TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – A samurai sword seriously injures a Terre Haute man sometime overnight on Friday at the intersection of 4th and Lincoln.
According to the Terre Haute Police, a man was inside his home when he became upset that headlights from a car on the street were shining into his bedroom.
That’s when police say he got into a fight with the man in the car.
The man from the house eventually picked up a wooden club and then investigators say that’s when the man from the car pulled out a samurai sword.
According to detectives, in the middle of the fight, the man with the sword sliced off three fingers from the man with the club.

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 7:12amFolks, I think everyone is missing a point here…a club vs. a sword is a pretty even contest, I used to have a katana in my car years ago & then it was stolen.
Report Post »If person A picks up a bat, it’s still deadly force…the real problem here is the car lights; maybe we should outlaw cars…I mean this story wouldn’t even be news if the guy with the club had been hit with the frikkin CAR.
Once again the media focuses on the TOOL; I will grant you that sword fights are pretty novel & makes good copy, but seriously….
I remember (& this was YEARS ago) a guy lost it & pulled a sword on the Staten Island Ferry & was put down by an off-duty police officer; the media played that up, & totally missed the real point; if others had access to the appropriate tools it wouldn’t have gotten as far as it did (if memory serves the would be Highlander injured or killed as many as 10 people).
I don‘t know what Indiana’s gun laws are like but maybe it’s easier to carry a sword than get a permit; maybe the guy does martial arts demos…like slicing up watermelons & stuff like that.
There are actually quite a few reasons to have a sword, personally I think idiot A should have stayed in his house; & idiot B should have driven away.

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 3:24pmI can’t say I agree with you on the weapons rojblake. The difference between a katana and a club is rather simple. If your arm gets hit with a club for example, it will probably be broken at worst. If your arm gets hit by a katana however, you may very well lose that arm. Idiot A was lucky he only lost three fingers. Idiot B could have probably easily done far worse to him.

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 6:26pmA sword has some advantages true, but a pipe is still leathal force…also a club doesn’t require the same level of skill, a sword (especially a katana) has only 1 real point of impact, the edge, a club not so.
Report Post »Masamune
Posted on December 21, 2010 at 12:20amI’ll concede to you the point in that a club can be quite lethal with little skill required. Against a trained swordsman however, I would still say that the sword is the more dangerous weapon of the two. The man was able to cut off three fingers so I’d conclude that he must have had some skill with a blade and was aiming to injure or maim rather than kill his attacker since a more obvious tactic would have been to simply remove the weapon hand or arm. You can recover from broken bones or bruises but you can’t replace lost fingers unless you have access to a really good doctor or a lot of money.
Report Post »RojBlake
Posted on December 21, 2010 at 7:20amI don’t know the full story, obviously, but it’s quite possible that the fingers could have been lost accidentilly. Consider that as far as I know removing fingers is not part of any Kenjutsu tecnique that I’ve ever heard of or seen it could have been the result of a bad parry.
Most movies show edge to edge parries which is bad form, your supposed to use the flat of the blade, if he tried to parry with the edge, it’s quite possible that club wielder A actually slamed his hand on to the blade.

Posted on December 21, 2010 at 12:46pmHmm, I guess we just won’t know until we get more info on this story. Were the fingers lost due to skill or stupidity? Most people wouldn’t be used to fighting against a samurai sword so your argument is entirely plausible here. Does anyone know if any other news sources are looking further into this?

Posted on December 21, 2010 at 1:25amNot to be a stickler here, but where exactly in the 2nd Amendment does it mention guns? It doesn’t. It says “Arms.” Everybody these days (except those who are arguing about “knife rights”) assumes it’s about firearms. The 2nd Amendment covers samurai swords as much as AR-15s.

I don’t know for sure but if I had to take a guess…pipe moron came out of house not to get into a duel, but to smash sword morons headlights. Sword moron saw him coming & figured he was coming after him, drew sword & ended dispute.

The story says that he cut of the fingers “in the middle of the fight.” My guess is that it ended the fight. A cut to the hands is a typical Samurai move. Maybe he was lucky, but I’m thinking he has some training. If that is true, then I am not on his side because he should know better to be in that situation in the fist place.

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 2:46amIt probably was one of the newer cars with “moron-proof” automatic headlights.
Since the design engineer (most likely a Green Party member if hired since the late 80s) “knows” better than the vehicle operator that the headlights must be on if it is not bright outside and the key is on, and there can never be any possible conceivable reason for them to be off if the key is on and it is not bright outside.
I remember when you would signal someone with a burned out light or such with turning your lights off for a moment, but the “new” moron (what the GM Greens think of drivers) operator systems pioneered by GM almost a decade ago don’t allow for lights off in dim or dark conditions and the key is on. not if the car is running and in gear, not even after the car has started. Before the starter engages; the headlights are on (causing serious reduction in halogen headlight life expectancy from the undervoltage condition)
I would bet that the car has such an automatic system preventing turning off the headlights when it is not bright out and the key is on. Somebody wanted to warm the vehicle up, couldn’t turn the headlights off except by shutting off the vehicle and refused to do so.
