Fender Bender or ‘Bump and Jack?’ The New Robbery Technique You Should be Aware Of

The bump and jack. It’s a funny name, but you’ll want to know that it is.

“It” seems to be a new robbery technique that’s on the rise in the Washington, D.C., area in recent carjackings. It starts with a car being bumped from behind. When the driver gets out to see what damage has been done, someone gets in the car and takes off.

Watch the local ABC news report:

So far, two nearly identical instances occurred within the last two months in the same northeast DC neighborhood. In both cases the victims were women, and the carjackers remain at large. Police think the crimes could be being conducted by the same perpetrators, according to WJLA, stating that in both carjacking cases two men were reportedly involved. One drives the car that did the bumping away, while the other man steals the other car.

WJLA reports that in the same neighborhood a couple years ago, a similar technique was used to rob a man at gunpoint.

As Democratic leaning as it is, New Mexico was way ahead of you Texans. There are basically no restrictions (and never have been) on open carry and your car is considered an extension of your home.

As long as you don’t carry into a bank, government building, bar that doesn’t serve food or a school, you’re good to go.

Around these parts even with liberals controlling most things (especially here in Santa Fe) they’ve never really tried to restrict open carry. CCL is still required for concealed carry, but why carry concealed when you can just wear it on your hip?

I agree with the other posters. Bump and rob isn’t new. It’s been used numerous times in Florida since the state has a large tourist population that might not show up in court if the perp is caught, because of living out-of-state or out-of-country.

In 99% of the cases I’ve read about the perp is black.

Another ploy that people might want to know about is a robbery scam popular among black street thugs. It goes something like, “Hey, ‘you’re wearing my shoes. You stole them.” Then the perp beats up the victim and steals his shoes pretending he thought they were his. In case he gets caught all he can be charged with is brawling instead of violent theft, because he pretended he was fighting to get his shoes back.

Here’s an excellent video showing just that: http://boston.cbslocal.com/2011/12/06/dean-college-students-suspended-after-beating-video-surfaces-online/

      @robert

This same bump thing was tried on a friend of mine around 1989 or so in MD about 1 mile just outside of NE DC. He had a crappy car, but the scheme was apparently to rob him. He stopped on the side of the BW parkway at about 4:14 PM on a weekday, and did not open the door or get out. Two black guys walked up to his window, and they asked if he was going to get out and check out the damage. He said no, its crappy car, and he doesn’t really care what it looks like since it was a light bump. They they became aggressive, and said something like “Let me see you shoes” and one of them said he had a gun (which he never saw.) He opened the door and showed them his old beat up work shoes. They said (edited for content) “Forget it.” and got back into their car and drove away.

This was NOT a very well thought out plan, as this is rush hour on a highway, aside from the obvious mistakes. It really WAS that bizarre of an event, but the point it that bump and (whatever) is not new in the DC area. It‘s always good to be aware of what’s going on though…

It sounds like your friend was targetted for both scams. Good for him that he got away.

People in the DC area are at a disadvantage because of the gun laws there. Here’s hoping that changes as crime increases………which it undoubtedly will.

    My defensive driving tip-o-the-day:
When you pull up behind someone, i.e. traffic light, stop sign, always stop where you can see the rear wheels of the car in front of you. If you can see his rear wheels, you are able to turn out and drive away should you need to make a emergency egress.
Also get your unconstitutional “permit” to carry concealed.

The comments in this article by armed citizens is alarming. I carry concealed, the difference is that I have a lot of training and know the responsibilities that go along with being armed. Saying things like, “I thought I was going to be able to empty a clip.” is dangerous and foolhardy. (It’s a magazine) That kind of talk could very well lead you to being jailed for a much longer period than the perps. This is especially true if it could be proven that you are predisposed to that action, regardless of the level of the threat. Although you have a right to protect yourself and your property (in states that have castle laws) or at the least (in other states) if you are in fear of serious injury or death to yourself or others, you do not have the right to empty a magazine. You have only the right to neutralize the threat. Beyond that you can be charged with anything from assault to premeditated murder, not to mention the civil liability you may incur from the perp or the perp’s family. Understand that if you shoot someone, even if they had a gun, you will most likely be taking a trip with the responding LEOs.

Although we often hear about the grandma that blew away the armed home invader and was recognized as a hero, there are many times we do not hear about the citizen that has a license to carry that was detained after what he or she believed was the appropriate drawing of a weapon.

Simple,no fancy frills,no satellite GPS or anything.A device easily worn on the body and quickly within reach.Specific to the owners vehicle.

Yes .. but in DC you can be pretty certain that the victim is unarmed .. in Miami (or anywhere in Florida) if it is a resident not so much.

Lol. Was going to say same thing.

The next “new” story here will be the one where the car in front of you slams on it’s breaks and you rearend them… staged “insurance scam” accidents (all passengers complain of terrible neck and back pain). The “swoop and squat” it’s called .Lol.

When ever in an accident or fender bender, point to other drivers to stop, make eye contact as if you know who they are while motioning them to come to you. Don’t forget to ask those affected in the accident to see if they are alright.
