Five American Military Personnel Could Face Disciplinary Review Over Koran Burnings

At least five American military personnel could face a disciplinary review over the inadvertent burning of Korans on a U.S. base in Afghanistan, a Western official told the Associated Press.

A joint investigation by Afghan and American military leaders concluded that though mistakes were made, there was no intent to burn the copies of the Muslim holy book at Bagram Air Field, an act that is considered a grave sin. Still, it could result in a disciplinary review for at least five of the American military members involved. The official — who spoke on the condition of anonymity — would not elaborate on the reason why the review was recommended.

The incident started when Korans and other holy Muslim texts passed among inmates at a nearby detention facility were found to contain extremist writings. According to reports, the books were confiscated and placed in boxes intended to be thrown away. Later, soldiers on a garbage detail, having no knowledge of what the boxes contained, carried them off to a burn pit. Afghan workers recognized some of the material and went to salvage it. None of the texts were completely destroyed.

Despite apologies by President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials, the Feb. 20 incident touched off six days of rioting and violence in the region and resulted in the deaths of six U.S. troops and more than 30 Afghans. The Americans were all fatally shot by Afghan security forces or militants disguised in uniform, including two who were killed inside the Afghan Foreign Ministry.

Even as American officials insist no insult was intended and that the U.S. military justice system should be sufficent in holding those responsible accountable, Afghan officials are demanding the offenders be publicly identified and punished, according to the New York Times.

“There are some crimes that cannot be forgiven, but that need to be punished,” Maulavi Khaliq Dad, a member of the Afghan religious leaders’ Ulema Council, told the Times. “This is not any book; this is the book of the whole Muslim nation, and if a few people are punished, America will not be destroyed. But if that doesn’t happen, it will create animosity and enmity between America and the Muslim world.”

Your post that questions the soldiers motives does not match the text of the article that clearly states the Afghan/US investigation concluded the soldiers had no knowledge of the contents of the containers they burned.       I hope I am wrong but I am going to make a predition here. The “Dont Ask Dont Tell” politically correct, risk averse, zero defects, Obama military aparatus will charge these soldiers with Dereliction of Duty and either issue them General Officer Memorandums for Record (GOMOR) or go all the way and punish them under the UCMJ reducing them in rank and removing them from military service. They would have been better off being caught jumping into their gay lovers arms and french kissing him. Anything to do with perversion or sex is okay, anything that embarasses the administration or upsets the Muslim world is dealt with swiftly and decisively. There is the smell of war brewing in the air and it will soon break out in this country. Technically war has already been ongoing. The battle between ideologies has been blazing for control of the heart and soul of this country. But the American sleeping giant is slowly beginning to awake and what has been a battle of words, I believe will soon become discontent leading to protests leading to riots leading to a domestic uprising at some point unless things change. Obama, “the great unifier” has done more to destroy and segregate this country than any other president in history. He may be sincere in his vision, but his vision is sincerely evil. His fundamental beliefs are driving this country right over the cliff and nefarious forces have long dreamed of bringing down the USA in a fashion that will enable great wealth and control to be consolidated over many. He will go down as the worst national leader of the free world and history will speak of the man that killed liberty. He is not very intelligent and has served beautifully as a useful idiot in the white house to serve those who are actually in control over him. What a lap dog he’s been.

      Hundreds Of Bibles Were Burned In Afghanistan By US Military Yet No One Was Court Marshaled For That.

      When I was in the USAF, they never issued me a free Bible, why not. I had to pay for my own Bible but the Federal Government buys Korans for the Gitmo prisoners and Moslems in the Middle East.

      I do agree–My experience with the US Army 69-77 suggests these five are sacrificial goats-put on the chopping block -for the greater good of our mission in Trashcanistan. They will be punished. And if they are not already back here in the States. Given the Domestic Enemy that thinks he owns the Oval Office…. They may be dead. At any rate their Military service is effectually over. And then the Military must contain the loss such treatment may cause in re-enlistment. Though I hear already it is harder for enlisted men and women to re-enlist.       Rose-Ellen the first part of your missive contains some logic i.e. the correlation with Viet-Nam and you are partially right about who we OUGHT to be fighting. In Viet-Nam we should not have propped up a series of dictators. Pop quiz who put Diem in power, then sanctioned his assassination? We should have also pursued a policy to allow people to own their own land, though I don’t think the Viet Cong really followed through on that policy. Mostly however, we allowed the North Vietnamese to use refuges in Laos and Cambodia (Pakistan?) and refused to destroy their military infrastructure. The politicians screwed the pooch there and are doing the same thing in Afghanistan. We should be KILLING the Taliban until they stop and agree to some reasonable exit (guaranteeing women’s rights and allowing a free election). We are wrong to give Karzai a bodyguard. If he had to safeguard himself, he just might ramp up his own security. Then as always, clockwork, you go off the deep end and sponsor the radical muslim talking points of the day.

      Please don‘t call Obama’s mother a bitch. She suffered and died from ovarian cancer at 52, when he was a student and young man. I know it‘s very easy to just throw it out because it’s one of the PG-13 curse words but it means something vicious and targets the wrong person. I lost my mother to breast cancer when I was 6 and I don’t think I was ever the same for it 22 years later. So on this issue I identify with the president.

      On 100% of everything else, he needs to get out of office, but never attack his mother’s honor. It’s just dirty.

      Word of caution! You will have the best results for you Q if you marinate the starter in denatureed alcohol for 15-20 minutes. Having experience with the traditonal petroleumn based products I find the causity “finish” from unleaded regular tobe just to strong to be palitable. Some of the other synthetics work as well xylene works well but causes flare ups.
      But anyway, to date for best restults.. 1 1/2 cups denatured alcohol , 1/2 lb. of bacon and a=1 cup lard. Mix alcohol and lard, butterfly the Quran du jur and cover with bacon, in glass pan. Set in sun for 15-20 minutes, remove and place in combustion area, ad chaarcoal, top wioth pork chop, Bon Apitet!!

    Shame on our government if they discipline any of our soldiers. What about our military that was killed because of this incident. I have not heard the great Obama be outraged by their deaths. It is clear what side he is on!

      Exactly .. he does not stand with America or our troops .. where are the R in the House? .. why not start Impeachmen?t … I don‘t care if we can’t get it through (but it is an election year and some Dems might feel threatened enough to vote for impeachment) I want his CRIMES on record.

      Obama (as most all on the left) hate, absolutely hate our Military… they always have. They hate what our Military stands for and represents. They will of course use our Military as a prop without hesitation and tell us that they love them… but we all know that’s a show when all is said and done. They are as transparent as Obama’s teleprompter.

      NHWINTER; I agree this is BS as usual . Stand up for our military. Make the phone calls. This is wrong and should Never happen to our brave men and women who serve our country, who VOLUTEER to serve our country.
