FL Students Protest After White Student Chosen to Lead Black Campus Group

Some students at the University of North Florida are upset this week after a white student was chosen to lead a black campus student group. The students are so angry they decided to protest the appointment of freshman Torey McCleskey as assistant director of the African American Student Union:
The appointment was made by the student body’s senate. Opposition protesters say they‘re upset not because of McClesky’s race, but because of his experience. According to them, this is an attempt at multiculturalism that should be tried elsewhere:
News4Jax.com explains:
“The decision-making, the selection process of his appointment was unlawful,” said Christa Merix, an executive cabinet member of AASU. “That is the main purpose why we are here.”
On Monday night, the UNF Senate approved the appointment of Torey McCleskey. AASU members said McCleskey should not have gotten the job because he has little experience.”He has never been in our office,” one AASU member said of McCleskey. “We didn’t even know who he was. He has attended one event and he left early.”
AASU is a 200-member organization founded 20 years ago, in part, by Frank Goodin. Its focus is African-American enrichment.”
The student government is appointing people who have no experience and no connection to AASU, and it appears that they’re trying to change into a more multicultural focus,” Goodin said. “We’re fine with that. The African American Student Union is fine with that, but create a different agency for that.”
The appointment was supported by the student body president, who is black.

Then let them try to exclude an African American and see what happens! I say to all black students in that school and elsewhere, in case they haven’t noticed, this isn’t Africa, you are NOT IN Africa (most have never been), this is America! If the day ever comes when black people living in this country begin identifying themselves as Americans who just so happen to have black skin, and not as “Africans,” WHICH THEY ARE NOT, perhaps then some of the racial wounds can begin to heal…….

It said twice that this was voted on by the student senate. Unless they can provide some legal proof that there was anything unlawful about the appointment, it sounds legit.

Being from Jax I have watched this school grow and blossom into a fine institution. I think what the student board did is pushing the envelope and has nothing to do with being devisive, anymore than girls forcing frats to let them in or boys forcing sororities to let them in. I am very sorry to see this negative publicity as there are so many positive things that go on there.

If some of you believe a societal organization of America based on sub-groups and minorities is detrimental and contrary to the spirit of our Republic (that would be me), then lobby for a redefinition of American culture based on national identity, not sub-group status. Good luck on that. In the meantime, it is stupid to place a white guy as assistant-director of what is obviously a black political organization.

The same way with these minority groups. You can have the Black power group, the African American Empowerment group, the Asian advancement group, the Hispanic power advancement group etc. but let someone start a Caucasian advancement group then they are racist. Let a White group deny colors they are Nazi’s and racist but let a Color group deny Whites and that is ok! Reverse racism is the trend today! This is why European Americans need to stand up today again this bias and bigotry against Whites in this country! Start up your Caucasian or European American advancement groups just like they do! Don’t be ashamed of who you are.

Your post was a great read, but I wanted to point out one little thing that irks me about the racist label. The term “reverse racism” makes absolutely no sense. A racist is someone who is biased against someone else because of their race. So anyone can be a racist. Reverse racism, if you go by the laws of the English language, would be if you loved someone based on their race, like if a white dude loved black people because they’re black. So in reality, reverse racism is simply a term conjured up to make it look like white people are the only ones who can be racists while everyone else is a “reverse racist”, as if that’s any different.
