First Photos of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Released

This, most recent photo of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords since she was shot, was posted to her public Facebook page by her aides Sunday morning June 12, 2011. The woman in the background is her mother Gloria Giffords. The photo was taken May 17, 2011 at TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital, the day after the launch of Endeavour and the day before she had her cranioplasty.Giffords could be released from a rehabilitation hospital in Houston sometime this month, a top aide says, offering the latest indication that the Arizona congresswoman is making progress in recovering from a gunshot wound to the head. PHOENIX (AP) — The first photos of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords since she was shot in the head in a mass shooting in Tucson about five months ago were released early Sunday.
The photos appeared on her Facebook page.
Both pictures show the congresswoman outside. In one she is alone and smiling at the camera, her hair trimmed short with the skin on the side of her head slightly disclored but with no clear sign of any scarring. In the other, she is sitting with a woman.

Giffords has been in a Houston rehab facility since two weeks after the Jan. 8 shooting. Six people were killed and 13 were injured, including Giffords.
Since the shooting, the only time the public was able to glimpse Giffords was April 27 as she boarded a plane to Florida to watch astronaut husband Mark Kelly launch into space. The grainy footage showed Giffords slowly but purposefully walking up the airplane’s stairs.

The newly released photos provide a much clearer image.
Last month as Kelly was orbiting Earth, doctors repaired Giffords’ skull, finally freeing her from wearing a cumbersome protective helmet that her staff members say she hated.
Since the shooting, Giffords has made remarkable strides, requesting her favorite foods, singing her favorite songs, and relearning how to walk and talk, although she struggles to string sentences together.
In an interview with The Arizona Republic published Thursday, Giffords‘ Chief of Staff Pia Carusone said Giffords’ limited speaking ability has led her to rely primarily on facial expressions and hand gestures to communicate.
“She is borrowing upon other ways of communicating. Her words are back more and more now, but she’s still using facial expressions as a way to express. Pointing. Gesturing,” Carusone said. “Add it all together and she’s able to express the basics of what she wants or needs. But, when it comes to a bigger and more complex thought that requires words, that‘s where she’s had the trouble.”
Carusone also said that if Giffords’ recovery were to plateau now, “it would not be nearly the quality of life she had before.”
“All that we can hope for is that she won‘t plateau today and that she’ll keep going and that when she does plateau, it will be at a place far away from here,” she said.
Jared Lee Loughner, 22, has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the shooting and is being held at a Missouri facility. A judge declared him incompetent to stand trial, but prosecutors hope his competency can be restored so he can answer for the charges.

All too sadly, I‘m afraid you’re right. I find, all the time, that liberals ruin everything they touch. Every place they go, they’re like an infection and they stink up the room whether it be real or virtual.
As for the Congresswoman, my thoughts are later in the thread. I’m glad seeing my prayers (and those of countless others) have been answered. I pray she makes a full recovery. She looks good, and it’s nice to have some good news once in a while, also of a person I never met.

Its usually that her work “what ever that turns out to be” is not yet finished. Back off the political comments folks they really are not needed. This world is not about political affiliation … its about doctoral belief. It will take strong belief for here to pull through this, give her a wide girth folks, she has earned it.
I would say to her friends, don’t expect to receive the old Gabrielle back after this is over. This is the most difficult for many to get through as they expect Gabrielle to just pop back as her old self. This never occurs with head injuries, I speak from personal experience here. Her friends should expect someone different, who will not be predictable based on the old Gabrielle they knew. This will be especially true for her husband who will find himself with a very different woman than the one he has been married to all these years. My advice to here husband is to start from square one and get to know this woman as if she were a completely different individual with some of the same qualities as Gabrielle. Accept the changes and meld them in with the old feelings you had for Gabrielle. Family members must learn to do this as well. This is the most difficult task as what you expect is not going to be what you receive. Her behavior will seem odd to those who actually knew her before.
