones and we’re looking at that,” said LaHood on MSNBC. LaHood said the cellphone scramblers were one way, and also stressed the importance of “personal responsibility.”
The hosts of Morning Joe pushed the secretary about the possibility of requiring scrambling technology installed in vehicles.
“I think it will be done,” said LaHood. “I think the technology is there and I think you’re going to see the technology become adaptable in automobiles to disable these cell phones. We need to do a lot more if were going to save lives.”
Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey has a pretty good list of problems with this approach:
This is frightfully dense in a number of different ways. Let’s count them up, shall we?
- The scrambler would also affect the passengers in a car that want to use their cell phones, which doesn’t do anything to improve public safety.
- The presence of multitudinous scramblers in autos driving in a city will likely render cell phones used by pedestrians useless as well, or at least unreliable.
- Adding more required equipment to cars will make them more expensive, and increase the value of used cars without the scramblers.
- People who want to make calls from their cars or allow their passengers to do so will likely hold onto current vehicles longer.
- Anything installed in a car can be disabled by the owner, especially electronics. Will car owners have to submit to random searches, or annual verification of scrambler functionality? Will the federal government make that yet another unfunded mandate on the states?
- People also get distracted by eating, reading printed material, and applying make-up. Shall we ban drive-through restaurants, newspapers, and cosmetics, too?

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 1:42amIt is personal responsibilty, not the governments. What about being able to locate people that have been abducted, or children that need help, or to report accidents? These people want us to become helpless. I can understand fining people who use their cell phones while driving if it causes an accident , I get it. But to disable the use of cell phones is dangerous and only enables the government to use it against us to force yet further control. Write or call your state representatives and be loud and clear.

PAY ATTENTION… Any time the government says “epidemic” it is CODE for “loss of freedoms” and ‘government control”.
And you know those “neat ” devices that OnStar puts in your car to stop your car if someone steals it and the police are chasing it to get it back for you…it’s for your own safety, don’t ya know…. NOT.

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 12:14amThis is just more of the same old stuff these idiots have been doing to us for far too long. As long as it’s in the name of “public safety,” we are expected to give up our personal liberties little by little (“nudge” comes to mind). So if there’s an emergency, what then? I can‘t use my cell phone while I’m driving, and neither can my passengers? And if talking on speakerphone or through the car’s stereo system while both of my hands are on the wheel is distracting, then are we going to ban all talking in vehicles? “But you still have to answer the phone and push a button!” Yeah, you have to do that to operate the radio, too. And your blinker. And your cruise control. And your hazard lights. And the A/C. Why don’t we do away with all of those, too? Personal responsibility means that they leave it UP TO US to decide if we will be responsible or not. NOT for them to MAKE us. Then it’s not “personal” responsibility, it’s government mandated responsibility. If we make the irresponsible choice and have an accident while talking on a cell phone, then we suffer the consequences. If we kill someone in the process, the consequences will be much more severe, of course. But the government is going TOO FAR with this.

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 1:29amHere’s a crazy idea – Outlaw the use of cell phones while driving! Make it a heavy fine, and make sure it is tied to your license so you pay more expensive premiums for your car insurance if caught. Include all types of distracted driving as far as I’m concerned.. I’ve seen people reading books, texting, putting on makeup, you name it. Use roadside cameras to take pictures of drivers andsend them a ticket if they are driving distracted.
I am sick of dangerous drivers not paying attention to the road. If you need to make a phone call so badly, pull over to the shoulder or exit the highway. Don’t put me or my family at risk just because you are in too big a hurry to pull over. Most conversations can wait 10-15 minutes for you to get where you are going or find someplace safe to stop.

More roadside cameras? Big Brother is watching you.
More deaths are likely caused from sleepy drivers than just distracted ones. Just do not do something while driving that requires you to pay more attention to it than you do the driving. Changing your music or radio stations is distracted driving too for that matter and could cost you heavily if the Big Brother equipment catches you doing it. Using hands free for short duration calls while on long drives is not a problem. If, however, you know that your driving skills are imperiled by talking, you should choose not to do it and not leave it to the government to tell us we are too stupid to decide how to figure it out for ourselves and that they know better and will choose for us. Be careful about wishing there was a law for something. Every new law that is passed takes away a little more of our freedom.

The reason peopel have more accidents now with cell phone use in cars is because they are hiding it in their lap while they are texting so the police cannot see them. Looking down makes the driving worse.
Laws will never work. Devices like this will never work. What will work is putting people in jail AFTER they cause damage from using their cell phone in a car. This is the ONLY way to make people responsible.
Heavy jail time AFTER the crime works, not outlawing the crime, because people will always go around a law. Stop scewing with our FREEDOMS!!! Let us take responsibility for our own lives and if we screw up and hurt someone, then and only then throw the book at us!!!

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 10:36amEver see the 2007 movie “Idiocracy” (with Luke Wilson) ?
Basically, the story line contains everything we are currently doing, or are quickly headed for:
- All citizens have implanted RFDs that the government tracks.
- Every inch of everywhere is covered by government cameras.
- Prostitution and drugs are legal and a main stay in every direction you look.
- All cars have government controlled “shut-off” and to go one step further, government controlled built-in explosive devices to self-destruct the car when the official pushes the remote button.
- A small, select portion of re-written history is available on a computer chip that talks to you, at the government library, and all books are gone.
- ALL people are exceedingly stupid – for instance: all a jailed person must do to get out, is tell a stupid guard that their sentence is up and it is time to leave – the guard says OK and lets them out.
Wake up America.
BTW – the Progressives don’t really want us to have cars at all. Too much freedom you know.
If we don’t DRASTICALLY change direction in this country, most of us won’t even have cars, or won’t be able to buy gas (government controlled). It’ll be government mass transit for all. Or, no transit for anyone, because no one will have a job to pay taxes to pay for it.

Posted on November 17, 2010 at 9:49pmFor pete’s sake. Why don’t they just put us out of our misery and just put us all in bubbled prison camps. We have all this technology and they just continue to use it against us. Why in the @##$ do we even have cell phones or internet anymore? This nanny government is really getting out of hand. People will never be able to be accountable because government won’t allow it. Crazy just pure craziness.

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 12:37amThe scariest thing about the government controlling OnStar is that your driving habits and idle time, speeding, GPS location, accurate present status to within a meter, telemetry of the vehicle such as how hard you push it to consume fuel with quick accelerations, etc. are all reportable to the system and trackable without your consent or knowledge. With the added ability to disable your vehicle to top it off, possibly soon to see remote operation for occasions of disabled drivers having a heart attack “for their own and others’ safety”, should alone itself be enough to protest government control of OnStar. These auto bailouts should never have happened.

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 4:44amUse a cell phone amplifier, that should blast through this “scrambler”. Eventually, satellite internet will be available to your car. Bring your laptop, and plug in a Magic Jack, problem solved. Or, if you can afford it, get a satellite phone. It’s only $1.00 a minute to talk!

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 7:43amAnd what happens if you have an emergency in your car and need to dial 911? What happens if you want to report a dangerous even from your car? You have to stop the car, get out and dial?

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 12:32pmJammers are illegal period. The FCC cannot over turn this. The impact would be disasterous to ALL wireless providers and would threaten the security of citizens trying to make E911 calls for emergency assistance. LaHood is ignorant of the impact that this would have. Does he not think before he talks? Did he not consult with technical experts before he chewed off his foot? This policy will NEVER happen. I would put what little money I have left in my 401(k) on it! I find his comments reckless & humorous!

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 12:41pmHe does too much “I think”-ing. Of course the technology is there! It is illegal to use and rightfully so! I wonder which lobby group he is in the pocket of? Who would benefit from this policy?

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 4:24pmHmmm.. being one of the NOBODIES out there who does not nor ever WILL own a cell phone or a blackberry, the point is mute because I guess we are just Luddites… but that being said this nobody thinks to herself Hmmm wait.. what about the cell phone calls that SAVE lives on the road… like when someone (not a nobody like me) sees a car crash and calls 911 so that person(s) can be saved. If they could not use the phone it could take a WHOLE heck of a long time to even know of the accident.. That is something for them to put into the conversation. Unless that is what they want? hmmm… evil plots abound.

Posted on November 19, 2010 at 5:06amI hate to break it to you good folks, but the US Government is now and has long been disrupting our mobile telecommunications in all 50 states through use of a Top Secret, Black Ops sourced GSM jamming technology code-named, “AT&T.”
And if you haven’t already guessed, Soros now owns a controlling majority of the parent shell paper entity, “Virgin,” recently reincorporated in Rhode Island, USA.
