‘Fit for a Queen?’: Media Praises Michelle Obama’s $6,800 Shirt (After Bashing Ann Romney’s $990 One)

TheBlaze does not usually report on fashion trends or presidential outfits, but in this case, a shirt forms part of a larger narrative.
Over the weekend, Michelle Obama “wowed” at Buckingham Palace “in a captivating, all-white embroidered jacket that retails for $6,800,” in the words of the New York Daily News.

Explaining that the first lady opted for a J. Mendel “capsleeve jacket” from the 2013 resort collection, the Daily News continued:
And [Michelle Obama] put dozens of stuffy royals and heads of state to fashion shame, making the queen look dowdy in her bulging aquamarine dress and tired-looking crown — and even showing up Kate Middleton in her belted, fitted satin coat-dress.
Make no mistake, FLOTUS followers quickly pointed out, the radiant, silk-and-viscose tailored jacket — with the capped sleeves highlighting her famously toned arms and a matching ivory-silk pleated skirt — were made in the U.S.A.
And a surefire way to generate patriotic pride is to best a fashionable head-turner like Middleton on her own turf when she’s clad in the blue pastels of wunderkind designer Christopher Kane.
“She isn’t just wearing a $6,800 jacket — she’s supporting the commerce of the nation,” said top celebrity fashion stylist Robert Verdi, who plies his trade on Eva Longoria, Hugh Jackman and numerous other A-listers.
“It’s not wasteful, it’s inspiring: It’s a New York company — selling a product made in the U.S. at places like Saks — and it helps the tailor and the little dry cleaner on the corner stay in business.” [Emphasis added]
The Washington Post, perhaps playing on the company, asked whether Michelle Obama’s “princely” outfit was “fit for a queen?”

But the first lady has also drawn some criticism for her extravagant top– partially because the same media savaged Ann Romney for her $990 shirt back in May.
A Washington Post article, for instance, called Ann Romney’s shirt “indicative of a tone-deaf campaign,“ and claimed it could ”haunt the campaign indefinitely.” The article continued:
The very wealthy Mitt and Ann Romney have often been painted as out of touch with average Americans. Ann’s pricey shirt will not help her husband change those perceptions, no matter how many Laundromat photo ops are on the campaign’s daily itinerary.

Some Americans might be thinking that the $1,000 spent on one shirt could help them out with a house payment or buy necessities at Walmart. Others are counting exactly how many T-shirts that amount would buy at Target, where first lady Michelle Obama said she often shops… [Emphasis added]

Apparently wearing expensive clothes is a big “no-no” if you’re wealthy enough to afford it, but glamorous if taxpayers are offsetting your other costs.
The Gateway Pundit turned around the media’s praise of Michelle Obama and criticism of Ann Romney, writing: “She does this as Americans continue to suffer through a deep recession and record unemployment…”
But they assured: “Michelle Obama feels your pain.”

This is how it’s going to be until November. It’s made worse by the fact that Obama is half black and Moochelle is black. Liberals love to coddle minorities and the “oppressed”. They don’t view a person by their character, they view a person by secondary criteria like race, sexual orientiation, political leaning..etc. So a $6800 dress on a black Moochelle is something to be adored and gushed over, while a $900 shirt on a white Ann Romney is a sign of being out of touch with most Americans.
I particularly like the “keeps the little dry cleaner on the corner in business” (I love those quaint platitudes liberal elitists like to throw around to keep the unwashed in a eurphoric haze). I have a $100 that says Moochelle doesn’t go to any dry cleaner in DC.

First of all, the Obamas are wealthy on their own as well. Secondly, when Michelle purchases a dress that dress is not bought with taxpayer dollars. Not only is she wealthy from private endeavors (her books, her year teaching, media coverage, etc) her hubby – Barack – makes an annual salary of $400,000 being President. You could “argue” that’s TaxPayer dollars, but then you’d have to also argue that your senators, congressmen, police, firemen, postal workers, aren’t entitled to spend their paychecks as they see fit.
So please. A little less drama and a little more brains.

Edison did improve on the invention many years later and it actually wasn’t even Edison who improved it but a bunch of guy working for Edison. Agreed, the Obamas were wealthy long before he entered office. I fail to understand how someone can make so much money writing memoirs, without been famous before writing them (I certainly would ahve no interest in reading a memoir by someone I’d never heard of), but Obama did it, and he and his wife can spend their money however they please, although I would be surprised if the designer didn’t give the shirt away for publicity. Also, why attack the first lady for how the media portrays Ann Romney? If you think the media is being unfair, attack them. But instead, you choose to call the first lady “Moochelle”?
Besides, neither of the shirts is anything special. The first lady’s is rather uninteresting, and Ann Romney’s is somewhat tacky.

What you aren‘t getting is the writer of this article wasn’t attacking the idiot-in-chief’s wife for wearing the shirt, though I do feel that the other commenters are absolutely right in calling Michelle out for her rather extravagant lifestyle on the tax-payer dime especially when so many people are having to cut back due to hard times.The writer WAS attacking the media for their blatant hypocrisy and complete lack of consciousness. Michelle was merely the 2nd part of the catalyst for the comparison. The fact is this president and his wife have continually made a mockery of not only the office of the president but of the people of this country and the Constitution of the United States. I understand the blatant hypocrisy is sickening, but it goes back to pushing people to covet others blessings. I’m happy Michelle found a beautiful top to wear, she looks fabulous. I’m glad our first lady looked better than the rest of the women. What I am not glad about is the double standard and the constant harping on rich vs. poor. We all do what we can with what we have.
