Fishermen Net 2,000 Pound Great White Shark — See the Photos of the Beast

When two fishermen off the coast of Mexico pulled up a nearly 2,000 pound, 20 foot long shark they were at first amazed. That quickly turned to, “what are we going to do?”

Grind TV reports the pair were fishing in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez on Sunday when they netted the giant, dead great white shark. Before they saw the beast, they had thought they were bringing up a great load of smaller fish. Not so. Grind TV has more on their thoughts and what they had to do next:

“We were amazed and immediately realized that we had a huge, dead, great white shark, and then we thought what are we going to do?,” Guadalupe, one of the fishermen, said in an interview with Pisces Sportfishing, which is located in the Baja California resort city of Cabo San Lucas. The other fisherman was named Baltazar.

The fishermen, whose skiff measures 22 feet and is powered by a 75-horsepower outboard, required an hour to tow the carcass two miles to the coast. About 50 people helped drag the behemoth onto dry sand. Milenio News reported the length of the fish to be six meters, or 19.8 feet.

From there Grind TV reports Pisces stating it is unclear what happened to the shark. Scientists were seeking out the giant in the hopes of obtaining samples.

On average, adult great white sharks weigh between 1,500 to more than 2,000 pounds and can reach between 11 to 13 feet long. Grind TV reports that the Gulf area is thought to be a nursery for the sharks. Shark expert Christopher Lowe of Southern California confirmed great whites are common in this area, although it is unusual one should be so large.

The Belmont Shore Patch reports there is some controversy over the reported length of this shark. If it is in fact 19.8 feet, it would be one of the longest of the species ever caught, according to the Mileno News. It also states that some would think the shark would weigh more at that length.

Get out the geiger counter..I wonder if the shark was enjoying a little too much Japanese sushi after the nuke spill.

If the shark isn’t swimming, it’s not breathing. How long was it in that net? At that size and possible old age, maybe it had died a natural death.

The question is if they netted a dead shark, why is there postmortem bright colored blood on the face?

This is a little fishy, the story not the fish

That shark maybe a great white shark but it is not a whale shark, which is very friendly, huge but inoffensive beast and has not teeth. Only eating plankton.

Because the Beast is about to rise out of the pit, in the middle of the ocean. You know…. the Book of Revelation! LOL…… I can just imagine a huge tail or tentacle crashing back and forth after it bursts out of the crust, and the shark got nicked in the face, crushing its skull; and the shark dies instantly. Right after it hemorrhages here come two guys in a zodiak trailing a net, sealing the shark’s fate that day; the fisherman unaware of the monstrosity that could have swallowed them whole……. Hey, its just a theory…. LOL.

Y’all know me. Know how I earn a livin’. I’ll catch this bird for you, but it ain’t gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin’ bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin’, little tenderizin’, an’ down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that’ll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin’ basis. But it’s not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I’ll find him for three, but I’ll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you’ve gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don’t want no volunteers, I don’t want no mates, there’s just too many captains on this island. $10,000 for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

Definitely big enough, but if you look at the people standing near it, there is no way that it is 20 feet long. I’d give it 15. Still more than I’d like to run into.

You can’t measure it by this picture. You don’t know the angles. The boat is 22 feet long and the shart dwarfs it…because of the angle.

It was dead in the net. Sharks actually have to keep moving or they drown. Once it was caught it couldn’t go forward and died, so while its true they couldn’t save it when they noticed it, the net probably killed it.
