Fla. School Districts Refuse to Distribute Constitution Booklets Donated by 9/12 Project

Fla. Hernando Citrus School Districts Refuse to Distribute Constitution Booklets Donated by Nature Coast 9/12 Project Glenn BeckTwo Florida school districts won’t be handing out pocket-sized Constitutions to their eighth graders because they were donated by the local 9/12 Project, prompting concerns from school officials about the “opinions and viewpoints” the booklets contain.

According to the St. Petersburg Times, the Nature Coast 9/12 Project gave thousands of copies of the Constitution to the Hernando and Citrus school districts in central Florida in August. But because of certain handouts and forewords that accompanied some of the booklets, along with the organization’s name and website, officials decided not to pass them out.

“It doesn’t matter what group it is,” Hernando superintendent Bryan Blavatt said. “The question is, are we giving out resources that are primary sources … or is it subject to opinions and viewpoints and selective choice of materials?”

The St. Petersburg Times reported:

Some booklets donated to Hernando were published by the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, whose website describes its mission as serving communities through “fellowship, compassion, and dedication to God, family and country.”

These booklets contained other primary texts such as the Declaration of Independence, Abraham Lincoln‘s Gettysburg Address and Patrick Henry’s Call to Arms. A foreword to the booklet reads: “Unless Americans remember and preserve our rich heritage of liberty, a new Dark Age of tyranny could lock the majority of mankind into the harsh chains of totalitarian slavery.”

Some booklets donated to Hernando were accompanied by a one-page sheet from the Cato Institute, a conservative think tank, with the heading “Constitutional Authority.” The sheet asserts that the Constitution has been misinterpreted, leading to “a government that’s effectively unlimited … and increasingly unaffordable.”

Booklets donated to the Citrus district refers the reader to books published by the National Center for Constitutional Studies, a conservative, religious-themed organization formed by Mormon political writer Cleon Skousen, who argued that the founding of the United States was a divine miracle. One of Skousen’s books referenced in the booklet, The 5,000 Year Leap, is often cited by political commentator and 912 Project founder Glenn Beck, who wrote a foreword for a later edition.

Citrus officials plan to return the booklets because the school board said the additional material conflicts with the district’s policy of not passing out political material; in Hernando, principals were told to give them out to any student who wanted one, but not to pass them out to every student.

“When you add all of those things together, it’s not just a simple Constitution,” said Mike Mullen, assistant superintendent for Citrus schools. “You‘ve got to be real careful when you’re passing out information to the kids.”

Nature Coast 9/12 Project organizer Maureen Arrigale said her group reached out to school officials last year about donating booklets and submitted samples for review, which were approved.

“The booklets they have are the same booklets we sent them,” she told the Times. “We’re not promoting any kind of agenda or politics whatsoever. Our name just happens to be on the book.”

Mullen acknowledged staff members reviewed the booklets, but said they didn’t research the National Center for Constitutional Studies or the 9/12 Project itself at the time. He also said the sample booklets received did not contain the 9/12 Project name and website.

“I know they claim they’re not a political group, but they have direct links from their website that do take you to partisan political websites,” Mullen said.

But the Nature Coast 9/12 Project donated money to a local Tea Party group to purchase Constitution booklets for schools in another Florida district this year without any problem, Arrigale said. Those booklets were stamped with the Tea Party’s name, which a district spokeswoman told the Times was fine — “[a]s long as it’s not included with any sort of political message.”

For the 9/12 Project, the controversy is just the latest setback in an attempt to get schools to teach U.S. history taught in a complete, unbiased way.

“What we’re out to do is educate people that things in the Bill of Rights are being taken away from us and are being misconstrued,” Nature Coast 9/12 member Annette Weeks said.

Yeah right Mike. I would bet you have no problem handing out condoms to the “kids”. I bet you have no problem telling the “kids” that being a homosexual is a really good bet for happinest in the future. I bet you have no problem letting planed parenthood explain to the “kids” that having an aborition is not that much different than having your tonsils taken out. I bet you have no problem telling the “kids” that liberals are kind and caring and conservatives are mean and hate everyone.

Mike, you are a really good example of what’s wrong with this country and the unionized schools of America.

I just wanted to ask the question, if this was a copy of the Constitution had additions that directed student to partisan groups of the opposite political spectrum would the argument here be the same? If it directed kids to more, what is now commonly referred to as “liberal” (A whole paper can be written on the different meanings of that term, but that’s not pertinent right now), sites how would everyone here react?

Now, I used to be a fairly conservative person, however I’ve come to realize that both sides of the political spectrum are equally corrupt, blinded, and neither truly represents the will of the masses. Each side argues that their side is just, and the only true way; that other who don’t believe in their ideals are evil and out to destroy this country. The more I read this blog and many others (I read news sites and blogs covering both sides of the spectrum such as Fox, ABC, CNN, NBC, Al Jazeera, etc) the more I realize that both sides use the same methods, and are just as messed up, just they believe in different ideals.

I don’t mean to offend anyone on reading this, but most readers here, from what I’ve seen are indeed biased and do not necessarily represent the only or best thoughts and ideals for this country, for anyone who uses hateful, demeaning, and condescending arguments or try and say others who believe in the opposite of them don’t belong in this country, don’t truly believe, deep down in the freedom of speech.

I’m the chaplain for the Nature Coast 9.12 group here in Florida who were turned down by the Hernando County and Citrus County School systems from giving a copy of the US Constitution to the children. You can give a child a condom, but not a constitution.

Not to many months back the same Hernando County School System allowed an Islamic group to come into the Springstead IB World School, and in the process one of the speakers said that Jesus never claimed to be God, and that he came out of the womb saying ” I am a slave, not God.” and this was allowed. When myself and other christians asked questions at that meeting we were called names.

This same Hernando County School system sent a letter to staff saying that if a person has a death or sickness that the phrase ” Im praying for you, or any reference to scripture shouldnt be used.

There is clearly an anti-christian, anti American history theme here. I for one have grown very tired of the political correctness in this nation.

I agree the public school system has No problem passing out stuff handed them by the Gays and Lesbians– nor do they have any problem promoting Islam– or Communism –but to promote the reading of the Declaration of Independence , the US Constitution Bill of Rights, and perhaps the Gettysburg Address unaltered by the Kennites. Why how dare anybody try teaching what the Founders actually said might make the kids think America is a good place to live after all.

hmmm, donated by glenn and the tea-party! lets see what Doug Kendall, the president of the Constitutional Accountability Center has to say about them: “I defy the Tea Party Patriots to find one credible historian willing to support their view of the Constitution’s history. Before the Tea Party gets to go into school and teach our children about the Constitution, they need to find a tenured professor on the history faculty on one of any of the 50 highest-rated universities in the United States who will vouch for the accuracy of their teachings. To qualify to teach America’s children about the Constitution you need to do more than dress up like James Madison.

The Tea Party Patriots are peddling constitutional gobbledygook masquerading as history. Yet whether it is Tea Party organizations misrepresenting American history, or Tea Party politicians like Rep. Michele Bachmann not knowing what state the battles of Lexington and Concord were fought in, the Tea Party has utterly disqualified itself from serious discussion of our Constitution’s text and history. America‘s school boards must flatly reject the Tea Party Patriots’ attempts to muscle their bad history into our children’s classrooms” thats all folks!.

Great tip bear I’m all about getting on these people that make these decisions for a our kids. That decision should fall on the parent not the school.
So they didnt want these handed out b/c a 9/12 group was stamped on it? The 9/12 group had nothing to do with the content… our law of the land. Who wants to bet if 9/12 was left off it and no reference of the donor was anywhere on it but still had the same forward who wants to bet they would have handed them out. 9/12 = TEA party which is = Glenn Beck. Thats why they were against it pure and simple. Odds of kids reading the forward and seeing its was from 9/12 or CATO and being influenced and close to nothing. I have a better question what are those who made this decision political beliefs? Who wants to bet the superintendents at Citrus and Hernando lean left?! These are the same types who decide what and how our kids are taught. They select the books with history and facts redefined!
Wanna stop this madness get involved, get on these school boards find out where these decision makers stand on political and social views and if they are progressive get them out of the schools. Dont be the parent who gets angry saying someone should do X, Y” BE THAT someone you wants to see X Y done at the board level for schools. You cant sit around anymore complaining folks you have to be active and engaged… otherwise kiss it all goodbye!http://SavingtheRepublic.com

I agree since we all know that if they were given books proclaiming obama as the student’s messiah and that are to believe every word that obama says. The schools couldn’t manage to pass them out fast enough. They way they are way anything that they get that promotes evil, sin and pro-liberal propaganda and things like that, they would force every student to take it and they would probably punish any student that didn’t want it. But if it is promoting the actual Godly nature of our nation or anything that promotes individual rights and the evils of having too big of a government then they will find every reason they can to ban it. Our schools are predominantly run by anti-Americans and anti-God people.

You guys do know that before the government got into the education business, most people didn’t get one, don’t you? And that education is specified as a duty of the state government in every single state constitution in the country? And that almost 90% of American schoolchildren attend public schools, far too many to ever be absorbed by private institutions? If you do know all that, and you really think it would be a good idea to pass a constitutional amendment closing all the public schools in your state, by all means write to your state senator and urge him or her to introduce one. I just hope you won’t be too disappointed when you find out that they are reluctant to do so.

You better believe a lot of us are against public (socialized) education. You are correct! Many of us want the government out of the education business! That’s why home schooling is on the rise.

As for your statement about education before government and big corporation funded schools, nearly every free person knew how to read, how to do basic math. These were things you learned at home. Without government schools, America had a 80 – 90% middle class. Without government schools, most families owned a business. Without government schools, there was general law and order and typically strong family and community cohesiveness.

I’m not saying socialized education is the root of all evil, but in my opinion, it very close to it and needs to be scrapped.

“Parents please get your kids out of the government schools!”

      Agreed.

And while one would think that the appropriate thing to do is to hold the teachers accountable to their oath to the Constitution, what people are unaware of is that there is no Constitutional authority for the federal government to run education programs.

So to complain about them about the content of the material being taught is actually quite pointless, and is a relinquishing of your right to have the government butt out of your child’s education.

This is why Ron Paul wants to end the Department of Education.

Give me a break. Have these people actually read Henry’s Call to Arms?
“My President, it is natural for a man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts.”

“Let us not, I beseech you, sir, deceive ourselves longer. Sir, we have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on.”

“There is no longer any room for hope. If we wish to be free if we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending if we mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon until the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained we must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight!! An appeal to arms and to the God of Hosts is all that is left us!”

Patrick Henry’s words resonate still today. You can’t silence the patriots.

My thoughts exactly. They have no problem handing out condoms, teaching about homosexuality and teaching sex ed, but Heaven forbid, we talk about the Declaration and Constitution and the Founders. Wow, such awful morals they had. (sarc on)

I think these children would have been better served by handing them copies of George Orwell’s 1984!!

Most ridiculous item I read today! I actually got a copy of The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution of the US, and The Constitution of NJ (yes New Jersey) when I graduated Middle School, now this was some time ago. Every school should be required to give students a copy at some point in their elementary school career.

An organization gave the school where I taught copies of the Constitution to distribute several years in a row. Then another organization actually provided Constitution workboks and teacher lesson plans – and they weren’t at all biased. I actually taught a Constituion unit to my 5th graders. We started with the Declaration. I read them Limbaugh’s speech on the signers. We progressed to the Constitution and even took a test on it. Most of my kids probably knew more about it than some of the Democrats in Congress. I had support from the administration and parents – and this was a public school. It IS possible.

They should have handed out Constitutions, period. That’s it. No foreward, no commentary, nothing. Just the Constitution. I would not want a Left group handing out a Constitution with their advertisements and words anywhere in it. Goes both ways. Constitution only.

Bullseye !! You’re dead on correct!
The Constitution doesn’t need commentary, or someone to use it for advertising (it’s just flat-out dis-respectful).

    Mike Mullen:
I suggest you buy a dingy, go out in the Gulf, and row yourself a couple of hundred miles due south.
You would be much more suited to “teach” in Havana than in our country.
And remember, you have to be real careful if you decide to take a dip along the way. Sharks love chum(ps)…

Wouldn’t it be easier for him to take a car down to Key West and set off from there? Then he would only have to row 90 miles.

Now now, multiculturalism is the answer, provided it’s mixed in with oracles of Marx. I mean, look at the amazing things happening under socialism…um Socialism (pardon my lack of PC). There’s the failure of the European and Russian banking systems. The misery index in those Country’s will make America….um (sorry professor dillweed at Sorry State University), AmeriKa.

My kids, and their kids after them will know the Founding Fathers. They will know the good and the bad in the building of this Nation which has been the greatest Nation in World History. They will be taught to say yes sir, and yes ma’am, to say please and thank you. If they start to get out of control, the rod will not be spared. Dr. Quack can keep his mind bending psychotropic brain killers. A busted rear end is better than a brain fried on social engineering garbage drugs designed to render the population malleable globs of mindless drones that pollutes Universities and public education. My children will know how to do complex physics and field dress game equally well. They will know every word of the National Anthem, GOD Bless America, and America the Beautiful. They will know the pledge of Allegiance like a second skin, and they will know the Constitution of the United States as a working language they abide by. More than anything else, they will be raised in the fear and admonition of the Lord through Jesus Christ.

Public educators are useless. We’ll do it ourselves.

As long as they’re “classical liberals” like the Founding Fathers I’m good with that. That would make them exactly like me, a Constitutional Moderate. They act like the fools on the left, they won’t like the result.
