Fireball Explodes Out of a Manhole Just Feet From a Terrified Couple

Have you ever deliberately avoided stepping on a manhole cover embedded in a sidewalk or street because — let’s face it — you never know if it’s on tightly enough?
If you’re one of the cautious walkers who avoid stepping on these covers, the following footage may have you distancing yourself even more from manholes.
Watch, below, as a fireball erupts just feet in front of a strolling couple:
The incident took place in Peterborough, U.K., and, as the report states, this manhole is a particularly unruly one. There was an even larger blast earlier when no one was around.
Check out the extended footage here, showing the couple’s solution to cross to the other side of the street as well as the more drastic explosion from earlier in the month:

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 1:50amAbout thirteen miles to the south is the former USAF airbase RAF Alconbury, now mostly civilian use and a small military residential area. Any chance residual JP-4 mighta leaked north? (only kidding) More likely built-up methane that got touched off by something sparking, maybe a relay or something.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 1:17amThis reminds me of the original very funny movie “The Out of Towners” with Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis where they were in New York going through all kinds of problems and they were standing next to a manhole cover that started rumbling and exploded sending the heavy metal cover high up into the air and landed near them making the loudest noise. They didn’t know what the heck was going on. Lesson from this is never walk on a manhole cover because it may be the last thing you ever do (not really, chances really are slim to none).

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 12:04amThat’s why they got rid of house traps in the US. Except for stupid Pittsburgh of course. They goound out in the 60′s that by having each house have a trap in front of it, there was no way for the methane gas to escape from the sewer system and would lead to build ups and explosions. The needed house traps because there didn’t used to be traps on each of the fixtures back in the day and gases would leak into the home, not to mention roaches and other sanitary problems. NOw that all fixtures are required to have their own trap, the house traps are removed and the vent coming out of the top of your house is actually venting out the main sewer line. Pretty ingenious really. This way it get’s all the gases way up in the sky into the wind instead of stinking up where people live and breath. I only learned all this as I had failed a plumbing inspection on the house trap and couldn’t figure out why Pittsburgh required them when the other states I worked in forbid them. The reason is some stupid one I don’t understand, something about the rain gutters being connected to the sewers still… oh yeah, …hahaha just realized, with out the house trap, methane gases would go into the gutter/rain pipes… How about that, just learned something by just jabbering away ..lol

Posted on November 24, 2011 at 8:34pmhahaha, this is staged – the explosives are planted, you don’t think that there being a camera on that specific spot from one or two stories up is a little questionable, it‘s kinda like watching a reality show and thinking it’s not scripted or thinking the WWF is real ! LOL

Posted on November 24, 2011 at 8:43pmActually, the UK has cameras all over the place, as part of surveillance and law enforcement. It’s been pretty controversial over there for the last several years. Who knows if it’s staged or not, but the camera was probably there all along.
