Fired Penn State Coach Joe Paterno Dead at 85

Fired Penn State Coach Joe Paterno Dead at 85

AP

Former Penn State University coach Joe Paterno died at age 85, his family said Sunday.

“He died as he lived,” a statement from his family said. “He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community.”

Paterno’s son announced in November that the former coach was undergoing treatment for lung cancer, shortly after he was dismissed from Penn State amid a major child sex abuse scandal.

Paterno had been in the hospital since Jan. 13, shortly after he conducted his only interview since losing his job. In it, Paterno said he “didn’t know which way to go” after an assistant coach came to him in 2002 saying he had seen retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually abusing a boy.

Doctors said Saturday the beloved Paterno was in “serious” condition, and false reports of his death briefly circulated before being shot down by his family.

“With great sadness we mourn the passing of Coach Joe Paterno…Few have done more,” a message on Penn State Football’s Facebook page read Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

In the end, he was just an old man who cared more about his football program, than stopping an abuser of children. “He told school officials” is a weak cowardly excuse and everyone knows it.

Sorry to hear this, prayers go out!

o I broke my promise to never post again, but I have to say this one last thing. How do we fight fire with fire? Not with a bloody revolution, it is not necessary at this point. Here is what ALL right minded Americans need to do:
We pick a date, we ALL call in sick, and stay sick for a week, we bring this country to it’s knees! If that does not do it, quit your jobs! How will they pay for their crimes, if they have no tax revenue? How will they control us, millions of us all at the same time?
WE CAN make a difference, WE CAN change the course away from communism, DO YOU HAVE THE GUTS to do this? What are they going to do, lock us all up for being deadbeats? There are not enough cops or jails if MILLIONS of people do this! What difference does it make anyway, you lose your job now, under our terms, or you lose your job and life later on their terms?
If we fail to come together we are LOST! Either we fight fire with fire, or we lose our country and freedoms forever!
If you are self employed, you can withold your taxes, fine. If you are paid by an employer, one has no control of the taxes THEY take out for you…I seem to remember the French Revolution being a bloody afair, and I said there was not need for one of those. This is a peaceful, yet EFFECTIVE means of protest. Not one drop of blood will be spilled to bring down this corrupt, illegal current gov’t we have now! @KINGRUDDY…..
King, no one said Joe ‘did it’.
Joe should have went to school administrators and said..”if you don’t report this to the police, then I will.” He should have called for a meeting with the administration as soon as he heard of the incident. If you actually read the above statement by Joe, its clear he did not take charge of things. Joe certainly had enough clout to force their hand.

Joe was too busy, had too many things on his mind, to worry very much about young boys taking one for team in those taxpayer-paid university showers. He and McQueary should have gone straight to the police, not school administrators. Paterno could have at least demanded Sandusky be tossed from the campus, but he didn’t even do that. He continued to park his car next to Sandusky’s and stood silent for years knowing he was using his Second Mile charity as a spider web for young boys.

Islamhater, you are the one that is so messed up. Sandusky was already retired by a couple of years. You cannot fire somebody who is already gone. He turned the matter over people in authority over these matters. If he had contacted the police to follow up, it would have been taken as pressure to sway their investigation. Police rarely get back to you and follow up they need to keep your testimony untainted. The grand jury process is a secret one and in this case one that went on for a long, long time.
Paterno has a lifetime of taking kids on the brink and turning their lives around. He and Sue would tutor kids at his kitchen table. They have given millions to Penn State for the library and spiritual center, meant to benefit all of the students. In all of the years I was there, I never once saw him put football ahead of the students. The basic goodness and decency as a human being shown over decades of time in public and private, testify that he wasn’t the man you portray him to be.
I have a lot of relatives in their 80s and frankly his response is an 80 year old’s response to something new and unfamiliar. They pass it off to others because they don’t want to break it. He had never dealt with anything like this before and that’s exactly what he did.
The man did his purgatory on earth so God could take him straight to heaven when he died. “Blessed are you when they say persecute you and say all sort of vile things against you.”

When Joe Pateno was fired (more like offered up as a human sacrifice) Penn State’s  Board Of Trustees only succeeded in cutting out the school’s own heart and soul….two things they are now realizing they can’t survive without. In so many ways, they have only killed themselves.

The despicable, cowardly manner in which the BOT betrayed Paterno is second in magnitude only to that of perhaps that of Jesus Christ. The spineless weasels masquerading as the BOT will retort that no one person is above the university, but in Joe’s case, I’m afraid they miscalculated…Joe truly WAS Penn State. Heart and soul. In a manner that apparently the generation that makes up the BOT is incapable of comprehending.

Joe’s commitment to Penn State  and its students was total and complete. The BOT and school administration, on the other hand are committed only to saving their own wretched hides. They are the ones who really “should have done more”.

In the final analysis, Joe’s reputation  and example will survive untarnished. The University he literally existed for, on the other hand, will not. In the hearts and minds of the heretofore faithful, the school that resides in what used to called Happy Valley is now Judas University. The name fits.

I suspect that Penn State has a policy in place for reporting criminal acts. I suspect, as in many such policies, that reporting it to your superiors is the stated proper procedure. Which is exactly what Paterno did. Shame on the trustees for firing him with one game left in the season, just to take heat off themselves and try to limit their liability.

Oh yeah. Let’s extoll his great coaching career. Let’s gloss over the fact that his main goal was to protect Penn State Football above all. Paterno did not report the buggering of a child to anyone but his superior, and a month before Sandusky’s arrest, he was sitting in Paternos press box.
The man enabled Sandusky to continue to molest kids. A truly great man would have made sure Sandusky was under the jail no matter what.

Should we vilify the man upon his death? No. But let’s not rewrite history and make him a hero.

Lot’s of very self-righteous folks here. Just remember, if you believe in judgement before God, you will be equally judged for all of the times you felt righteous enough to be judge, jury and executioner… Secondly, seems there is an equal amount of joy in the ability to judge others based on the limited amount of information the media feeds us. If you feel you have enough information to castigate Mr. Paterrno, be sure that are are pure in your efforts. If not, you will regret it when you are being judged for your actions.

He was only a football coach that allowed children to be molested, if he didn’t do so himself. Find a cure for cancer, or save a child from a burning building, some may call you a hero. Being a head football coach with dictatorial powers in a system that really wasn‘t such a big deal doesn’t add up to hero to me.

You need to study your Bible a little more. Nowhere does God say that discernment of good and evil will be punished on Judgement Day. Nor does he say we should not judge another’s earthly actions as right or wrong. He only admonishes us that we are not the judges of where our fellow men are sent in the afterlife. In other words, we are not the arbiters of who goes to heaven, and who goes to hell.

Seriously, do a little learning before you lecture others about their *righteous* indignation. Pretending you know the Bible, and then threatening people’s souls with your twisted, made-up interpretations, is a serious moral failing.

HORNSFAN96: A “serious moral failing?” Seems you have some anger issues and are much more self-righteous than you have wrongfully assumed I am. But thanks for setting me straight… I guess, according to your opinion, no one has a right to say that they believe that the “court of public opinion” is a dangerous thing, a slippery slope. And, upon a man’s death, you castigate him based upon news reports.Seems that self-righteousness is in full force when someone questions the judgmental nature of the enlightened folks here. Since I know this will just add more fuel to the fire I apparently started with my remarks, go ahead and assume you know me and my motivations and continue to make significant personal assessments without even knowing me. Do you deny that you would have pity on a good friend or loved one if they were in serious trouble?
And how you would squeal if you were denied your day in court should you be accused of wrong!?

Yet you’ve categorically tried, convicted, & pronouced judgement on Mr. Paterno. Based on what? What’s printed in the press?

God alone knows all the details & He alone will be the final Judge. We can only judge others according to what they’ve ACTUALLY done (not assume) & what the law allows – NO MORE.

Assuming you don’t picket & scream at the top of your lungs against the murder of society’s most innocent (abortion), are you then a “tacit” (your word) accomplice? – or do you get to hide behind “it’s the law”?

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? (Matthew 7:1-3)

Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. FOR BY YOUR WORDS YOU WILL BE JUSTIFIED, AND BY YOUR WORDS YOU WILL BE CONDEMNED.” (Matthew 1

It’s too bad the way Penn St treated JoePa. They could have just let him finish the season out and fade quietly into the night, but NO this college could not. I hope parents stop sending their kids to Penn st after they showed their true colors.

He new what was going on for years yet he did NOTHING!!!!
i dont care if it is one child or 100 children he is no less guilty then the man who did the raping.
his supporters are just as bad to.

    R.I.P Coach Paterno.
To those here that feel you are entitled to judge and curse the man, shame on you. None of us know anything, we speculate based on what we see and hear in the media. To curse him upon his death is no less despicable than what you curse him for! Judge not lest ye be judged…

Yeah…..all he did was turn his back on his assistant coach raping little boys for 10 years. Why are you people so judgemental? He should have been able to finish out the season and ride into the sunset quietly? Give Me A BREAK! The right thing to do was to ram a pipe up the ass of his assistant coach 10 years ago and ask him how he likes it……because thats how you feel to those innocent little boys. Ignore knowledge of raping little boys and you deserve to die in disgrace……I don’t care how his football teams did. No sympathy here.

troll im not. to say that he did what he was suppose to do is a joke. im sure you would have just been fine with it if your son was one of the many that were raped. he admitted to knowing and not doing more. think of the boy screaming for help and nobody doing a damn thing. i call it like it is and you see molesting boys is fine as long as its not yours.

Joe Paterno was a father, does anyone with a functional brain think that a father would let other children be so severly mistreated. I can’t believe he would do that. I think that judgement should be left till all the facts are out, if they ever are. If he needs judgement for these terrible things God will handle that.

its sad he ruined his name covering up for a child molester right before he died. all i think about when i hear his name is all the kids he helped destroy. all the good he done is for not because he thought of himself and not the kids he knew was being abused. if it were his grandchildren being molested id say he wouldnt have done the same thing.

Maybe a less disrespectful title is in line? Maybe, College footballs 1-a all time winning coach dies at 85. Maybe something that shows a little more class than copying it from Yahoo thanks.

The people who speak negative of Joe, will probably not end up where Joe is now. The side of God.

Oh he let them be molested? The parents had no say in it? The administrators at the college who worked out his retirement agreement had no part? It was just Joe Paterno who had nothing to do with it. No physical sight of it, only a report of it from the one who should have gone to the police personally…Mike McCreary. People like you make me sick. People who have no understanding of a situation but yet, pull the verdict lever before they even understand 1/100th of the scenario. Glad to see the liberal fools are out in full force.

No, don’t let it go. So, if your kid got to play on the team, it would be ok if the ole coach, joepa, or his staff have a go at him, every once and awhile? He knew that kids were being raped by members of his staff, and did nothing about it. Why did not do something about it? Because he probably had a go a few kids himself.
Really, Hickory; you want to sing this guys praises?
