‘First We Ought to Kill Them and Eat Them’: Sights and Sounds from Occupy D.C.

Washington, D.C.’s answer to the ongoing Occupy Wall Street protests kicked into high gear Thursday with a large rally and “occupation” just blocks from the White House, culminating in a demonstration with a “We want jobs!” chant in front of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Several hundred people gathered first in Freedom Plaza for a combination protest-concert, railing against corporate greed and the increasing gap separating the “top 1 percent” from the “99 percent.”

Several hundred protesters gathered several blocks from the White House in Washington, D.C.'s Freedom Plaza for a rally and concert as part of the Days of Rage movement Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011. Madeleine Morgenstern/The Blaze

It was actually part of a four-day “October 2011” movement timed to commemorate the 10-year mark since U.S. actions in Afghanistan began. With the “Occupy” protests picking up steam around the country, organizers were happy to embrace that fervor, including with their “Human Needs Not Corporate Greed” mantra.

Of course, as has been the case since the Days of Rage movement began in September, not everyone was quite on the same page with the protest’s exact goals. Even the October 2011 group itself wasn’t too clear on what their demands were, right up to the day of the protest. From their website:

October2011.org is working through its steering committee, endorsing organizations and the thousands of members of our online community to develop the demands we stand for.  We have made a lot of progress but continue to work on these issues and will continue to do so during the occupation of Freedom Plaza beginning on October 6.

The group did list seven general issues on its site where “super majorities of the American public agree with our political goals but the U.S. government is going in the opposite direction”:

  • Tax the rich and corporations
  • End the wars, bring the troops home, cut military spending
  • Protect the social safety net, strengthen Social Security and improved Medicare for all
  • End corporate welfare for oil companies and other big business interests
  • Transition to a clean energy economy, reverse environmental degradation
  • Protect worker rights including collective bargaining, create jobs and raise wages

Brad Blanton of Luray, Va. had one of the more extreme messages of the protest, saying it was time to literally start eating the wealthy in order to fix economic inequality.

“They‘re devouring us and now it’s time we start devouring them back,” Blanton said. “I’m advocating cannibalism.”

But actual cannibalism? Apparently so.

“We ought to cut ‘em up and have a little ritual where we call it communion,” Blanton said. “We’re all cannibals, all human beings are cannibals. What we need to do is start eating from the top instead of the bottom.”

And again, just so there was no mistake:

“First we ought to kill them and eat them. I think cannibalism is the answer. Second to that, just regulate the hell out of them, that’d be okay,” Blanton said.

Carrie Stone of Clarksburg, W.V. carried a sign that said she walked 200 miles to be in D.C. for the rally, which she said took her nine days.

“I decided I was through talking the talk and I was ready to walk the walk,” said Stone, who identified herself as an uninsured cancer survivor, grandmother of two, lesbian and environmentalist who’s building a house out of recycled materials. “I figured I’m the poster child for progressive issues.”

Stone said she was there to let “the wealthiest 1 percent” know that the government should represent the people, not just the corporations.

“I’m really happy to know that the whole world knows about it and we are now part of a global movement of occupying public squares,” Stone said. “We are upset about inequity, economic inequality where [only] so many people are doing so well, corporations, CEOs are making money while the rest of us are making less money.”

Before the group set off for the Chamber of Commerce, a number of activists took to the stage to pump up the crowd, singing songs and delivering spoken word performances. One such act called themselves “The Raging Grannies”:

Performance artist and activist Ron Kipling Williams delivered a spoken word performance of his poem, “America Kills.”

“America drinks oil and excretes fascism!” Williams said. “America washes itself with bullets and dries itself with genocide.”

After several hours, the group set off for the Chamber of Commerce in a march on “corporate America.” They chanted “We want jobs!” and unfurled a large sign in front of the entrance that said “Chamber of Corporate Horrors.” When they finished, some had left a symbolic stack of job applications and resumes in their wake, the Washington Post reported.

Heather Lewis-Lechner said she came across the country from Tacoma, Wash. to attend the rally, and said afterward she hopes it’s the start of a push for people to inform themselves about “how things work”  with regard to economic inequality.

Lewis-Lechner, who works as an attorney in the Washington State Senate, said it’s time for a progressive tax structure where the wealthy and corporations pay “their fair share just like everybody else.”

“It’s not socialism, it‘s not liberalism and it shouldn’t be a dirty word,” she said. “It should just be generosity and compassion for our fellow human beings.”

Hey I‘m working on my masters degree and I haven’t a penny of debt.
      1. My wife and I own a house we can afford
      2. We never overspend ourselves (we value life experiences, not plasma TVs)
      3. I served my country and thus have the GI Bill
      4. I’ve never… NEVER asked for a handout and am working my ass off for the future of my family
These Occupiers make me sick. How can they spend their days holding signs complaining that they are not getting enough from our mighty government when I work my ass off everyday, so I can pay more taxes for these idiots to steal.
I’m about at wits end with all this BS!

It will die off. The left will degenerate into it’s usual behaviour, property damage, riots, multiple arrests, disruptions. It’s already starting to happen and it accelerated when the unions joined in. The left’s mask will fall off..it’s just a matter of time. Americans can see these are bunch of kooks and smelly, faux hippies. No matter how much the media, Obama and the democrats try to legitimize it the American voter wants a stable economy..and the left and Obama will not provide that.

Whats sad is they have some good intentions with their demands they they go off into lala land on others. Then you have the biggest problem of all if it wasnt for capitalism NONE of us would be here in the first place! I know I did a paper on it back in college!! If it wasnt for capitalism they wouldnt be clothed, have cars, food, paint and paper to make their stupid signs!! Their very existence is completely contradictory to capitalism!!! Their attack the rich is unfounded not understanding the tax system. Dont get mad at rich person Doe for taking advantage of the tax code. You can too get a good tax preparer who knows what they are doing. That though is besides the taxing issue they dont understand the difference between income and capital gains taxes. They only know what Buffet says. Curious when is he going to pay the taxes he owes?

They are clearly regurgitating talking points of their handlers from DC to the unions who are all behind this. Oh and lets not forget the countless socialists, anarchists and communists involved. This is Lenins dream of useful idiots. I could go on about these hypocrites and their Hollywood RICH fans who are part of the machine they are protesting about.
Do what you can and prepare its just a question of time til it all comes apart. Like Clemenza said in The Godfather “These things gotta happen every five years or so, ten years. Helps to get rid of the bad blood.” http://tinyurl.com/yhglscs

      ****
When my family members enlisted the GI Bill was advocated as part of the soldier’s pay, to help them be able to return to civilian life after their service. It is earned by basically being “on call” if not on duty 24/7 for the term of enlistment and then during the ready-reserve after that term is up. This IS PART OF THEIR PAY PACKAGE WHICH THEY MAY OR MAY NOT CHOOSE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF. But, they also must pay back the loans just like paying any other kind of mortgage, not certain of the college benefit because my favorite soldier got his master’s while in the reserves. Didn’t have to take out loans for it.

As a retired military aviator I agree that what you say is true. I, however, did not say whether the program was good or bad. I simply stated that it was another government benefit program funded by taxpayer dollars. We were paid well during our service when you include meal and family benefits, health care and retirement plans. Why should we expect more?

@ Sovereign Soul, I think I am qualified to respond to your accusation. The truth is that the GI Bill is a federally funded system that is ultimately paid for by the taxpayer. HOWEVER, there is a big difference between sending veterans to college at a cost of ~20,000 a year for a max of 36 months and providing for every senior who qualifies for soc. sec. with the taxpayer dollars while at the same time taking in even more in taxes through the soc. sec. tax which is ~15% of a person’s income. The GI Bill was never set up to look like the veterans were paying into a system to have the money invested so that that money would provide for them in the future while what actually happened was that the money was spent and converted into bonds which the taxpayer has to pay back with interest and then some to continue the system into perpetuity.

This is the big diff between the GI Bill and all other gov’t welfare. It was never sold to us as a lie. Also, I believe that the majority of US citizens are for paying for this privelege that is granted to the men and women who have taken an oath to defend the Constitution and the nation.

And on a personal note, if I were asked to give up my benefit in order to actually help repay our debt, I would do it. Hell, as long as they stop all federal welfare programs and mandates I would empty my account to pay off my portion of the debt today so that my children wouldn’t have to.

      @Sovereign Soul,

You say you were a military aviator. That means that you had to be an officer of some type. I‘m sure you understand that the enlisted don’t already have a college degree, nor did they have a parent that was going to foot the bill. Also, enlisted pay is a far cry from officer pay and the available free time for a newly enlisted Marine is next to none from my experience. Hell, they wouldn’t even allow me to take my car to my first duty station where I was trapped for 9 months (Pensacola, MATSG-21). So even though the military will pay for college tuition on duty, the amount of time available to do college course work while also trying to do training coursework and 5am pt sessions is negligible. Compound that with the fact that the college tuition available is a very small amount ~$4,500/year. When you also add in that in order for an enlisted man to get this tuition paid for they have to have it signed off my their commander and some don’t want enlisted men taking on the extra burden because they feel it will hurt their work performance and you have alot of problems with trying to get a degree from any credible institution in the normal 4 year enlistment. Oh, I forgot to add that most commanders won‘t let enlisted even start to go to college on a tuition waiver until they have completed all of their MCI’s for the rank they are in and the rank above, none of which help with getting a degree or have any relevance to their job usually.

Why are you people so angry? I simply made the observation that the GI Bill is a taxpayer funded government program, which you’ve ALL agreed that it is.

@cemerius – I may be old enough for some to consider quaint and obscure. I can live with that. To you I simply say Ooh rah and I hope you find some way to assuage your anger.

@SGTB – I am not sure what kind of accusation you think I’m making. We served for all citizens, not just the one’s we agree with. For the second time, I will repeat that I think the GI Bill is a good program. I used it myself after retirment. That doesn’t change what it is. Also, I completely understand your frustration with Pensacola! Were you ever able to participate in the Interstate Mullet Toss? It kind of proves that sometimes we will participate in any stupid event to get off base!

These people need to quit complaining and get a job! Oh that’s right, they refuse to work for less than $20.00 per hour. I run a small business that employs 20+ people and I take home LESS than minimum wage. It’s net producers and job providers like me that they villinize with their idiotic socialist rheoric. All they they want to do is collapse the system because “poor little baby” can’t live like a king IN THE MIDDLE OF A DEPRESSION. I guess it’s true “misery lovers company”. These people need to get a grip and be thankfull they don’t live in a truely Marxist state, they would be the first to be sent to the gullogs.

No, they don’t villianize you. If anything, they stand with you–even though you can’t see past your hatred. You employe 20 people but can’t provide better than min. wage for your family? Why might that be? Herman Cain says it’s your fault. Your thoughts?

Okay I don’t know about the rest of you all but I have had enough of these people. I use to call them “Useful Idiots” however, they are just plain stupid and well you can’t fix the stupidity that these people are displaying. The America they are calling for is not the America that our Founding Fathers made. These people want handouts and the government to take care of them. I’m all for putting them on a boat and shipping them to Greece and see how they like it over there!

Seriously though I have had enough of these stupid people!

I used to try to engage them with facts, found it too difficult in the long run because they rarely have any to back their claim or affirm mine.

I‘ve even tried noting the Republicans have damn near cleaned house since the Bush days and we now have the Tea Party candidates to make sure we don’t go back to the Bush days, yet Obama claims change we can believe in, breaks campaign pleages to not hire lobbiest, and fills most of his cabinet with ex-Clinton people.

All I get is ” you didn’t have a problem when Bush was in office”
I remind them again to look at the 2006-2008 house cleaning and say we didn’t mind.

And again and again, they just keep pointing at bad behavior from a party that was rejected and transformed to justify bad behavior from the Dems.

I‘ve come to the conclusion you can’t change a libs mind. If they succeed, it’s because of them. If they fail, it’s someone elses fault. And it‘s not that they don’t like what the Repubs are doing, it‘s that it’s the Repubs doing it and not the Dems. Bad behavior is fine as long as it’s not a Repub doing it.

They say its not socialism in the same breath as demanding the “Rich” pay their fair share — a share not one of them will claim an amount in percent of wealth other than the government seizing it from them for all others…police state mentality made reality from the mouths of insanity.

All of this is for Obamas agenda of transformation of the nation; and reminds me of a Senator back under Clinton advocating a 100% tax on everything, including the seizing of all assets of all people.

He stated “the first year we will make…“ and shockingly ”the second year revenues will increase 15% or more”

He advocated seizing everything, and once ALL WAS GONE TO THE GOVERNMENT it would be more and more productive…socialism indeed.

The violence should begin any day now. The left just can’t resist an opportunity for a violent mob. Hopefully then, the rest of the country will wake up and reject these lunatics, and all who support them.

Indeed, the time when THEY, the allies of the administration, will be ordered to draw steel and paint the streets with blood is almost at hand. We are on the edge of the dissolution of the nation, and the Revolution of the Socialists may commense at any time.
