Feds Propose Graphic Cigarette Warning Labels

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Corpses, cancer patients and diseased lungs: These are some of the images the federal government plans for larger, graphic warning labels for cigarette packages.
The images are part of a new push announced by the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday to reduce tobacco use, which is responsible for about 443,000 deaths per year.
The number of Americans who smoke has fallen dramatically over the past 40 years, but those declines have stalled recently. About 46 million adults in the U.S., or 20.6 percent, smoke cigarettes, along with 19.5 percent of high school students.
The new prevention plan is part of the law passed in June 2009 giving the FDA authority to regulate tobacco, including marketing and labeling guidelines, banning certain products and limiting nicotine. The law doesn’t let the FDA ban nicotine or tobacco entirely.
“Today, FDA takes a crucial step toward reducing the tremendous toll of illness and death caused by tobacco use by proposing to dramatically change how cigarette packages and advertising look in this country,” FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said in a news release. “The health consequences of smoking will be obvious every time someone picks up a pack of cigarettes.”
The FDA is proposing 36 labels for public comment, which include phrases like “smoking can kill you” and “cigarettes cause cancer,” but also feature graphic images to convey the dangers of tobacco use.
The agency will select the final labels in June after reviews of scientific literature, public comments, and results from an 18,000-person study. Cigarette makers will then have 15 months to start using the new labels.
The new warning labels are to take up half of a pack — both front and back — of cigarettes and contain “color graphics depicting the negative health consequences.” Warning labels also must constitute 20 percent of advertisements.
“It acts as a very public billboard because you all of the sudden are reading something about lung cancer from that pack behind the cash register, whereas before you were just reading Marlboro,” said David Hammond, a health behavior researcher at the University of Waterloo in Canada, who is working with the firm designing the labels with for the FDA.
In recent years, several countries have introduced labels similar to those proposed by the FDA.
While it is impossible to say how many people quit because of the labels that have been introduced in several countries, Hammond said every source of evidence suggests that the labels do help people quit.
Given the population in the U.S., the impact of the warning labels could be “significant,” Hammond said.

BTW. I have a friend in the hospital getting his lungs removed. He never smoked..Guess it Must be 2nd or third or even fourth hand smoking that got him
I think it was 4th, he kissed a girl who used to go out w/ a guy who did not smoke and his father did not smoke, but his father’s father did smoke.. kinda. . He was in charge of the smoke signals for the great Shawnee tribe. or was it the Sioux? These indians all look alike to me.But anyway, when he waved that blanket over the fire, the smoke got in his lungs and smoke got in his eyes too.How this girlfriend father’s father loved to sing that song by the Platters “Smoke gets in your eyes.It surely got in his, and his lungs too.
This is why many Indians have lung cancer, it’s herititary from all the smoke signals their kinfolks developed.
I think the government should ban smoke signals. Cooking w/ charcoals too.It signals to my neighbours to come and eat for free.
I think smelling charcoal lighter fluid is bad for the health, it smells bad. my chickens smells of lighter fluid when I BBq them..But the neighbours loves them. It’s free.

Posted on November 11, 2010 at 3:31amAny addiction that happens when you are too young to make a wise choice should be a societal concern. These ads don’t ban smoking. They are intended to educate young people. While pictures may deter some children from smoking, the most effective strategy is to expose them to people dying of emphysema or lung cancer. Children have to be shocked out of picking up a habit that initially looks so cool.
Some of you are so angry at govt. intervention that you are starting to sound like anarchists. Tobacco smoke is a pollutant, so it affects everyone. A society where hazardous practices are encouraged or given free rein does not survive. There is a fine line between liberty and anarchy, civilization and corruption. When “everyone turns to his own way,“ it is a sign that ”we like sheep have [indeed] gone astray.”

Posted on November 10, 2010 at 11:17pmThis is ridiculous. YES, smoking is bad for you, YES, smoking is a CONTRIBUTING FACTOR in a lot of illness. YES, everyone needs to not smoke for their health. However, people that smoke are doing it with full knowledge of it not being healthy and it is their right to smoke or not smoke. All this malarkey that second hand smoke is more dangerous than actually smoking and that smoking CAUSES all these horrible illnesses show the stupidity of the people that make these claims either because of their desire to control what everyone else does or just because they don‘t want anyone else to do it because they don’t do it. This story only shows what the true cancers in our lives are the self-righteous wannabe do-gooders that want to control your lives. I was a respiratory therapist for over 20 years and while I fully know what the health risks of smoking are I still believe that you are not justified in lying about the dangers of smoking while at the same time claiming that the people that defend people’s right to smoke if they want are lying. They seem to think that because they are “lying” to improve everyone else’s health that lying is good and okay which makes them even worse liars they they are lying to themselves as well. I will also state that I smoked for over 40 years and I quit smoking a little over a month ago.

So smoking is NOT hazardous to your health? State your sources, please.
“Secondhand smoke is a toxic cocktail consisting of poisons and carcinogens. There are over 4000 chemical compounds in secondhand smoke; 200 of which are known to be poisonous, and upwards of 60 have been identified as carcinogens.
When a cigarette is smoked, about half of the smoke is inhaled / exhaled (mainstream smoke) by the smoker and the other half floats around in the air (sidestream smoke). The combination of mainstream and sidestream smoke makes up environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) … 3000 nonsmokers die every year from lung cancer caused by ETS. … According to the EPA, between 200,000 and 1,000,000 kids with asthma have their condition worsened by secondhand smoke every year.” http://quitsmoking.about.com/cs/secondhandsmoke/a/secondhandsmoke.htm
If you think that only abortionists are accountable to God for killing innocent human beings, you are dead wrong. Go ahead and be cynical and ignore scientific facts. This is no laughing matter or something you can dismiss as government overreach or nobody else’s business. If you willfully contribute to ETS, you will be accountable to God as well. And that is something most churches WON’T tell you either.
