Fla. Teacher Jerry Buell Suspended for Posting Anti Gay Marriage Views on Facebook

Florida high school teacher Jerry Buell was suspended from his job this week over postings on his Facebook page.

A Florida history teacher has been suspended after it was revealed he wrote about his objections to gay marriage on his personal Facebook page.

Jerry Buell, who was Mount Dora High School’s “Teacher of the Year” last year, reportedly wrote that he almost “threw up” in response to New York’s legalization of same-sex marriage in July.

According to Fox News, the school system received a complaint about the comment Tuesday and suspended and reassigned Buell the next day.

“It was my own personal comment on my own personal time on my own personal computer in my own personal house, exercising what I believed as a social studies teacher to be my First Amendment rights,” Buell told Fox.

Buell provided the following transcript of his comments, posted July 25:

“I’m watching the news, eating dinner when the story about New York okaying same-sex unions came on and I almost threw up,” he wrote. “And now they showed two guys kissing after their announcement. If they want to call it a union, go ahead. But don’t insult a man and woman’s marriage by throwing it in the same cesspool of whatever. God will not be mocked. When did this sin become acceptable?”

Three minutes later, Buell posted another comment: “By the way, if one doesn’t like the most recently posted opinion based on biblical principles and God’s laws, then go ahead and unfriend me. I’ll miss you like I miss my kidney stone from 1994. And I will never accept it because God will never accept it. Romans chapter one.”

Chris Patton, a communications officer for the school system, told Fox there was concern about how Buell might treat gay students in his class. He also disputed the notion that the comments were private.

“He has [more than] 700 friends,” Patton said. “How private is that – really? Social media can be troubling if you don’t respect it and know that just because you think you are in a private realm – it’s not private.”

He vowed Buell will not return to the classroom until “a thorough job of looking at everything – past or previous writings” is complete.

Buell said he thought the school is trying to silence Christian teachers, warning them not to express their views.

“There is an intimidation factor if you are a Christian or if you make a statement against it [gay marriage] you are a bigot, a homophobe, you’re a creep, you’re intolerant,” he said. “We should have the right to express our opinions and talk about things.”

We are not going to political correct any more . We will speak our minds. If their feelings get hurt ,so what. We will let someone else come and pat them on the back and tell them they are not being understood. who gives a flip ? what is wrong is we have been quiet to long and we will sit down and we will not shut up and we will not give up

I keep hearing about the government interfering with people’s personal lives and suppressing their beliefs and opinions using schools as an excuse, e.g. firing and suspending teachers for not going with the Liberal agenda 100%, the cheerleaders who posted nude pics of themselves, teachers spying on the students, and so on.
      This is very disturbing.

I have had teachers in my classroom who have had hateful and ill-informed opinions about my religious beliefs, and about my politically conservative values. I suppose they could have been biased, but since religion and conservatism only formed an incidental part of the subject matter, we were always able to move forward in the confidence that personal opinions and classroom professionalism would stay separate when it came to evaluating my work. Students who self-identify as lgbt should have no problem with this teacher because even WITH these opinions, in the past, he has given good grades to those who deserved it, no matter their gender orientation.

What a sick nation we have become. Homosexuality is becoming the new civl rights play ground. We have about 30 days left, and they will officially release the sodomites on the military. I can only imagine. The most vocal group will be the lesbians. they will want gay and lesbian night at the officers club, and all manner of sick twisted rights. I also bet the lesbos will be the ones looking for old fashioned conservatives who hold to Bible standards on homosexuality, and be looking to roast one. Will be plenty of problems with male queers, but I will bet that most of them will stay in the closet a little while longer than the lesbians.

This country is going down the drain quickly. What ever happend to our 1st amendment rights?

And the truth is Florida State constitution Section 27 adopted in 2008 ,Insofar as marriage is the legal union of one man and one woman,as husband and wife,no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized.” From what I have read reported Jerry Buell plainly expressed the distinction between his personal viewpoint and any other. I am no attorney–nor gay activist–but I find no violation of either the Code of Ethic for Florida educators nor State law—and challenge ANY to show me otherwise.

Does anyone have the address or email where we can contact the school? I for one do not believe he is a bigot as someone posted above. Most people do not condone this lifestyle and I for one will not be forced to say I approve when I do not. If you want to be gay then be gay..but I do not need to know your sexual preference. Why should you get special rights because you prefer the same sex? Why does anyone need to know? I believe you just want everyone to tolerate it, believe in it completely, have more people doing it so that you can pretend to feel that it is ok. Otherwise why have it taught in school? I am sure that I will be jumped on for saying this but I do not care. I have the freedom of speech or at least I did until progressives came along.

There should be more concern about gay teachers. Doesn’t the school worry about how they will react to the MAJORITY of straight students? This whole Diversity and Sensitivity BS, is about empowerment of a minority over a majority. Just like Equal Rights was BS, they want more rights, Control is what they want. To impose acceptance by the majority who disagree. What happened to free speech? The lefties love throwing out words like ‘hate’ speech, and ‘hostile environment’ to get there way. I don’t think gay people are collectively a power hungry mob that wants nothing more than to enslave you to the forces of wickedness. “He has [more than] 700 friends,” Patton said. “How private is that – really? Social media can be troubling if you don’t respect it and know that just because you think you are in a private realm – it’s not private.”

Well…yeah, but does that mean he should whitewash who he is, even if that person is an idiot? I mean really, if kids are allowed to use the internet, there’s a lot worse stuff they could stumble onto than this guys moronic beliefs. If we can’t expect them to handle this, then we definitely shouldn’t be letting them use the internet.

See and I knew you were going to make this argument:
“there was concern about how Buell might treat gay students in his class.”
And it’s a valid concern, but my question is, do you have any EVIDENCE of mistreatment? It’d be one thing if he were expressing these opinions in class, in a public setting on the public dime, but he’s not, at least not that we know of. And unless, or until, we know of said discrimination on the job, I don‘t think we can realistically have a standard that says he can’t do this. That’s not really fair. And we have to be equitably fair in our treatment of everyone…even morons.

Look, I think it‘s a good constitutional principle to respect this guy’s right to be wrong. I think that’s a brilliant and necessary part of civil society. However, I don‘t think that means I’m required, or should, be any less blunt than necessary in my opinion on those stupid opinions, which I nonetheless I think are important people be allowed to have. The whole point of the 1st Amendment is so that the good and true ideas can be distilled from the marketplace of ideas through rigorous ideological and philosophical debate. If that doesn’t happen, and if ALL ideas aren’t present, then that system breaks down. So while I think that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation (or race), or abhorrent political ideologies (like fascism, Nazism, or communism) are all important to allow people to espouse without persecution, I don‘t think I’m obligated to like or agree with those beliefs, and I think it is my duty to say so in no uncertain terms.

“Queers destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah! U,S,A, next”
Something you have no evidence ever happened…nor any logical reason to suggest why it would happen…how exactly are gays, roughly 9% of the American population, supposed to be responsible for the destruction of itself and the other 91% of the population? What possible actions could they collectively take to destroy the other 91% in the conceivable future? Why would a just God (by human understanding of justice) do such a thing, when he could just destroy the 9% he is arbitrarily inexplicably pissed at, even though He apparently likely made them that way, so it’s His fault…why does God get all butt hurt over some sodomy? Two women making love is a beautiful thing–how could a heterosexual Jesus not appreciate that? If God ISN’T just by human understandings justice, then why give us those understandings in the first place? Is it His idea of a cruel joke for us to experience the world in one way, but have the underlying reality be completely different but unknowable? For that matter what definition of “God” are we operating under–we have to establish what we are looking for before we can even talk about finding it. You see, there really are a lot of unanswered questions, unanswerable questions down the whole “God” tree–so it’s kind of the tree in the forest that falls; does it make a sound? Who cares.

Sorry, BONE, but you’re wrong. Teachers’ unions only care about one thing, DUES=POWER. I don’t care if this poor guy admitted to being a GBTV subscriber. Teachers ARE NOT to be fired or suspended (unless it’s with pay and benefits) EVER.

Ya think so? I’m guessing total silence from the teachers union or vocal support of the school board “to get rid of this homophobic hate mongering Christian” for the children, the hypocritical leftist bastards can always come up with a poor excuse….

“When did this sin become acceptable?”
When my generation hit maturity–I know, it sucks doesn’t it old people, but don‘t worry you won’t have to put up with a world that accepts gays for who they are much longer.

I accept gays for who they are–they are the deceived. they LIE to everybody -case in point Vaughn Walker–the antiChristian Prop 8 Judge ,who gave the Judicial Code and the good people of California the finger as he rode off into retirement at the baths,Case in point those who enlist in the Military-or apply for any job anywhere –but never mention they are working for their “cause” .They “choose a dangerous and destructive lifestyle and then cry because the majority of normal people just want them to shut up and keep their life to themselves. dont damn them -they are damned by what they choose to do.

“Chris Patton, a communications officer for the school system, told Fox there was concern about how Buell might treat gay students in his class.”

But it is okay to openly anti-Christian (though I admit /most/ of my teachers like that have been in college, a few were in high school), because who cares how they treat the Christian students? I had an anti-capitalist government teacher in high school too, would they have suspended her?

Seriously though, what an idiotic claim. It might have some merit if he said something like “Saw 2 gay students kissing today. Think I’m going to look over their next essays a little harsher. Only by the Grace of God will they be saved from ‘F’s and burning in Hell.” Then I could see checking out if he is mistreating the homosexuals in his class. Suspending him over him stated disapproval of gay marriage? That’s a joke, and a bad one at that.

How would he know which students were gay? Oh! that’s right, being gay is something to share with society, whether society wants to know about your personal life or not. Is the word discreet even in the dictionary anymore?

“A Florida history teacher has been suspended after it was revealed he wrote about his objections to gay marriage on his personal Facebook page.”
FLORIDA?! You mean “where old people go to die” Florida did something PRO-GAY?! Isn’t that the first sign of the Apocalypse? Someone get a Bible, quick.

But seriously though, firing someone for being a stupid idiot bigot in their personal life is silly–assuming he doesn’t bring his views to a public school (I’m okay with him taking it to a private religious school where he will be paid for such bigotry) and infect children there with them it’s fine. It‘s not like there aren’t hundreds of cops across the nation who enjoy dressing up in Nazi regalia and attending American Nazi Party meetings on the weekend and we don’t fire them (I kid you not, we have one of those in Portland)…although maybe we should look closer into that one. My point is, though, that very few of us do things in our private life that are 100% acceptable to EVERYONE–no one even agrees 100% about what acceptable is. So we can’t be firing people for things like that–not when there are some many OTHER good reasons we need to be firing them. Like incompetence, or teaching that Creationism is a scientifically supported theory.

Never been to Florida, have you? North Florida is pretty conservative (with a few exceptions), but South Florida is a very liberal place. Gay Days? Key West Pride? Yeah, believe it or not there is more to Florida than geriatrics and Spring Breakers.

o why would someone have to be a Bigot to find 2 men kissing on tv repulsive? I find it repulsive. I can respect people without having to like what they do or how they act. You see it‘s simple minded people who can’t see past their own self righteous noses that believe their opinion must be fact that are screwing the whole situation up. I am not gay, I have friends that are gay, I like the person but I don’t have to like what they do. I am not a bigot. But I find it repulsive when I see men kissing. Simple. And this teacher spoke his OPINION on facebook. from his OWN HOME on HIS OWN TIME. Sad… The thought police are out in force now.
